Forza 2 latest Update and Demo Discussion Thread

I thought about that but my LCD gives off to much light which as you know isn't ideal for projectors.

You'd have to turn the brightness down, but it should be liveable with..

My PJ is in my front room, and so isn't in the ideal conditions with light coloured walls, but I've found I can play on the consoles while the missus watches her usual trash on the 42" LCD without it ruining the contrast that much.. It's not a film, so black levels aren't my usual concern!...

Question:

What do players here think is required for Forza 2 to ensure good racing, taking on board the problems seen with PGR3 and many other games in the past. We can only hope some of the below problems are tackled if not we will have yet another game where he who cheats usually wins.

Here are some of my hates...

Cutting Corners.
No penalty or big enough reduction of speed to deter it.

Wall Riding.
Some will think why brake when you can go faster sliding round the outside wall/barrier. Scraping a wall should slow a car down immensly.

Ramming, deliberate shunting.
Heavy contact and no penalty to offending driver or damage to deter them from repeatedly doing it.

Going in wrong direction.
Why cant a car be disqualified.

As yet we have not heard how the "Penalty" system within Forza 2 will work but its something they looked at from a very early stage.

Pit Pass No.1
On drafting and the scoreboards issue: "The drafting and scoreboards issue is a great debate, even in the Turn 10 Studio. Like any good debate, both sides have good points. Most people just see their opinion as truth… and that’s that. Designer’s can’t afford to see the world that way, or they risk closing the door on innovation. When you have a game as popular as Forza Motorsport, you have a very diverse set of players to look out for. We will do what we believe is right for the game and the community ecosystem. We’ve looked at several options for solving the drafting behavior issue. Here are some things we're considering, but have not made a decision on:

Add penalty time for every second in the draft. Accrue that penalty faster the more your coefficient of friction is being reduced.

Do not write to the Hot Lap boards from Multiplayer, only from Single Player Modes.

Add more information to the scoreboards so other players can at least tell what mode the thing was set in and what assists are on.

Do not write any hotlap that included drafting.

Do nothing because drafting is part of simulation and hotlaps in the real world can also be set under race conditions.

Again, these are just possible solutions that have come up through our many brainstorm sessions. You might feel that we have to do one of the above, but it is not that simple. You'll know more when we know more."

Cutting Corners.
Only thing to do here is have a sand trap or barrier/obstacle on the inside.

Wall Riding.
Make the barrier 'sticky' or have gaps in it that catch the car.

Ramming, deliberate shunting.
The cars need to be 'weak' at the front, maybe not visible damage but some mechanical failing.

Going in wrong direction.
Indeed, disqualify.

Drafting -

Do nothing because drafting is part of simulation and hotlaps in the real world can also be set under race conditions.

Drafting is part of racing, leave it alone.

Do not write any hotlap that included drafting.
That would be my choice, I can't see a viable reason why you'd include drafted times?

Cutting Corners.
Suspension damage and/or dirty tyres.

On that note, does any know if after an off track excursion it'll take time to 'clean' your tyres?

I remember Geoff Crammonds F1 (latest version) had some sort of penalty system like this on hard, i.e. cut a corner you get a go slow for 30 seconds ram a person you get an compulsory pit stop. Stuff like that.

Good points...

Another gripe i have is that in many racing games if you do go off and you loose some time to the AI cars why the hell is it you can catch them up again within no time at all.

Going off should result in more loss of time....

There's no rubber banding in FM2.

I certainly found that once you crash in Forza, you can forget about catching the AI up again. Which is exactly how it would be in real life after all. (This is assuming cars of matched performance of course.)

As much as I am looking forward to Forza the only thing that really annoys me is 8 players online, coming from a PC race with a grid of 40 onto just 8 is going to seem quite poor, I really cant understand why big games like this cannot offer the user a dedicated server option, like Rainbow does for instance so we could have more online, or even MS themselves hosting or even renting dedicated servers to us users who would love to have maybe 20 drivers on the grid for a league.

It's not just 8 players online. It's 8 cars in any one race, it's in order to maintain the magical 60fps everyone wants.

Also, what PC game has 40 cars? That's ridiculous.

FWIW Toca Race Driver 3 on the Xbox has 21 cars and 60fps... so it is possible.

(A version of Toca is coming out on the 360 in future)

Same thing is it not, 8 player races, rFactor can have 40 cars easily.

Nice car line up
I am sure it's down to graphics as well.. they will have tuned it all for 8 cars..

I don't understand why graphics aren't configurable ala PC..
I'd love the option of more 3d grass, and all the good effects but reduced framerate to 30fps, but when I need to , switch all that crap off and have the full 60fps.. and for 20-30player races, turn off just about everything...

Still 8 should be just about OK..
