forums gone quiet?

I find it the easiest and most user friendly forum to use. It's clean, simple and well moderated, which can't be said about most of the others.

I agree. But there is no doubt the forum has aged in every sense, and has lost some of its edge.

The 'This instant and moment' thread being absent hurts the forum turnover a bit

This is why I stopped visiting, i would pop on TIAM to post something then check other bits of forum.

I now think I will post on TIAM then think,or not, then give up.

I am coming on more again but it is quieter.

OCUK forum is a shadow of its former self. The linux forum is dead, I used to like reading it but all the knowledgeable people have long since stopped posting.

GD is just full of trolls who do not want to rock the status quo; they are drones of the government.

This is why I rarely post any more.

I've noticed that threads don't disappear from the front page of GD anywhere near as quickly as they used to.

Yeah, I'm sure that I used to have to go back to page 3 some days to see all the new threads.

For me, it's certainly not the hub of activity and characters it was back when I joined or up to 2008ish.

Most of the threads in GD seem to be the same topics and most of the replies seem to be a constant spewing of forum memes.

The mods do what they can to keep things orderly and civil, but they don't always get it right.

It's also probably beacuse we're slowly getting rid of the dross of the forum, so it's a bit quieter no doubt as a result of that! :p

We try - we are currently working on things to try and get OcUK back to a more enjoyable/fair place to post and interact but this will take time.

In the mean time we're always happy to listen to suggestions either in public or via email. :)

I know you all do, and moderating is not an easy task.

Good point free I only really come here for the dross, now I have to go to imgur and youtube to get my daily dross!

I think it is mainly because people have lives outside of the forums!!

i've heard of this thing called outside but it scares me. :(

i do remember when i was into gaming a few years back and i was playing some game on probably the hottest day of the year and the forums were jammed with people moaning about how their pcs were overheating. :p

However, the userbase is still growing, we get new users joining everyday. The MM is super active

you're certainly right about the MM. i did use it to sell some bits a few weeks back and if you don't get any interest in that first hour or 2, your thread soon disappears out of sight.

Maybe because people are in bed and no football is on at 5AM..

Nail, head, hit.

try reading the first post again. i specifically mentioned the general hardware section having posts from friday on the first page. ok it was only sunday morning when i posted but in times gone by, you'd be lucky to see posts older than a hour or two on page 1. it was always active 24/7 even when the normal(!) folk in GD go to bed. these posts were some 40 odd hours old.

i see there have been additions like separate forums for PSUs/printers since i was last a regular but they don't seem particularly active to explain that kind of downturn.

I've been a member for a decade give or take. And I saw a huge drop a few years ago when the owner, at the time (naming no names), had a bit of a racist rep thing going on. And lots of weird bans and anti-forums showed up and so on. I don't think the community ever fully recovered tbh. Lost a lot of core dudes (and dudettes).

Culture change? Lots of traditional forums seem to be dying a bit as of the past few years, various reasons can be attributed to it I guess. I think a core reason is the taking off of image boards like reddit and 4chan.

Post whatever the hell you want and the moderation just sits back and generally removes stuff that's illegal. No babysitting. No hurt feelings. No BS. No arbitrary rules. Also with the takeoff of memes posting on an imageboard seems like the natural thing to do.

Plus a lot of people complain about "trolls" etc but a good chunk of these "trolls" are actually the more pro-active and interesting posters out of the bunch. I would much rather read something random as hell than another i got scammed/so and so dumped me/something about a career thread. Remove all the more interesting and random people from a forum and it becomes boring as hell. Its like removing all the noobs from a video game. It may seem like a sweet idea but the end result is a semi-predictable snorefest.

I really think bringing back TIAM would help populate the forum again. A lot of laughs were had!

I agree. There's lots of things that aren't really thread worthy, but that I'd post in TIAM which would foster a few comments back and forth. I thought it was a useful community outlet for chit chat and was sad to see the decision be made to remove it.

In the mean time we're always happy to listen to suggestions either in public or via email. :)

Bring back TIAM?
