Formula E 2014/2015 season

I hope this is a good race, especially as there might be a little bit more focus on Formula E due to many other racing series not running at the moment, people could be after their racing fix, be important for them to put on a good show.

What Chanel is Dakar on?

It's not, not really in the UK.

Eurosport have highlights in the evening, but their show is terrible. It's a bit like the Eurovision song contest with one guy sitting in a box in the UK talking all over the footage.

I was refering more to people in SA and France, and Spain where Dakar is hugely popular. The top riders/drivers will have finished the stage by the time Formula E is on, so viewers will be able to then switch over and watch the FE race.

Fe website is horrible. However I see you can now watch the race live and there's live timings. Or perhaps that was always there.

But here we go, qualifying.

What a messy race, although it's great seeing so many mistakes which are punished by retirement.
And no idea why but it just looks faster this weekend.

Was a messy race, but it was enjoyable - the track layout was pretty good for a street circuit and certainly punishing! Just a shame about the safety car mess, and feel for Bird losing out like that.

I also thought the cars looked quicker, but that might have been down to the layout and better camera angles.

Race (ITV seemingly not putting the full race on the Player, just highlights tomorrow).

Yea an enjoyable race, messy but fun.

It seems like it's getting better each race which is definitely a positive thing. Hopefully they can sort out the weak suspension in the car, seen a fair few insidences of seemingly minor bumps breaking the car.

Why is it always armature hour with these guys. They are mostly experienced racers but they seem to get involved in a fair bit of bumper cars.

First half of the race was a boring but the second half was action packed.

They still need to sort out the team radio. The safety car period was a bit of a mess too.

I might have missed this, but I thought that London & Battersea Park were always going to be the final round? I was (and am) a little confused/surprised when I read that it was "announced" the other day.

How many people in the world are developing batteries, compared to how many are developing electric race car powertrains?

To limit costs it makes sense to limit development, and it makes sense to focus that on an area that the teams will be able to make strides in.

8 manufacturers is better than 1. It doesn't mean only 8 teams. I think it's a very sensible approach by the FIA. Opening up the whole thing would see the sport just plummet and fail in a mess of spiralling costs and massive field spread.

The batteries are the main thing though, powertrain is already very efficient. It is battery technology that needs pushing more than anything else.

Yes but my point is a bunch of race car teams are not really going to be able to make any significant progress in that industry are they? But in terms of developing electric motor powertrains in high performance cars they will make much bigger steps.

F1 teams and their engine manufacturers don't spend all their time on developing fuels, they have specialist partners who do this for them. The same applies here. Let the battery experts work on the batteries and let the race teams focus on building race cars.

Of course they can, they have the money. They can partner with leading suppliers to speed up production.

Why do you think they'll get anything from the drive train. Electrical motors and gear boxes are well understood.
As well as batteries making the races better. We are unlikely to see any major gains in the drive train.
Electric motors are generally over 90% efficient already.

There's more than just efficiency to be gained. Packaging, size, weight, they can all be improved. Formula E is the only all electric single seater series, it makes sense to focus their development on the area they are the key player in.

Are you saying that the only area of electric cars where meaningful developments can be made is batteries? Is everything else the best it will get?
