Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Been out of work for 2 yrs to have child etc. Finding it very hard to get back into IT related work after being away even for this relatively short time.

Just look for low level support work if anything, or some part time shift work for example to get the CV upto scratch again?

One of our group companies stuck an ad in the paper last Thursday for a purchase ledger on not great money (got the last one from an agency but she's leaving after 6 months so don't want to pay agency fees again) and we had over 100 applications by COB on Friday probably a lot more today. A lot of them seem overqualified who are very unlikely to get an interview because we've been through 3 people in the same spot over the last 18 months and all have left for a better paid position.

You need a new comer then...problem is you need to offer them career progression, no one is going to stay in one job for years on end if its the same things constantly

Yeah that's what I'm applying for, desktop support type of positions. Seems to be all agency work these days, not something I wanted to do but it is looking like that is the route I am going to have to go.

Well probably looking for someone who is starting to/looking to study AAT and the company would probably fund them to do it at night school. (We do this at other sites and also for my CIMA). But they will need at least some PL experience because the current PL is leaving at the end of Feb so there won't be a long hand over period and the job is very busy.

There are also older people who have worked in accounts & purchase ledger etc but aren't looking for career progression just a stable job.

Haven't been made redundant or anything but could really do with working nearer home (Bolton) or in Manchester rather than up near Preston.

Been applying for a lot of jobs which match my experience and skills, and I haven't heard anything back. My CV is allright I think and my cover letters seem fine but I'm getting the feeling there are hundreds of people applying with MCSA/E's which puts me at the bottom of the pile really!

Guess I should look to doing an MCSA/MCSE/MCITP to move up the pecking order.

Really don't fancy staying here now, i've been doing a mix of 1st and some 2nd line work for nearly 3 years now and I don't fancy doing 1st line for another further 3 years, there doesn't appear to be any career progression here really at all, not especially after they've made a load of redundancies!

Icing on the cake today is an invite to an assessment day/interview for another very large company.

Really nice job, down sides are it's nigh on 250 miles away, so a definite rent a flat and travel up each week job, and have got some big presentation to do for it, great :(

Are they willing to help with living arragements do you know?

Go for it if its worth it buddy, depends how much of a lifestyle chagne you are willing to take :)

My friend occasionally goes upto Liverpool for 3-6 months of the year to work from Banbury area...all depends on the job

Tell you what is quite bad, I applied for a job recently, the person spec. which you have to cover in the application forms was a joke, it was for a teaching assistant job, 10.5 hours per week, term time only.... I met all the experiences, vastly exceeded the qualifications (5 GCSE's equivalent)....My app form was checked by English teacher at private school (excellent grammar etc) and I didn't even get offered an interview, I rang to ask why and The headteacher said app form was excellent but they had 44 people applying for the job, they expected 8-10 max and said they had teachers and people with degrees going for it, a qualification has no real bearing on the job description there....

No way! I haven't lived in the UK for 2.5 years - but 12.5K a year!!! That has to be minimum wage right? Any idea where in the country this position was?

south east
London would probably be 2-3k more

Australia's got commodities, UK's got debts, big , big debts!
There's nearly a million 16-24 year olds unemployed in the UK.

In all seriousness job hunting is now my full time job and am applying to a number of sectors, focusing on oneparticular one at the moment. About 10 applications with 1 straight rejection and nothing back from the others I returned last week.

More applications to send in this lul :)

I foresee a lost generation, the only advice I could offer anyone in that age range is, if you can afford it, and personal life allows - travel to areas of the world that need people. West Australia is still suffering a labor shortage and the strong Aussie dollar means you can (as I do) send money back to the UK. You'll have to be quick though, 1/2 of Ireland is on its way!

Have been told that by a number of senior and not so seen people at work before I finished on Friday. Plus my uncle and family have emigrated over there and are having a great time.

And with Engineering being in demand, who knows :)

There are an abnormal number of applicants for the Barclays job because they had/have nationwide vacancies- it isn't just one or two jobs. They probably have fifty spots or so.
