The impression I got from him on the radio was that the throttle was stuck but he was very adamant when he was interviewed that he'd made a mistake.

It's nothing to do with Ferrari drivers not being allowed to criticise the team, no sir.
Thought that when commentary had been saying so, but when they replayed the incident and radio message immediately after it seemed far more clear he was talking about getting out the wall, then Binotto had the interview saying the same.
I think Ferrari need to make sure drivers aren't trashing the team, because literally everyone else was after yesterday's race. :D

Listen to the engine as he starts to spin here

the engine sounds as though it is revving still, even though he is in the spin, could this be a stuck throttle, or was he trying to power out of the slide, it does sound like hes revving a bit still as he hits the wall but cant hear properly because of the commentator

He didn't leave space on the outside though.
But as this year's guidelines for overtaking on the inside say, as long as he is 'significantly' alongside by the apex and can still make the corner in a safe and controlled manner, that's enough to earn the right to expect the car being overtaken to provide space.

The guidance doesn't make any mention of the overtaking car needing to allow room.

In effect, though I don't particularly like it, as long as you can get mostly alongside by the apex, you've pretty much won the corner if you can keep it between the lines.

Leclerc says it was his mistake so I don't see any reason to play amateur analysis.

Feels like Leclerc is not yet good enough to win a competitive WDC, yeah he's been let down by Ferrari too but that's a second substantial unforced error this season. He needs to work on that if he's to reach his full potential.

Initially I though it just stepped out on him, but look at the tyre marks!

He's either seriously over cooked that, or somethings wrong with it.

Just accept what he said. He made a mistake. It doesn't require any further analysis. It isn't the first time this season or previous seasons he's made them.
Yeah exactly. Does a good job of reminding everyone that just because you're in the fastest car, or super fast, these drivers aren't robots and there's a lot at play to keep a lead at the front. You can't exactly get there and drive easy for 50 laps.

Really interesting how the Merc is still really close to the rest of the midfield in qualifying (I think their drivers are making the difference sometimes there), but are firmly the third fastest car in the race. They often get split by another cat.

It's like they are nearer to the midfield than RB and Fer in qualy, but then nearer to RB and Fer than the rest of the pack in the race.

I was in the kitchen when they played his interview on Sky for the first time part way through the race. The TV was in the lounge.

I shouted through to my wife “I don’t believe a word of it”.

Not sure why, just spidey senses tingling - his speech and what he said didn’t seem like Charles, it all seemed a little off somehow. Saw the actual interview later on, and again just didn’t buy it. Something didn’t click. His eyes were not saying the same thing as his mouth and his body language was strange. Can’t put my finger on it.

I don’t have an agenda, I’m not a Ferrari or Charles fan and I wholly accept Charles has made his share of errors. I’m not interested in dissecting camera views and team radio or making endless posts on what went wrong.

But based on his interview, I just don’t believe what he said. Maybe it was a genuine mistake on his part, but everything about his interview afterwards was off (to me anyway).

Funnily enough my wife said the same and she rarely agrees with me!! :p

So Charles and the team have stated several times it was nothing more than a driver error, yet you still belive there is some conspiracy.
Do you also believe Elvis is still alive living on the moon in a London bus?

to be fair both are plausible, not the Elvis bit :p

conspiracy
I completely agree with @BuffetSlayer, there was something wrong with that interview. It didn’t come across right, the body language was all wrong.

Historically, Ferrari hold their drivers on a very tight rein, it’s very rare for them to say anything bad about the team. Following the finger wagging recently where Charles laughingly said that it was being done to cheer him up, I don’t believe him when he says it was a driver error.

I think the throttle stuck, same as it did in the last race but that he’s been instructed to say what he did.

If that makes me a conspiracy theorist then so be it.

I have no idea if this is relevant or not but stood trackside at turn 6 the Ferraris sounded exceptionally strange getting on the power - much louder than any other car and a very, very different noise. On the way in, they had almost no overrun noise which again was different to every other car. They looked to me to be quite spiky to drive but equally Charles could have just binned it or it could have been the throttle.

I admit that I am more cynical than many but given what we know about Ferrari team management, I think it is a stretch to brand people as conspiracists because they don’t swallow what the team say in public.

However, if my non-belief is something that marks me as a conspiracist, then I am happy to wear that label if it makes others feel happy :)

I also do not believe in God, so I guess I am rocking that particular conspiracy theory too!!
