For Sale: Newcastle

The only good Ashley did for the club was pay off the 100million debt and get their youth system back on track. It's strange how a club like Portsmouth can get bought by billionaires and a club like Newcastle who have a massive fan base, big recognition throughout the world and a big stadium can be overlooked and struggle to find investors. Now their in the championship it'll be much harder to find investors.

I think I'd put that mostly down to it's distance from London. London has air travel links to almost anywhere in the World...and it's a fair bit more glamorous than Newcastle (I readily accept that Newcastle is a more bustling and vibrant, cultural city than Sunderland before anyone jumps on this)

The Pompey debt would pale in comparison to the wealth of this new investor who is supposedly linked with the investors who bought Man City. I do think that Portsmouth are a good buy, with the location, supporters and also the new stadium in the works. But I still think Newcastle would be the better buy. All they need is new investment and a new chairman and some stability for once.

This is a perfect time to buy Newcastle. Knock down price and bags of potential.

Pompey were bought this week even though they have massive debt (well done Harry), a small stadium and small fanbase.

Is it though?

If Administrators come in, what happens to players contracts - can they be cancelled?

There is so much dead wood - or players who just dont want to or are unable to play together, that any new owner will have to write huge checks to get decent players in as well as more checks to see all those players just sitting around collecting their pay (as they are so ***** anyway - no one will want to buy them)

The club as a whole is a good proposition, but why pay for players you dont want and will never want playing for "your" side - as an investor.

Youngsters will get great experience but it would be surprising if they can even tread water and stay in the Championship in 10/11 - just from experience point of view it will be a sharp learning curve

Buy the club from admin - admittedly this will cost the club a handful of points next season, so could see them relegated before they have even started - and it should be a much cheaper proposition.

£50k a week is like £2.5m a year or something if my maths is correct, reportedly 15 players on that amount in the current squad - how many are actually worth that and worth keeping until the end of their contract .....IF they are willing to stay in the Chamipionship to start with....is that nearly £40m in wages alone before you even start, in the Chamionship!!!

Thats a HUGE risk for potential investors imo - even with parachute payments

The only people I really feel sorry for at Newcastle are the 100's of admin / marketing staff that have lost /losing their jobs because of demotion - Im really surprised that these departments are sooooooo huge even for an EPL team recognised around the world

So many differences between Pompey and Newcastle - It would be interesting to find out how many behind the scenes staff Pompey has - but I bet its a fraction of the Northern club

In fact I take it back, administration isn't logical if Newcastles Utds main creditor is Ashley, as he'll be the main looser. Looks like they'll need to find a buyer but with the debt, quality of player and manager plus the wage bill I can't see anyone being interested as it's going to take a huge outlay to sort.

I'm sorry if you interpreted it that way but I did say that's what he needed to do to solve his problem.

As for coming back within 1 or 2 seasons I don't see it being so unreasonale as a prediction, especially if money was spent.

I meant to say as well, I doubt we will come straight back up now, too much uncertainty at the moment, we might not even have a manager by 1st July, FFS.

funny how dennis ratboy wise hasnt been mentioned, if he had resigned or ashley let him walk, kk would have finished the job properly, maybe finish 10th but build on next season.

ashley chose the structure over keegan, and good coincidence wise leaving when shearer came in, wise must have been scared, shearer wouldnt put up with any of his crap.

so far duff and beye have come out and said they want to stay and help us get back up, credit to them, the majority of the rest are gutless and spineless and dont give a dam about nufc.

im more worried we go into administration and become the next leeds united, only seems like 2 year ago we were in the champions league, now we are not even close. sad thing is i dont think our toon fans expectations will lower, most will think we will walk the championship and be in europe the next - i wont be holding my breath :o

to add, i read earlier on teletext ashley will let the club go for as less as 80mil now, the fat ba****d has ruined our club

Oh aye, totally.

Or: "I like my big fat Newcastle paycheck, and am not interested in dropping my wage down to work at another club. This lack of a relegation clause is pretty handy, like."

So do you want him to get you a new owner or not?

Are you really sure this has anything to do with genuinely wanting to help the club out? Take Duff, for example: he's 30 years old and is contracted until 2011 on basic pay of £70,000 a week*. No other club is going to offer him comparable wages to that. Perhaps I'm cynical, but I would be very surprised if his declaration that he does not intend to leave is motivated by anything other than a desire to keep earning as much as possible as his career begins to wind down.

As you say, crippling debt and subsequent administration is a real danger for Newcastle now, and I would've thought if he really "gave a damn" about the club, given their current financial predicament, he'd remain open to being moved on in order to save Newcastle the ~£7.3m they would otherwise have to pay him over the next two years.

Yes, or that, to be much briefer about it.

I got sent this last week
Unbelievable. Only the mags could get away with this. Some eagle eyed geordie has noticed that their points total is wrong by a point which means they should acutally go above Hull. For some obscure reason the draw they played against West Brom in November didnt go on their points tally. Check it out on the net. Its right, the mags have appealed to the FA and if the claim is upheld it will send Hull down instead......

Carlsberg don't do texts for delusional geordies. But if they did.... this would probably have been the best text in the world.

Awesome piece on 5 live on my drive home tonight on Newcastle. Never heard so much delusion in all my years of following football. If it has a listen again it's well worth a listen.

The interviewers did a great job of playing devil advocate.
