forums gone quiet?

meh its weird this place doesnt have a general discussion thread for al lthe crap thats not important enough for its own thread but that you want to have a talk about with the other formers.

It has definitely been quieter the last year or two. I can wake up now and find the same few threads still floating around the top of the first page.

Can we move this thread to the 'Printer' section please?

I want to know where on earth the boating/sailing forum went?????

Btw, what happend to the 'This Instant and Moment' thread?

It got removed because some idiot friends and acquaintances of mine (and occasionally, though not very often, me, I admit) started spouting the same rubbish page after page after page after page, which caused anyone who used to post anything even vaguely constructive in there, to stop posting in there, leading to the thread descending even further into the realms of nonsensical rubbish, until it was decided that it should be deleted.

If the mods didn't think that the same thing would happen again, they would probably bring the thread back. But I suspect that they think it will indeed happen again, and to be perfectly honest, despite the fact that I would love TIAM back, if it came back in the same form as it was in before, I think it would possibly go the same way again as well...

I do think that to restore some balance on these boards, the thread should be brought back, but perhaps the posts should not go towards the post count (similar to the CS and MM sections), the earliest pages should be automatically and periodically deleted so that the servers aren't packed full of rubbish, and there should be some rules in place which regulate the amount of rubbish in the thread.

What you do in your free time is your business Burnsy. :p

Thanks for the info. I've been wondering why that got removed for a while now, though as you say, it's not altogether unsurprising.

Probably due to removing interesting topics from GD and giving them a subforum instead. I have never known a forum with so many subforums.

IMO the crap topics like relationships, ebay and religion should have been given subforums and the good stuff kept in GD.

Wouldn't be difficult to have TIAM September / October etc then just delete last months so everyone is aware the post count is temporary if that's what you thought was the issue.

I don't dislike that suggestion - I'll have a think about it.

We did discuss the alternative of having a subforum which incurs no postcount as well.

I'm not sure I ever posted in TIAM, but I liked how it incubated some of the fun (or "fun") GD stuff there. Including helping the community aspect a bit - good to have somewhere to just chat rubbish.

I also somewhat miss Theo's input on GD. I'm sure many don't, however.

I think having a thread that gets deleted is preferable to a subforum to get the widest possible participation. I think if it's left in a corner of the forum it'll just be visited by a small clic.

I miss Theo, but he's only got himself to blame. He was given so many chances yet continued to blatantly break the rules. The Dons simply had no other option.

This is why it got canned, I imagine. It became unreadable (also, 'clique')

I'm not so sure you have to look too hard to see our old pal.

I'm sure his latest reincarnation is hiding in plain sight.

Also in for TIAM being full of complete pants. For a long time I used to go in there to help me exercise my eye rolling and sighing technique, and to give me something to rant about to other higher functioning formers. inb4 that's all people read my posts for.

I would add that an abundance of sub-forums probably doesn't help. I expect there are loads of threads I would read and contribute to if they were in the major subforums e.g. food threads.

Also, I don't usually feel the need to pipe up about moderation on here, but whoever is moving threads pointlessly, stop it, because it only compounds the above problem.

That's the main thing... if less people are posting these days then just make it less fragmented - I mean 'On the water' its a dead forum... what is the point - no reason why you can't have a scuba diving or sailing thread alongside football or rugby threads in a general 'sports' forum.

I absolutely hate the name 'this instant and moment' because it is obviously appalling but I did like having somewhere I could drop a thought or comment that didn't merit a thread.

The old thread did get out of hand so I can understand why it went but I'm sure we could have another bash at it.

I also miss Theo, who is thoroughly likeable in real life. If he is knocking about still I haven't figured out where.

As for the forums being quiet, I don't really know about all the computer junk. GD seems a touch quieter. I blame the boating forum.
