For the gym rats

Feel a little bit of a cold coming on, tonight is my final 10 rep workout though so i'm going to push through it.

Had 2000mg Vit C with breakfast and i'll without a doubt have at least another 2000mg before bed and 1000mg post-workout. I'll hit some anti-oxidants and all should be well. I never usually get to the stage where I feel that bad so hopefully this is the same.

I'm not drinking at all this weekend either so i'm sure i'll be ok to keep training.

You know i'm not a believer in taking supplements Wardie, i truly believe that taking loads of pills and powders is actually negative to health.

There's been quite a few findings that too much vit C is harmfull too and has been linked with cancer amongst other things.

This one i didn't know about: http://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/news/ng.asp?id=52747-high-dose-vitamin

Seriously mate, don't get carried away with the supplement hype ;)

Personally, i'd rather give my money to third world country starving kids who need REAL nutrition!

I just feels like a runny nose a little bunged up, will have to see how I feel tomorrow. I know i'm trying to cut down on the supplements, the reason I take so many is because I used to struggle getting vegetables in my diet, and i've still got work to do with that (I hate veg).

Here's an example of a training day anyways...

7am
30g Whey
90g Oats
Ginseng & Vitamin E
Mega Green Tea Extract (500mg)
1g ALCAR
5g Creatine

9:30am
Wholemeal sandwich

12:00pm
Wholemeal sandwich
Vegetable soup (Not always)

3:45pm
Wholemeal sandwich
Half or Full Pint semi-skimmed milk

6:00pm
30-40g WMS

6:20pm
30g Whey
1g Vitamin C
Mega Green Tea Extract (500mg)

7:30pm
Stir fry (Lots of veg, egg noodles, chicken breast)

9:30pm
60g MPs Bedtime Extreme Formula (Slow release protein 40g, HMB, Glutamine)
1g Vitamin C
3g Omega 3
1g Glucosamine

Got carbs? hehe :D

Runny nose it may be, but it is very easy to run yourself into the ground.

I know, I know, i'm working on the fats!

Going to order some coconut oil and stock up on olive oil and cut down my carb intake. I'm going to start by having whey and extra virgin olive oil for breakfast, rather than oats, so no carbs for breakfast. That'll be an easy 60-90g reduction in carbs per day, then i'll go from there, does that sound ok?

I'm feeling a little worn down so i'll try to train today and then see how I feel tomorrow, if I get a cold it never lasts longer than 2-3 days, so if I feel bad on Saturday i'll postpone my workout and recover properly.

Olive oil isn't that great nutrition wise, over rated by some people. Be picky with your coconut oil, try and go for virgin organic stuff. As with anyfats you don't want heavily processed crap.

If on a budget Tesco do a nice 400ml can of organic coconut milk. I put 50-100ml in a protein shake along with some cocoa powder, great as a morning shake and/or pre workout :)

So would you go for conconut oil over EVO in the morning? I guess I could just alternate...

I've seen your post on where to get it from in the UK on the other forum, so i'll probably just try it from there.

I put 2 table spoons of Flaxseed oil into my shakes, tastes really bad but so good for you.

I'm going to leave it today and rest, if I feel better tomorrow i'll train then. I would have liked to do both my heavy workouts back to back as you should but it's hardly going to have a massive effect in the grand scheme of things.

Good work :]

You are not aiming for a comp, you have no real need to put yourself under that sort of pressure. Take a day or 2 then hit the gym feeling 100% instead of 75%, it will give you better gains (both physically and mentally) and less chance of causing injury :]

Train safe, train smart :]

Just to echo what was said you need some good quality fats mate! Makerel is the winner.

On the illness side of things hot fluids seem to really help me, i've never stopped it coming but with a lot of hot green tea the effects last a shorter duration as i usually go to the brink of death on a cold.

As for the coconut oil, RAGE! There isn't any at the shops around my uni house so I told mother dearest to get me some, apart from wondering if it was for my face or to cook with I think she got the idea in the end and got me some from the big Tesco near her. No doubt will be heavily processed crap just after I got rid of the oil of red death (Carotino) :(

Could anyone clear up the confusion on oils for me? Coconut is the best and should be used at all times? Or is there room for EVO?

i havent kept up-to-date but Wardie are you on a cut?

why are you going to lower carbs? doesnt look like that much to me

I was thinking the same, i definitely wouldn't be lowering my carb intake while trying to train hard and build muscle.

I'm not cutting, I don't think i'm even 64KG yet and there's just no way I want to cut doing the last part of HST.

Mainly for health reasons, and fats are essential for hormone prodction. It helps to add a little variety to my diet. I may not bother on training days and just do it on off days.

I feel better today, not quite 100% as my throat keeps tickling (annoying), so i'm going to train today because I feel lazy if I don't. Final 10 rep workout so i'm going to beast it.

I've got a couple of satsumas here to snack on and make me all better :D

The last thing you want to do is train when you have a cold/cold coming on. I've made this mistake a few times and it seems as soon as my energy has been zapped from the gym, the cold bug takes over. I think this is down to the immune system taking a dip after a good workout. A month ago I had to take 3 weeks off to clear up man flu, it sucked but now I'm back and lifting more than before. I think it's good to let the body rest longer than usual, once in a while.

Jeff, i'd always read that GTE was more beneficial as an anti-oxidant than green tea itself. Interesting report, but it's the same as practically everything.... is moderation is best. I'll cut back to 500mg.

I drink black tea without any sugar if i'm having a hot drink. Infact, i'm having one right now with a couple of satsumas!

Jeff, extract is actually stronger and better as an anti-oxidant than typical green tea, plus I don't like the taste of the stuff :D

Stronger doesn't always mean better ;) http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg19125631.500

I've tried green tea in chilled cartons, surprisingly, it doesn't that bad.

Satsumas...vit C as nature intended :)

Hope you get better soon mate, msm722 made a good point above too ;)

I find the opposite, if i work out when im feeling a bit ill it brings me around. I'm never ill for more than about 24hrs though im lucky like that.
