Forgot how bad job searching was :(

That's a very good shout FF, I was out with some friends last night and was sure to ask around, with intent, rather than just saying (as I have in the past) that I'm thinking of moving. This time it was more along the lines of keep an eye out and let me know about anything ASAP. It's always good to get some internal insight about what it's really like to work somewhere as opposed to reading the marketing guff.

Indeed. But also if you are attending conferences or events with people in the field you're interested in and develop relationships and a good understanding of what each other does often people ask what you plan on going to next (more so if you work in a project based environment). I've done some work with many SMEs who owing to the success of the trials and work we have done together and the relationships we created have suggested half flippantly to join their teams.

But yes ultimately it is building those networks and keeping them alive. I touch base with many linked in contacts just to keep that relationship alive. It also means that you pop up in their mind if something suitable comes up. This is all some proactive work you can do. It doesn't generate or guarantee a job but it helps make you more visible to people. :)

Having a stressful time finding work at the moment, I would very much appreciate some advice.

I have just over 5 years experience working for a mid sized managed service business who sell telecommunication / IT solutions. I worked in the 2nd line support team providing technical support for our Cisco VOIP clients.

At the back end of last year I went self employed to persue a contract locally which did not turn out how I'd hoped so I am looking to get back in to a permament role. I do not have an official Cisco certification although this is were my core skills lie, I am studying for my CCNA in the meantime. Ideally I am looking to jump back in to a similiar role I was previously in however realise with no certifications I may need to settle for less and work my way through the business / finish my cert.

Any recruitment firm recommendations or ideas?

Is returning to the company / position you left out of the question?

What's your linkedin network like? Anyone you can ask to keep an eye out for you? I'm not in the IT sector at all, but wonder if it is the sort of sector where you can tag onto a major project (as a contractor) to allow yourself a foot in the door?

Many go back to previous employer as a temporary measure to buy you some time to get your certs, then be in a more advantageous position. Might be a little tough/unpleasant, but definitely worth pursuing.

Have you considered contracting?

If you're currently out of work then you might be able to secure a contract project within a matter of weeks.

I have been approached for a middle management role at one of the largest food manufacturers in the world. Role is based in the UK.
Have completed the telephone interview and passed with flying colours and now have an assessment day booked.
I currently work for another rather large and renowned drinks/food company and whilst I wasn't really looking to move, this vacancy has got my interest going again.
If successful it will be a big move, as the position is about an hour and a half commute away, so I would have to flat share or something (shift so not too bad).
My wife is supportive if I get an offer, so I am waiting to see how the interview goes.

Right, I'm moving down south so will sadly be saying goodbye to Global.

If anyone is looking for a media sales person around Bristol I am unashamedly the dog's danglies!

Qualifications aren't everything, I have none and never had many issues getting IT jobs, if your experience in the field speaks for itself company's are willing to overlook the qualifications, if anything state on your CV you are currently learning whatever qualification

Well to update on my situation.

Had 3 interviews yesterday, 2 phone and 1 in person. The in person one wasn't good, i very much doubt anything more will come of it. The first interview went great and resulted in a second phone interview scheduled for today which also went well. The second phone interview wasn't great. It was at 4pm and having had 2 interviews earlier in the day i think i was mentally drained. Shame as it was an excellent job at a company i'd love to work for (Amazon). Ultimately though, i'm not too bothered as the one which went well is considerably better for me i think.

Also had a successfull meeting this morning for consulting based work and 2 other similar calls in the last few days so that work is coming in which isn't making me too desperate. Also have 7 people on a training course next week which definately helps.

Got another interview lined up on Monday and then another on the 23rd. With a few more interview likely so things are looking ok. My issue mainly is being quite hybrid between IT/Finance i've struggled for the roles by being outclassed by either pure IT or pure Finance candidates. The role which was most suitable i turned down  Still it wasn't right and i wouldn't have been happy.

Well I've been unemployed for just over two weeks at the moment after leaving my performance data analyst role and my temporary insight analyst role being unexpectedly terminated and I've only managed one interview and multiple no's. Problem is, I'm not really qualified for any particular job, my degree was a B.Sc in Geography which really only prepared me for further education or a research type role, having an understanding of quaternary paleoenvironments, micromorphology, geomorphology etc aren't skills in demand, of course my degree has meant I’ve developed lots of transferrable skills but employers seem to always want experience in the role and basically being able to do the job from day one which I can’t really do.

I liked the idea of becoming a surveyor of some sorts, but every advertisement I’ve seen for one requires at least a years’ experience in the role and to get any industry qualifications requires you to already be working in the role – catch 22.

Similar with environmental/sustainability coordinator type roles, requires you to have already worked in the role for at least a year and to get any industry qualifications worth the paper you need to be working in the role already.

So really, I’m relying on an employer to take me on and believe I’m worth investing in which is why I’m just looking at administrative type roles where I can hopefully show I’m worth the time developing. Haven’t even managed to get an interview for such a job yet though.

I have tried, although admittedly only for a short while last summer as the sustainability manager at my then current job agreed for me to spend a few hours with her a week doing inspections and other things although this didn't last long as she left and was never replaced. The only response I did get was from a local recycling company who offered to allow me to volunteer helping separating materials at a recycling centre but wouldn't of involved anything else and there volunteer hours was extremely strict.

I am going to try again though with any companies in the environment, sustainability or surveying sectors, need to somehow gain some experience.

Gutted, got a rejection from an interview i had this morning. Was between 2 of us and they went with the other.

I'm getting frustrated as i never get any decent feedback, it's always "he was great, good interview, great personality, really hard decision....but gone with the other person"

Doesn't really give me anything to work on, i've tried pushing for more feedback but generally just get that i couldn't have done much different. I wouldn't mind if it was the first time but it must be about the 4th time now that it's happened.

Had an interview yesterday with an Excel test. I understand that they interviewed 7 people in total after 3 dropped out.

45 mins for the test which I haven't used for a few years and was confronted with a ton of information on a poor resolution monitor. I shrank it down but it became blurry so had to navigate around as best I could. Ran out of time so never got answer the last question.
Interview went well and found out I was the third choice as I passed (tied on the Excel test). Only 2 jobs positions available though.

But due to that, I might be offered a position elsewhere in the organisation which would probably suit me better (same pay, hours). Or if one of the other 2 people decides against taking their offer, I would then be offered the position I applied for. Been job hunting for nearly 2 years since we moved down here so this makes a nice change.

Job is mine and they have bent over to accommodate some of my wishes.
For almost 20 years I was employed by 1 company and in the past 5 years I have had 3 jobs.
I feel dirty, lol.

New position, was interviewed by 2 high positioned people and got through.

Conversations have been had as it means me staying away from home for 4 days a week, but the opportunity seems too good to pass up.
I have never felt so welcomed at an interview or felt so relaxed going through the process.

I've just had an offer for a job, only went for the first interview yesterday, got a call asking to go back today to meet with the commercial director. Then only been home for an hour and had a call with the offer.

Salary is a little less than other jobs but i was aware of it being the top end of their budget and the job itself seems great with great future possibilities.
