Ford Ecoboost 1.0 Cambelt Changes starting to be due @ £1000+

That's clearly major work and a case of the manufacturer building in an out of warranty cost to the customer into their design.

I don't think it's entirely intentional. They have a lot of emissions requirements to meet, things like wet belts reduce drag and can have a fair impact on CO2 emissions. It's just the way it goes sometimes, someone has to lose out somewhere along the line sadly.

Peugot owners have lost out too - not sure ford have taken same responsibility as peugot recalling up to 7 years

esarlier article had suggested belts stretch less than chains (sic) , so even fords pre-text that cyclinder deactivation now justifies a chain sound suspicious
it said , some Japanese cars had them since 90s .. so maybe there is a whole genre of cars that have had them without any maintenance problems,
or they can change them regularly at low cost.

Direct injection combustion is the issue with timing chains.

no point comparing to old Japanese cars running port injection

Most pro mechanics would struggle with the inside of an engine I think, it's not a job which they do often. Especially complicated modern ones :p

interesting - from what perspective ? more force through belt(additional valves), the precision required, contaminants from DI in oil

video -> really want to know the labour effort for changing belt-in-oil versus a 'regular' engine - do you still need to (seemingly) take engine out , and remove crankshaft pulley,
end casing ... bearings and what not.

That's just someone who tinkers in their spare time, not a professional mechanic.

If you watch the video you will see it's not the ability of the person in question, you need specific tools to get the crankshaft bolt off, a tool to lock the camshaft, you need to undo the engine mount on one side means supporting the engine, and undo some 20 bolt on the timing cover alone, not including ancillary components that will need to be removed beforehand. It's not a simple job by any stretch hence the £1000+ quotes.

not sure there wasn't some confusion between timing and ancilliary belts costs in earlier posts -
bmw n47 engine chain (subject to class action) is 1500 notes, albeit, maybe, a less probable failure - up/above the territory of head gaskets.

Half decent mechanics know how to pop an engine mount, lock camshafts, and how to remove a crankshaft bolt...

Sure time consuming yes but its not rocket science.

Wife got a quote for her fiesta's cambelt which needs doing next year when she had a service and MOT yesterday, came out at just over £500 from a Lookers Ford dealer.

- have it done proactively at that cost - wonder how long they warranty it for - which would also payback on any future resale value.
e: do the likes of wbac make any quote discrimination if you have had such work done.

That's good, wonder if it's about cost price and the dealer is thinking we've sold hundreds of these, if they all start breaking then we're going to lose a lot of repeat business, so let's fix it. Seems a sensible long term strategy if accurate.

There's an active recall on Transits with the wet belt , belts are breaking up and either snapping or blocking the oil pick up, we have had quite a few done at my workshop, if the belt snaps ,ford are replacing engines .

is, the way that white van man drives contributory ? - I mean stresses on the belts due to erratic accelerations, from drivers uninhibited by fuel prices.

so how many man hours is a transit belt , and final cost to ford. ?

That would make me want to let it snap :D
It's like the tradesmen that swear by leathermans - when they are blunt, snap the blade and get a new one sent over
