[ Folding ] We only need 13,000ppd more to start catching ABXzone

can you use WINE and run the gpu client?
appoliges if thats a noobie mistake

Afraid not - WINE is good for a lot of things (they've made massive leaps here) but the f@h gpu client isn't one of them because of the way that wine handles traffic to the gpu.

Also - no apologies needed :)

Its not a silly question by any means, i looked into doing it a while back, but .walls speaks the truth, although "WINE Is Not an Emulator" it emulates the windows environment, but ultimatly the graphics card adressing is still done by the Linux host.

I'm sure it would be technically possible, but would require a huge amount of complex code to be written/redesigned. You'd have to run the client in windows, to create the CUDA instructions within this virtual environment, then pass them through WINE back to linux, where it would then likely need to be processed such that linux could deliver the instructions to the gpu, with the reverse also occuring to make the client work. Essentially i think you would need a linux based sub-client to do the addtional processing required.

Not only would this be a massive programming effort, it would likely be a relatively slow execution and a resource hog, ultimatley more effort than its worth. I imagine it would be easier to create a linux gpu client, and that hasn't occured yet.

We're already outproducing ABXZone (slightly). Good work guys :D

It's just taking a while for the averages to reflect the production.

Cheers - 5x X7350s... :D

Got a 720BE that I could fold on as well... can't do anything with my 8800 gts 512 - don't have windows installed. They really should write a linux gpu client as well :(

Nice! The BE is feeling left out ;)..

Funny you should say that... it's up and folding now ;)

Problem is though... f@h likes to have an even number of cores to chew on... so I have four processes and three cores - anyone know how to restrict to just three?

Not possible i'm afraid - if your running the SMP client it always spews out four threads, regardless of the number of cores.

I'd stopped folding because I needed the RAM and the heat was annoying me, but I'll do a few SMP and GPU WUs before I go back to Uni.

At stock though, because I'm writing my dissertation and can't be doing with random crashes. Still, four cores is four cores...

Looking forward, might treat myself to an i7 860 around Christmas time. That's bound to need some eight-threaded thrashing. :p

I'm thinking of getting a PS3 and was wondering:

Does Folding@Home count towards BOINC Credit? - as it is showing as a retired project on the BOINC stats site.

Also, is there any other projects you can run on a PS3 that can gain BOINC Credit?

Apologies if wrong forum (or thread).

We're falling way behind ABXZone now, we were so close at one point :(

I can't up my production any more.

Running 4 clients on all 4 cores of my Q6600, can I get small WU's to work on to get some points submitted? One's I've been given have 1.5 million steps.

I feel guilty :(, when I'm back from the gauntlet though, I'll have 16K PPD. With the others back as well I reckon we will take them :)

My production should be back on the rise to ~18-20k ppd, moved back to uni (and free leccy:D) this week and sorted the 2d clcok issue with older drivers, so i should be stable for a few weeks output.

Is this kind of slow? SMP client on 4 cores...

Looks fine tbh. Are you using FahMon to monitor your folding? If so let me know what work unit you are folding and I will compare it to my Q9300 this evening.

Is a 8800gt still a good folding option?

Got one going spare now my 5850 has arrived. Could put the 8800gt in my server in the garage i guess and see what happens? Not been folding for ages!
