French Open Tennis 2017

Yes! Performance of the Championships from Ostapenko.

As soon as she got on top of a point she hit it cross court to move Halep out wide then smashed winner after winner down the line when it was returned. You literally can't play a point better imo.

That's a bit hyperbolic IMO, I think Wawrinka's backhand around the net post in the 2015 final was better.

Stan looks a bit flat but Nadal's not giving him a a chance. So often the final is a bit of a let down after some of the matches that have gone before (Wimbledon 2013 springs to mind, the Delpo/Djokovic semi was unbelievable).

It's pretty crazy. I also can't understand why anyone would pay lots to go watch him in a Roland Garos final, terrible value for money! :p Rafa's dominance has killed any semblance of atmosphere.

Does anybody else think it's possible that Nadal could equal (or even better) Federer's 18 slams? Fitness permitting, which I know is a big question mark with Nadal, he's got to be in with a decent shout of picking up another French Open or two - at least I can't see anybody ousting him as the favourite there any time soon. And unless Djokovic recaptures the form of a couple of years ago, Nadal (again fitness permitting) will go into the other 3 slams amongst the favourites too.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Nadal win another 3 slams, the question will be whether Federer can win any more himself.

I can see Nadal equaling Federer's record if he can stay fit, he's just too good at the French Open not to win more if he's physically able to play as he wants. However even if he does equal or even exceed Federer's total I can't imagine I'll be changing my opinion on which of the two is the greatest player.

It's a tricky one for him because Wimbledon will probably be his 2nd best chance of winning a slam after the French. In recent years, particularly in the 2nd week, the courts begin to wear and it not too dissimilar to playing on clay for him. With it coming so soon after the French though is always going to make it a challenge for him fitness wise though.

@semi-pro waster As I've said before, for me even if Nadal doesn't equal Federer's record, his 15 slams is a greater achievement than Federer's 18. That's personal opinion though.

Well done Nadal. I am torn as I am a massive Federer fan and want him to get the slam record but really good to see Nadal come back from a pretty low point. Would be funny if these two just started bossing it again making a joke of Andy and Novak :p.

Its really hard to decide who is the greatest player ever from Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

Federer just has immaculate technique and dominated the game effortlessly for a long time. The wimbledon final between Federer and Nadal is the best match of tennis I have ever seen by a long shot.

Nadal at his peak was an animal and just crushed most opponents. Ridiculous power coupled with amazing precision. I feel like he was almost guaranteed to get a serious set of injuries just because of the way he played and the obvious imbalance in his physique.

Djokovic is arguably the most dominant of them all but there is just something that never gets me that excited about him. There is nothing "special" about him. He never gives up and is a very very good player but I just don't find myself as excited about his as I am about Nadal and Federer.

Murray is just a poor mans Djokovic. His recent form has just been embarrassing and the only reason he ever got to number 1 in the world is due to the other top players going off the boil. Its great to have someone from GB at the top of the sport but you never felt like he was the best.

Federer is my all time favourite tennis player for many reasons and I always hope he wins a few more tournaments before he retires. This golden generation of tennis players will be over in a few years and thats a real shame.

You need a gimmick in their technique to get excited for a tennis player?

Djokovic has excellent defensive game with ludicrous flexibility when tested.

Djokovic is an amazing player but I can understand not really finding the way he plays all that enjoyable to watch. It is astonishing the shots he returns, how reliable his game is/was and how good his fitness is but I can see the argument that Nadal or Federer have something more in terms of attacking play - Djokovic is perhaps more like playing an incredibly flexible wall. That may be an unfair perception but it does come from how his game seems to be weighted, keep returning shots and your opponent will either have to hit a winner or make a mistake and the odds are it'll be the latter eventually.

Murray's game is similar and I'd have to confess I'm not always a big fan of watching his matches either but that's mostly because I find it nervewracking, I want him to do well, partly because he's British but also because he seems like a genuinely nice bloke.
