Frankly obscene Ring 42.8% subscription increase

Realistically most people will suck it up, as there are few viable alternatives. You either write off the cost of 4 years of subscription to buy something that runs locally knowing that you'll never be forced to pay for a sub on it again. Or you jump ship to another competitor who will also increase their prices - fully expecting Google nest to announce another hike in their plan.

As above though, we all thought people would be ditching Netflix in droves after the password sharing ban. Cue Netflix announcing they've now got more subscribers than ever before, meaning people caved and signed up anyway.

And unlike many subscriptions, video doorbells do provide a good service for the cost.

Video storage is not cheap, developing and maintaining a polished native mobile app is not cheap or easy, the same with building out and maintaining a reliable back end infrastructure that will get your notifications to you quickly and ensure the live video feed is usable.

There's a reason some of the alternatively like Eufy are a little rougher, it's not easy to build and maintain a service like that.

£50 a year is still decent tbh, espcially not to have to trouble shoot your own expensive on prem system.

that 50 is per device though not for your "ring" ecosystem

i will be removing my ring doorbell next week and getting a reolink

Just one years use due to no subscription will of almost paid for itself

You say that, but as often as not, I get an unable to connect to live stream... or no video available for motion events, and the motion zones were crap and I could never get them working.
Definitely was not a polished and troublefree service. I ended up turning off "there is a person at your door" alerts after getting sick of being shown a van driving past.

(and the doorbell is 2m away from an AP)

I tried to get help with the zones and false triggers in a live chat on the app, and they told me they couldn't help and I had to phone a helpdesk.

The underlying service is DEFINITELY not worth the money IMHO. It all feels like a hacked together beta.

EUFY has security concerns.
Reolink I had a look at and I can only see one main doorbell they do, which looks to be the type where you have to take the doorbell inside to charge it if you are running with the built in battery. That's super lame. Ring has nice chunky batteries that you can remove and take inside to charge, whilst you whack a spare in. They also last a fair while. For me it lasts about a month, but I have a lot of stuff turned on and they are triggered literally all the time with couriers.

Reolink is hard wired also

Yeah, the service does have to be good though. Not used Ring for a while, so not too up to speed with how well it's current offering is working.

This makes Eufy the better option TBH. Ring isn't worth the cost.

Ring also has some big security concerns! It's been compromised at least once that we know of.

I'd say it's less secure as Eufy relies on its own secure WiFi network from it's hub and stores the data locally. Always better than sending it to a cloud as you don't know what else has access to it.

you dont have a plug socket anywhere near at all inside the home? you only need to run doorbell wire to it which is only a few mm thick

Yeah but then you need a transformer to convert down to 12-24v which has to go somewhere and needs mains input, then a hole drilled through the wall etc? I cba with any of that as I don't have any of that existing and it will just look messy the way my hall is. I just want a battery one.
The Reolink I am surprised to see can be unclipped in under 1 second and simply stolen. The SD card is also inside it with all your footage on. Hmm.
I'm not saying Rings can't be stolen, but Amazon used to replace it for you if it was (for free) and they have a "security" screw on the bottom, then 4 additional screws mounting it. I'm not saying a thief would not unscrew all these easily, but it would certainly take a minute or so which is more of a deterrent to attempting theft of it.
Anyway a minor issue.
Reolink you have to use their singular chime. I currently have my Ring set to ring an Amazon Echo Flex plug adapter thing in the hall and landing and also trigger alert events on echo devices in other rooms for alerts. It's all very convenient and works beautifully to be honest.

I think I remember something about Ring security in the cloud being an issue which they fixed. EUFY to this day have still not fixed products out there to my knowledge. There is a thread on these forums about it. It's not just the issue itself, it's that EUFY played it down and even tried to lie about stuff from what I recall. Their response has been really poor.

yes but not really.

tbh, it's picking whether you want an american or chinese company spying on (the proverbial) you

If you want facial rec and/or picture notifications (iirc), the video still gets sent to Eufy - certainly the case with the 1080p model. Remote connections are also proxied through Eufy from what i can tell.

Never paid for a Ring Subscription, but then I only actually use it as a doorbell for live interactions. Never used it as a security device as well.

The Protect Pro subscription isn't increasing then? We have the Pro subscription because we have multiple devices, 2 x flood pro cameras and the doorbell.
