Fuel - Codemasters

Not as big as I thought, it's around 60 miles wide.

How do I unlock the other sections? Do I have to win the star challenges for that?

It looks nice but i am bored with it already. The audio is rubbish, they could have used realistic engine sounds and my g25 wont configure....but apart from that!

The more I play, the more of a half-arsed job I feel Codemasters have done. These days at a bare minimum 50% of the game should be dedicated to multiplayer, and in terms of longevity more like 60+%. However Codemasters seems to have gone with about 5%.

There's no 'server list', if you do manage to find a session in progress, it's usually only got a couple of other people on and to top it all off, once you finally get a online game going, as soon as it's finished you're dropped back to free roam (which it's pretty useless in itself).

Unless a future patch will add these features, I really wouldn't bother with this game until it was in the bargain bin. It's such a shame really, because the gameplay it pretty good, but with such a poor multiplayer aspect I can feel myself drawn away to my usual games.

Got mine today. Had to wait a few extra days but for £17.99 its a bargain.

I think this game is terrific. Very undemanding to play controls are top notch and the gfx are a technical achievement considering the amount of disk space (3.83GB) and how good they look in places. Asobo + Codemasters have done a very good job here on creating a PC port which is the best of all versions and has very good FPS plus LIVE achievements which give it a long life. Not sure if its cross platfrom vs 360 players as the box says yes but not been able to verify yet.

Its only an arcade offroad racer so obviously gameplay is samey but wipes the floor with Motorstorm 1 + 2 and demonstrates yet again the PC is a long way ahead of all other gaming systems technically.

First impressions - disappointing. It's like a half-arsed unfinished clone of Motorstorm.

GRID had me hooked within a few minutes, no sign of that with Fuel. There's none of the fun or polish of Motorstorm and the vehicles handle like something out of TOCA Touring cars (the old one!).

I wouldn't bank on a patch anytime soon. The Multiplayer fix and DLC for GRID has been "coming real soon now" for well over 6 months. I reckon there's more chance of Duke Nukem forever getting released first.

What people are saying so far sums it up tbh, the multiplayer is disappointing and you've got all that land to roam but not much to do!

I was hoping it'd be a replacement for TDU as far as free roam enjoyment goes but sadly it's not.

It needs more features like:

Manual gears
Cockpit/bonnet view
Better online
More traffic.

It's a shame really, because TDU was so immensely fun online or offline.
However, the features you mention could easily be added in future patches, given that Codemasters/Asobo actually support the game.

TDU was also lacking I think but was and still is so addictive!

Even with those additions FUEL would still be so lacking.

TDU had a different style, so cruising around the island with others didn't feel out of place. This is all about the racing, of which online there is minimal at best. :(

Yea but I think online and cruising this game would be so awesome too, it's at least 2-3 times bigger than TDU, and good fun off road too, I mean it's about 60-70 miles wide, that's like Leeds to Liverpool!

Why would they add manual gears, realistic cockpit views and more traffic to an arcade racer set in a deserted area....?

Once again, most of the complaints about this game seem to be from people who have completely missed what this game is trying to be... Its like going into a thread about Pro Evo and complaining theres to much football in it...

Fuel is an arcade game set in a deserted massive area for exploring. YEs its got its faults, but if nothing else, it makes me look at games like GTA, Burnout and Need for Speed and think "man, those maps are tiny!".

Fuel is far superior to every other off road racing game on the PC or any other platform. Its only meant to be an arcade experience. Forget realism you need another game this is purely about having an arcade style blast with great gfx and amazing FPS for the level of detail. The procedural landscapes are pretty detailed considering the HD space and the game is as good as this type could ever be.

I have this game on the PC and I think its the best Arcade Off Road Racer I have ever played. The graphics are superb - the handling for me is perfect and its just good plain fun.

This is for the benefit of those who might not know how to change the default music that is played in game.

Find this folder:
C:\Program Files\Codemasters\FUEL\MUSIC

All of the default music files are stored here. For example if you wanted to change the freeride music to something else.
Rename a copy of MyFavouriteMusic.wav to freeride.wav and overwrite the freeride.wav file. In game your chosen music will automatically play.

You can do this with all of the music tracks in the music folder. If you want to keep the original files just rename them to say org_freeride.wav.

Also you may have to convert an mp3 or wav file to this format for maximum compatibility.
Stereo 16bit 32khz. Any decent freeware or otherwise sound editor/conversion software will be able to do the job.

The problem I have or you may find is that the spluttering engine backfire type sounds do not go away even if you turn the sfx sound option all the way down.

For the benefit of anyone who want to cure the popping corn spluttering sound. (This will only work work in WinXP as Vista & Win7 have no sliders available for this purpose)

Just reduce the hardware sound acceleration to either basic or none.

start - run - dxdiag (type this into the field) and go to the sound tab.

Hmmm... Maybe because some people like to use manual gears.

Maybe because some people like cockpit views. Just cause it is an arcade game does not mean these feature should not be in.

TDU has it all and it is an arcade racer.
