Frankly obscene Ring 42.8% subscription increase

I would definitely consider the Reolink as a replacement to my Nest if it dies, seeing as they have a PoE version now. Or potentially the UniFi doorbell now that I have a Dream Machine Pro. Staying away from the unifi cameras though, very overpriced for what they are IMO. Maybe if money was no object.

I wanted to keep it simple, not overly expensive (Was £60 cheaper than the Ring it replaced) and to tie in with the Argus PT, also from Reolink, that covers the front of my property.

More tech job redundancies incoming on the Ring front i wonder.

I read a not too long ago that Alexa was severely overestimated for the money spinner it was set out to be. Subscription charges incoming for Amazon's talking clock too maybe.

Even though price increases are never welcome, especially of this %, the initial outlay is cheap so this effectively funds x years of unlimited cloud-based storage.

I'm still happy with my full Ring sub, and the kit for that matter.

I haven't because my own subscription is due on the 1st March. I saw it mentioned elsewhere by someone who claims to have done it.

I've been talking to a friend who has his own business fitting security systems, he loves Ring because so many people buy them, have issues with their WiFi (it's really not very good) and then ask him to replace them with something else. However, when I described all the features to him and everything that it's capable of doing he said that fifty quid a year is a decent price! It may be a decent price but it's the sudden increase with no perceived benefit that's the problem here.
I fitted the Ring doorbell in November 22 so presumably my subscription runs from November and, if it's an annual subscription, won't be renewed until November this year.

The email from Ring indicates that from March it'll cost a fiver per month and that's that, so to me it looks like monthly subscription anyway.

Even so, as your friend said it's still good value for money IMO so I'll just moan about it and suck it up.

I read somewhere in the Ring app that the device will be supported until at least 2027, so if the hardware survives until then I'll consider changing to something else at that point. Unless the subscription goes super silly.

It is quite a disgusting price increase, right up there with insurance companies.

However, the Ring does everything I and the family need. I'm not convinced spending more money than the actual price increase on a new doorbell camera is the right way to go. Yes, I'd like to tell Ring to shove it up their ring but in the end who's actually going to be hurt from such a decision.

Sure I'll save money in the long run (not ever if I got the Ubiquiti UVC-G4, gulp!) but the hassle of installing, learning and teaching the family to use a new one isn't priceless.

What's most annoying about this is you could see it coming, yet still like a mug, I got a Ring doorbell! In my defence, at the time when I got it, I genuinely did look at other things on the market and nothing beat Ring as an overall package. I also refused to buy the EUFY ones because of the neglect to customers over a long period of unfixed security issues, which still may not be fixed I don't know as have not checked in a while.

Ring works well and has a very mature app/support etc. I don't personally mind having it all in the cloud and a subscription when it cost less. I think I first paid about £20 when I got it. When it went up to £35 I personally still thought it was worth it but about the limit of my annoyance level to drop it and do something about it, on the basis that a whole new door bell/setup/adapter/installation would be way more than stumping up the extra for a fair few years. I also have spare Ring batteries I rotate so I'm invested in it kind of. Typical really. They've played the perfect game. Make a good product and get the monopoly on it with a sub that means you need it or it nerfs the product. Then gradually increase sub.

I'll probably do my usual to be honest. Carry on being bent over but ensure OCUK hears of it. That will definitely teach them.
Top self awareness 10/10

Why did I get an alert to a thread I've not seen or even replied to?

I jumped ship to Reolink when it increased last time and considering this current hike, I'm glad I did.

It was me, stop eating Kiwi Fruit skin, it's odd.

My main gripe with ring is there's no option for 24/7 recording, so you have to rely on motion detection being accurate. At least with nest you get 24/7 recording.

Only the legacy plans have 24/7 recording. I think it was about 3 maybe 4 years ago that Google moved to events based recording.

I own a nest, but annoyingly I had recommended the Ring doorbell to both my parents and in-laws because the 1080p camera was something like £30 in the black Friday sale. I guess standard sales tactics apply - sucker you in with a low priced product and then sting you on the usability fees. Certainly not the first product to do that, and won't be the last.

Are there products out there that do everything the ring does including the alerts via an app where you can answer and speak to people when out, send auto replies, get 15 minute snap shots constantly, people detection for motion, configure motion zone, integrate with Alexa home stuff so you can trigger events from doorbell push etc?
I feel like if I get something else, it will have some feature missing or won't work as well and I will regret just not paying an extra £15 a year.

I’ve got a logitech one. Doesn’t do the auto replies thing or integrate with Alexa as it’s for homekit but I can trigger automations and chime on homepods etc

The fact I don’t have to pay a sub fee to use it and it’s integrated with my kit is perfect for me. Although I’ve now noticed when looking it up that they’ve added this to the terms -
A supported iCloud plan to store history — one camera on 200GB plan / up to 5 cameras on 2TB plan (plans subject to change).

So apple are being sneaky buggers as well, so technically I do pay a sub but I already have and use icloud storage with the family.

All of my stuff has been bullet proof, altho the doorbell did eat an older microsd card.

That was mostly when I was dropping in older and slower cards into the camera's, but has been fine for quite a while now, since dropping in better cards.

Well this is a bit of an eye opener. I was considering a video doorbell for my mum but I didn't even know it was a subscription thing to use it properly, I thought it was a 'one and done'! Mind changed now.

The concern is next year they'll just whack the price up like this again. Ours is under a year old I think so will probably suck it up for now but I'm getting a bit bored of getting constantly fleeced with literally everything.
