Forgot how bad job searching was :(

I've been unemployed since finishing Uni last year, only just the other day got a job with Sainsbury's as a Team Leader. Problem is, I've just had a phonecall from the job centre inviting me to an interview on Saturday for an admin position they need filled for 13 weeks. I'd much rather work in an office than a supermarket and the pay is quite a bit better too, which is important because I need to pay rent, bills etc, but obviously it only being temporary means I could be back to square one in three months time.

Don't really know what to do, I think I'll go for the interview though and see what happens.

By all means go for the interview, and see how it goes, what the company is about, then maybe see if the role could go permanent...or if the contract may turn into a rolling one depending on work load etc...You never know :)

On a side note from this morning, I got a call earlier for a temp job for a week or so (depending on how busy they stay) for a metal pressing type company who just need an extra pair of hands...I am wondering what they want me to do, considering on my CV it doesn't state I have any metal work experience as such...So we'll see.

More than willing to learn though :) And it will be some money for a short period at least, and something to add to the CV.

Having a chat later this evening, so I'll see how it goes.

Once again, good luck all.

I registered on monster a couple of days ago and uploaded my CV. I got three calls from different agencies today all with possible positions (which after review I asked them to apply for on my behalf). I guess now I'll have to wait and see how they pan out, although after reading some of this thread I'm starting to get a bit worried about these agencies, are they really that rubbish?

Some are yes...most I've dealed with actually have no clue about the field you want to be in...at all.

However there have been some good ones I've had the pelasure of dealing with...The one that got me this job I'm starting today was brilliant, by far the ebst I've talked to, just so helpful...

Which reminds me...I have a temp job for a couple of weeks hopefully! Then it may carry on if it continues to stay busy! :) So I have some money coming in, even if it is jsut above minimum...no complaints :)

Note to self...DO NOT do a job that involves pressing aluminium :O

I've spent two days there...And I can't take it anymore....it's one product, constantly....I'm actually going to linch myself, with a really long sock.

How the hell am I going to last next week?

I sorted similar looking parcels and letters all night in a warehouse for some time last year, it was boring but I needed the income to get by... could do a lot worse (sweeping up animal droppings comes to mind).

Heh, that'd be more fun... :p

I'm punching the same whole into the same sheets of metal constantly...over and over...its amazing :D

Don't you dare quit before you have something else lined up. :p

No really...You don't understand....

It's more monotonous than sewing...You grab a metal rail thing that palsterers use for edges, line it up, punch holes in it six times, and repeat on the next 3000 or however many are in a pack (edit: CRATE) for 8 hours 0_o

I really can't take it.....this is where I wish I was part polish.

spent half of last summer moving frozen quorn from the right of me to the left of me.

was pretty much a zombie

also done ye old mail sorting a few times at xmas. stand there putting letters in boxes for 8hours :p this actually led to becoming a postman which i sometimes wish i stuck at

first week is always the hardest with such mundane jobs so keep at it. eventually i think you go a little mentally ill and your brain helps you out by making everything simple seem really interesting/funny

time seems to go quicker after a week or so too. just stay positive and remember that you wont be there forever (unless you are :o)

Ugh...Zombie work...pays the bills I guess :(

Hah! Funny thing is though...it may get easier after a week...I'm only contracted for a week! Unless they really need the help at the end of this week...The crates of metal things just keep coming

That and I'm supposed to be going on holiday next Wednesday....so that's the only thing keeping me going this week :p

Having just recently started this job a new vacancy has appeared at a local town hall for the council working as a networking support person. It's only a fraction less pay than what this job is on but the benefit is a 15 minute walk from home instead of an hour driving commute over 19.5miles so not only saving £150 a month on petrol but also cheaper insurance due to less annual mileage and less wear and tear on the car.

I've applied for it so will find out if I have an interview a week or so following the 3rd August...fingers crossed :O

I like this new job here I really do but the cost and personal time benefits of working so close to home outweigh driving almost 40 miles a day covering 2 hours. Even though it's less pay it works out quite a bit more due to the savings involved and so I feel it's the most logical route to take!

As before, good luck to the others seeking too!

Congrats though, hopefully the new application swings your way buddy :)

Out of interest where is your current job? ;)

Ta!

Where as in location or where as in company? I cannot divulge the latter for obvious reasons :p

As for the former, software engineer in the Portsmouth region ;)

yeah wasn't expecting company name :) As some people here work for quite high up businesses or government thing's.

Cool though...I'm quite jealous at how some people are on here to be quite honest!

My CV must look so de-meaningful against some :(

:p

Well ive got my old job back in argos warehouse, i start tomorrow:)

Nice one :)

Good luck man!

Trust me, paper qualifications wise mine is probably the worst :p My plus points however seem to be more personal attributes and experience over anything else!

Aha! No really..I can probably bet you mine are worse :p

Considering my main interest is IT biased, my grade at school concerning IT doesn't show it :p

Ditto. Had 3 interviews in total last week.

Sent off another 35 odd this previous week, hopefully I'll get somewhere with a few of them.

35 odd? What are you applying for?

I literally can't find anything I can apply for...either because they're asking for too much or are just generally out of my reach.

Some of them ask for a degree  but I don't see why most office type jobs would be out of your reach...

Indeed.

Funny actually, just got a call from the agency i was working with last week.

Agency: "hello Delvis, are you ok?"
ME: "Hi, yes, good thanks"
Agency: "Oh....Are you not going in this week then?"
Me: "Well, no, as I'm going on holiday wednesday, And you said it was a week contract unless they said otherwise.."
Agency: "Oh rite....Surprised they didnt say anything as there is enough work"
Me: "Well....They didn't, so I presumed there was nothing naturally".

Typical, not that I'm fussed, I would have gone mad, it was pretty much making me feel worse about myself!

That's generally how it works from my experience of agencies, not necessarily the being screwed over with wages part but the being paid directly. It's one of the major reasons as to why companies use agencies - they aren't responsible for you in terms of payroll and don't have to afford you the same benefits as a permanent employee would get.

Am I correct in thinking you got onto the Government FMDS but turned it down?

Good luck to all those searching for jobs anyway. :)

Government FMDS? Not even sure what that is buddy :)

Exscuse the delay, haven't been online in a while.

Ah, no matter then, I thought you had applied to the Government Finance Professionals Scheme at some point but apparantly not.

Good luck with the job hunting anyway. :)

Not me sadly :)

Hearing literally nothing my end...My issue is I don't know what I'm capable of, so I wont apply for certain things.

That and not knowing what I want to do in the long run :p

I'm still looking. Been out of work for 69 days and counting :( Theres absolutley no jobs doing what i know and was doing previously and my quals are awful. Now i've resigned myself to applying for telesales jobs and the like. That sort of work goes against all of my morals but i've done it before years ago and i need the cash.

Only had 1 interview in all that time so i'm not exactly in the best frame of mind and over the last 2 weeks ive been waking up late and generally feeling like i dont care. Lets hope something comes up soon before i get completely in the ****!

Join the club :) Was out of work for 6 months previously...Been out since June 5th now I believe or something, then temped for a week.

Since that, nothing...Can't really temp at that place again, as its not good for my ears.

Congratulations to people who have found something :)

Still nout my end, its getting silly....I got offered more work at this metal place using the pressing machines, but i can't do it...it's just going to destrpy my ears even more so eventually if i stayed there any longer :(

Good luck all
