Forza 2 Demo - Feedback

That cant be easy to map out as it involves or would normally involve chaos theory/fluid dynamics simulation.

It's clearly not using anything as complex as that, it looks like a 'canned' effect (the smoke/dirt kind of shifts outwards, then inwards again behind the cars), but it does look good.

^^ That figures :)

For ABS they must be using a simplistic interpretation to discourage usage I guess. I have noticed irl, in a cheap car that ABS will more easily (and unnessarily) engage on corners or imperfections in the road.

One step beyond ABS are modern ESC systems. Here, two more sensors are added to help the system work: these are a wheel angle sensor, and a gyroscopic sensor....
The wheel sensor also helps in the operation of CBC, since this will tell the ABS that wheels on the outside of the curve should brake more than wheels on the inside, and by how much.

If anything the above comment highlights the braking problem. In a real car it's the opposite, you go hard on the brakes at first then gradually let off as you enter the bend. It's called trail-braking, and it's almost impossible in FM2, with the pad at least.

I agree there, a car is much less likely to lock up at higher speeds so thats why you brake hard at first and before the main section of a corner preferably

Anyone tested the damage on this game beyond the cosmetic. Im not surprised the engine tone isnt changed by damage (maybe one day ) but Im wondering how subtle the rest might be.

Its locked to cosmetic in demo full game will have option to have full damage which you can destroy your car. :)

Here a message from Che should clear a few things up.

Damage is cosmetic in the final game only in arcade mode. Cars get smashed up and stuff falls off but you can keep racing without any performance penalties. In all other modes (career and multiplayer) you can set the damage you want (cosmetic to simulation).

And looks like i found Mr Latte (Joke) :D

I turned my car around and went the wrong way along the straight on the finish line. Hit a BMW at great speed while I was driving the Teg. Quite a few bits fell off if I recall.

Ye it does just if you put simulation damage on in full game your get performance hit ie steering could go funny or a damaged engine etc. :)

Not quite sure on that although think it does from what i have read before.

Had a race earlier and a span off ( too fast into a corner as usual :) ) i ended up back on the track then an AI shunted me from behind and my rear caved in and a few bits fell off including my rear bumber, the following lap i then hit my detatched bumper and almost spun off again :)

Without repeating what people have already said positive about this game, the more time i've given it the more I like it. GFX still suck (imo) but I've got used to the brakes now with everything off and auto gears.

Maybe not a write off after all. :)

Plus quidco paid some money into my account I'd forgot was coming so i might treat myself to a wheel. :D

As mentioned in the time trial thread i hope to spend about 2 hours comparing the wheel to the pad, the wheel is so much fun though and judging by some of the times in the OcUK and other forums the wheel isnt any slower which was my biggest worry with it.

The more I play it the more I like it. Getting used to the brakes too. Graphicaly, one thing I'm really impressed with is the way the smoke/dirt actually moves around the cars when they go through it, instead of just sitting there and not moving, it gets disrupted by the car's air as it goes through it.

Very nice

I agree

You should see the game running on a large screen projector, im sitting 6 feet from a 80" screen with upscaling to 1080p and although i find the lighting from Mugello a little too over saturated on the cars / reflections (different tracks have different lighting) the game imo looks pretty damn awesome.

Having played the demo some more, I'm actually a little concerned about some of the car modelling. It pretty in consistant at times, the BMW looks great for its poly count yet the 350Z has some obvious problems with it's rear end with poor geometry causing dodgy shading.

I think they made a compramise with the brakes, with limited range on the trigger and sensitivity is probably a little poor too, they've set it so that more travel is used for the last half/third or whatever of actual brake travel. Giving you the fine adjustment where it's needed. It seems to work ok to me.

The one thing im gutted about with Forza 2 is the replays. So dull and uninspiring just like the first game. Hardly any exciting TV camera style shots where you get a good view of the race, mainly just bumper/sideskirt views and rotating-around-the-car shots - its as if they couldnt be bothered. This is one aspect where the GT games excel. Its my only niggle with the game though.

Personally I think game looks great. I don't know what some of you guys were expecting
Cars imo looks ok. Nothing to go mad about, but not bad ether. Amount of environment details is sometimes silly. For example, left of the first corner, behind the wall is fire brigade, hardly can see it but its there, lol. As for the replay mode, I must agree it sucks.
Driving is quite difficult at the moment, but I'm enjoying it a lot. Looking forward to the full game and I hope there will be some options to tweak wheel and pedals.

True the replay mode could be better, i think thats one of the main differences Forza unlike GT doesnt really try to make the cars the central showpecies, seems Forza prefers to more involved as a racer than a looker.

However do remember you can select an exterior view and pan the camera in realtime just as possible within the race. Not every racing game allows that and im not aware of it in GT series so you can still get to ses all the action you want if a tv camera misses it.

to me the game did not look that good ,but it's only a demo and i'm sure the final version should be better
the handling for me was spot on
after about 3 or 4 times round the track i was beginning to enjoy it..

Ye from demo i do love the damage though but as i said its locked to cosmetic in demo so does not effect how car behaves.

And what happened to the age old excuse you could not mess up a Ferrari although no doubt MS must have paid a packet well i think.

Surely you've got it back to front. The Forza replays focus on your own car too much, whereas the GT replays always show a wider angle so you can see what's happening in the race. GT 4's replays improve on GT 3 by giving you the choice of a conventional TV camera replay, or a highly stylised flashy style which is extremely well done in my opinion.
