Forgot how bad job searching was :(

I'm looking for a new job in Cardiff so I dont have to spend half my life travelling but there is just so little worth while jobs around (not that I'm not grateful for having a job)!!!

Just got offered a job after a few months of being unemployed following my graduation. It's the night-shift at a local place and hardly the beginning of a career ladder, but it's exactly what I need right now since I plan to go do a Masters in Interactive Media this September and I'd want some savings so I can hopefully support myself while in college.

It's true about personal connections though, every other effort I made beforehand wasn't really forthcoming and this only came about because I know the owner through mutual acquaintances.

Its silly really...all of my jobs since i left school have been because i know someone who knows someone who knows someone else, or because someone else has seen the job in the paper and told me

I'll also echo the comments about connections and relationships.
I'm a contractor these days so change roles fairly frequently and it's so important to build good relationships, whether they're with former colleagues/managers or recruitment agents.
I've just been through the process of looking for a new contract recently (starting it on Monday) and doing what I do there are a handful of agencies that deal with all the good roles.
Having good relationships with the agents stood me in good stead for hearing about roles early and getting into a new contract quickly (as well as getting several free beers from agents in the process!)

Would you believe it, agency called me back and said that I had a great interview/could do everything I needed to do for the job but then said I was too experienced.....

What a joke, and to add flames to the fire I took time out of the job I was at to go to the interview.

What a ****ing **** take. :(

This seems to be the case everywhere

My girlfriend has been to about 4 interviews recently, and they all say shes over qualified...She getting to the point where she is removing her two degrees off of her CV...

Its ridiculous

id view this as being discriminated against tbh. how can being overqualified count against you.

Because you are or can be, theoretically more likely to leave a job if it is quite obvious this isnt why you went to university for...

I know its absoloutely stupid sometimes, but its understandable in some cases.

How did you respond out of curiosity?

I just explained how to turn the tv on and how to change the channels. You have to remember though an Eskimo doesn't know what a tv or remote is so you have to explain everything in more detail of where it is, what it looks like and how it works.

I've been applying for any sort of computer related job within a 50 mile radius, just for a part time job and to learn more about computers. Sent out 20 applications and received 3 as no vacancy at this time. Very grateful for the replys though.:)

I've spent ages working on my CV and cover letter so I hope I get something out of it. If I get nothing, I guess I will try engineering related company's.

Has anybody read your CV out of interest? Friends or people on here?

Sent out applications ?

Don't get used to replies, when you're dealing with agencies you may not even get a reply after 1st and 2nd interview stages to say you've not been successful. My advice would be to take everything they say with a pinch of salt until you get written confirmation as they'll offer you the world if they think they can sell you but will have no hesitations of ignoring when they can't.

In IT there's lots of jobs but lots of applicants so you literally, like you're doing and apply for everything that looks good and keep at it.

Exactly this, I turned down a guy desperate for a job when I was Interviewing last week, for the same reason.

Just wont be happy, I'll waste time and money training him and 2 months later he has ****** off to go and do something else more deserving of his talents.

Handy tip for Job hunters, if you are going for "lowly" jobs, it is best to adjust your CV to suit.

Well just had another call from a recruiter about a consultant job someone has going, in an area I know pretty well.

Sounded all enthusiastic on the phone, sent through some more info but bet I never hear from them again :p

Must be something about today as just had another call about a different job, this time London based for a big consultancy.

They are putting me forward for it but not sure if I'll hear back from that one either.

Least they are calling you buddy, always nice :) Just keep looking though, people have the habbit of 'waiting' before they carry on searching

I have been quite lucky in the last year.

After my business folding in December 2009, I was filled with absolute fear about getting a job.

I managed to get a very nicely paid contracting position with a Telecoms company, which was not I.T based (I am an I.T noob) and a role I knew nothing about.

That finished in August as the project was complete but as always, I tried to make a big impression on my boss. This involved working hard and working long. As far as I was concerned, they were paying me handsomly for what I was doing, so I owed them more than the permanent members of the team. I still don't know how I managed to get the job as I was not really qualified but in the interview, I acknowledged this issue but I think I must have left the impression I would learn quickly.

I then managed to get onto another project at a bank which lasted for a couple of months. That came to an end in the last week of November and again, I panicked as it was coming up to Christmas. One day later, my previous boss calls me back as they needed someone for another project. it appears that my hard work had paid off as I was on the only contractor who got the call and I jumped at the chance.

That has now finished again and guess what, my old boss at the bank has called me as they want me back there on Monday for 6 months minimum.

I am not sure why I am really typing this out as I know some of you chaps have been struggling to even obtain interviews. I can fully sympathise, but I suppose what I am getting at is, is that when an opportunity arrises, grab it with both hands. Impressions make all the difference. I have two high level managers who will hopefully think of me first when they need someone, even if I am not the most qualified.

My situation is still not ideal as I have no long term security, but at least this gives me the time to explore other avenues, as I hope to work fully for myself again this year and from then on till retirement.

Best of luck to you all. :)
