Football in Manchester

But why would you support your local club when you can support your fantasy club? Unless we start making supporting your local football club a form of community service then it just won't happen. You keep uttering crap like football snobs but you have yet to come up with a reason we should support them other than "well you should!"

Cos people don't support their fantasy club thats why. How many people on this forum watch the teams that they support home and away? I can count the number of games that I've missed in the past five years on two hands, you tell me I utter crap but at least I put my money where my mouth is and get involved.

R.I.P. Hyde United

Mr lynne here suffers from a perverse form of snobbery, he is saying we are not as loving of the beautiful game as he because we dont stand in the rain watching some pointless lower team club play head tennis for 90 minutes every week.
I've done my time in grass roots football, and that was when I was playing it, for nothing, because I love the game.
Now I watch players I could only ever dream of being as good as, every few days, for £35 a month.

Pointless? Grass Roots? What do you think this is, sunday league played in a park? If you played for nothing then you didn't play at any kind of level worth watching.

I can guarantee to you that when I saw Hyde play a few weeks ago they played some superb football, not "head tennis".

It seems to me that this is a country of football lovers who are football snobs. How many people are devoted to the big four clubs in the Premiership yet wouldn't dream of putting money over the turnstiles at the team down the road because they're "crap", even though they've never seen them play!

Yep I'm a complete football snob. Lower league football is awful, I've never seen a game nor been to one in my entire life.

I've been bought up to support Sheffield Wednesday, I love them. I'm a season ticket holder.

I have a lot of family that support Manchester United, I also go and watch them when I can.

I have a lot of family who support Doncaster Rovers, and as a lot of my family are from near Doncaster, I go and watch them from time to time. I also have family from Newcastle, and I always keep an eye on them, even if I just argue with family about them been a big club :p

I have a lot of friends ( I live in Leicester ) who support Leicester, so I go and watch them quite often.

I used to be a life long member at Denarby United, My Grandad was chairman at the club, he left and shortly after they folded (2002) I used to go watch them with him as well.

I've played football at Sunday league level, school boy level, and played for a friends work.

Must really **** up your idea that we all football snobs who know nothing about "real" football.

Face it, given the option (WHICH MOST PEOPLE NOW HAVE) they don't want to pay to watch **** football, they can drive to better clubs, watch it down the pub, or at home in better conditions watching better football.

If lower league clubs, kept the ****ing books in order, they wouldn't get in to this mess, run your club into the ground and what do you expect? Why should another club, have to use their profit ( that they get from running their club well ) on digging out a club that's ran badly? makes no sense.

Football clubs have died and been born for years. Same ****, different day.

As already said "oh the irony"

Cant get much more grass roots than driving to some good forsaken ****hole market town ground and playing for nothing but you and your mates pride.

Oh, and the 4 league titles, 2 county cups and 1 league cup that I won as well.
;)

I've probably missed 4 or 5 Arsenal games in the last few years, all of which I've caught up on either on the internet or TV, so none really.

Jeff you're beginning to sound like a broken record who generalises the football fan population with narrow minded views. Of course it's a shame that smaller clubs are having to close down, would it be nice if the bigger clubs helped out? Yes of course it would. Would it be be good if money was distributed better throughout the leagues? Yes. But a football club is a business. If a business isn't doing well it's closes down. Some of these clubs would close regardless of fans turning up every weekend as some are just purely badly run. No amount of pouring money into them will fix the problem. Owners and managers are usually held accountable.

Most of the regulars here in Sports Arena do support their local team in some form. Expecting everyone to follow their local team and watch them every weekend when sport in general especially football is about being passionate for a team. If I don't have any passion for a local team I won't be watching them, I won't be buying tickets every weekend to watch a team I don't care about. And I certainly wouldn't be spending money that I could put to better use. And should the day ever arise where I feel passionate about a local team depending on where I'm living I certainly won't be taking any moral high ground as you do every time you bring this debate up.

I support Sheffield United, I follow Arsenal, and I watch Hallam FC when I can. Ever heard of them? Do I beat you in the obscure team snobbery award?

I've heard of them :p

Are you the only fan ? :D
Seriously, picking up a copy of the Green 'un and reading about football teams you've not herd of is brilliant, it's written so well :)

I always watch a group of kids playing football in the park.

Is the standard great? No. Do I get weird looks? Yes. Does it make me a better football fan than everyone on here? You bet it does!

I go to watch and support a Conference North team (Harrogate) and can see both sides. The problem is theres been a switch in society. Fans these days would rather watch Man U in a pub on Sky Sports than poorer quality football at the likes of Hyde. Its sad, but thats just life. Whats killing football is the fact that all the cash coming into the game at every level is going straight into the players pockets. Premier league clubs can cope, as we live in a world where advertising is king these days, and brings in far more cash than the turnstiles, but slip just a couple of leagues and sponsorship becomes almost negligible.

Harrogate are struggling to the point that they sold pretty much their entire first team and have gone from habitual play off contendors to 20th in the league with whats essentially a Unibond squad, as the wage demands of even average Conference North players are just not substainable. But at least the bills are paid so there will still be a club to support. It seems a lot of other clubs stuck their heads in the sand and hoped HMRC would go away - sadly they never do.

I've never said that anyone here should go week in or week out but if all these football fans were to go and support their local club three or four times a season then the game would be so much better off for it.

I may sound like a broken record, but hey, in all the time I've been playing it I doubt any of you have actually taken the slightest interest in their local team.

I've heard of Hallam. Although mainly because we used to have a player with the same name, not because of the team.

What league are they in? We've got a decent young midfielder who's just started back at Uni in Sheffield who's going to be available for our games in that neck of the woods but could do with some match practice at a decent standard.

And good on you for giving a bit back.
