For a gaming build i5 8600k vs i7 8700k?

Still on sandy 2500k at 4.5ghz but feel the need for a change in my bones.

Plan is to go to 3440x1440 when funds permit.
GPU will be a 1080Ti for this task.

I have read and watched a lot of Coffeelake i5 vs i7 comparisons. In some games like crisis 3 (which I completed and am done with) there is a big margin in favour of the i7. Bit better perf in witcher 3 (won't play it) and in other games no difference really.

I can afford either but like bang for buck and what is appropriate to task.

If it matters I like headline mad overclocking frequencies too:DThe i5 is getting slightly higher clocks on average than the i7 with less power useage and better thermals.

I do not need any compute power for editing etc just for GAMING

Cooling is with a 360 rad and heatkiller 3.0 block. I am open to de-lidding.

So do I save £100 with the 8600k that pays for a waterblock on the 1080Ti or what you guys think overall?

From what I have read a clocked 8600k will let a 1080Ti do its thing without bottlenecking.

A degree of future proofing be nice though realise in this game there's no such thing ofc.

For that resolution and GPU, go for 8700k. i7's usually last a year or two longer than i5's, and in some games there are already big differences between the two. I agree, future-proofing isn't possible to predict, but we can look at how past i5/i7 have aged to draw conclusions.

For the waterblock on 1080ti money-saving - a 1080ti with a good air cooler can hold boost clocks similar to a watercooled 1080ti. I really don't see much need for that, as performance improvements are so minimal anyway for just a 100mhz overclock.

Always get the best you can afford, but I'd rather get i5 and a better GPU if I had a budget to adhere to.

Depends what 'best' is though. I stand by my decision to go i5 in 2011 but enough time has gone by where things are different.

You may be right, it may be worth it the i7 this time round.

as people say you tend to get 1-2 more years extra for a i7 over a i5.i personally always go for i7 or above now as you actually get better performance and value over long term.

Under the hot sun.
Also depends if we anticipate another 5-6 years of only incremental changes with CPUs or not.

in my opinion the 8700K & Z370 is a very short lived platform. Z390 is due Q2 2018 and 8core mainstream CPUs around summer time.
(was posted elsewhere 8core is tapped this quarter so expect mass production in 2 quarters)

For gaming only, and especially at 3440x1440, get the 8600K and overclock it. Also at that resolution even 4Ghz overclocked Ryzen 5 CPUs at less than half price (CPU+Mobo) are capable to deal with every current game.
Except if your games are some old ones like CK2 or old MMORPGs. (like SWTOR, DAOC etc).

I am not saying 8700K is bad, but as value for money goes at 3440x1440 resolution, overclocked 8600K or Ryzen 5/7 are better value for money and the best GPU you can get. If you are on budget.

Sources for those release dates?

It depends on advances made and if I cannot categorically run modern titles at close to max settings. GPU's typically last me two years. CPU's harder to say with Sandybridge skewing everything somewhat hehe.

Three years minimum be nice out of the CPU/mobo/ram side of things. I dont adopt onto every new platform. I'm a sensible enthusiast if that is such a creature...

Would there be much benefit in the i7 over the i5 for VR gaming? I'm looking at getting this I5 too, but plan to drop a Ti in and get another VR headset later.

Probably, although it's a topical subject. I'd have concerns when it comes to running the various graphics and VR API's with Pascal.

I'd be tempted to look at AM4.

I'd rather have an extra 6 threads i'd buy the i7 for £100 more.

i notice you have 970's in SLI and a ROG Swift.

Are you upgrading the lot or just platform?

I stick with Intel rightly or wrongly it's what I know and am comfortable with.

Yes as per opening post plan is to go 3440*1440 with a 1080TI

Then I go with a binned 7700K or 8700K.

Edit: Actually looking at the prices and stock levels I'd go with a 7820X and £200 X299 board.

Most games doesn't make a difference right now between even the cheap 8400 and the 8700k but as time goes by the 8700k should age much better and probably be a little smoother overall.

Maybe although with Vulkan and DX12 core count will probably yield the biggest advantage and performance per core will become less relevant. That said Nvidia don't seem able or willing to make use of the extra CPU performance on offer.
