Fuel price discussion thread (was ‘chaos’)

It's eye watering to look at. With a 60 mile/day commute its not an insignificant cost to work now.

Kind of hoping work gets more flexible on WFH sooner or later. I am relatively OK and have bandwidth to soak this in my earnings, for now, but some I work with won't be so fortunate.

175.9 for petrol here at the Asda. Costco brum is the cheapest at 168.9. Diesel at the Costco is 176.9.

RAC continue their quioxitic crusade in search for the 5p, and (another) web site showing forecourt prices,
they said/r4today the uk wholesale price is not avallable for uk population to consult, like it is in Switzerland, apparently.

some of neighbours seem to be regularly leaving earlier for work - cambridge, at wrong time, can be a nightmare sitting in a slow moving queue burning petrol

People need to get a lot smarter with their driving. I am seeing a lot more cars than usual doing 56mph.

Coasting in gear for example before coming up to a roundabout. Coasting in gear when going down hill. Turning off ignition when stationary for long periods. Light acceleration and changing up early. I did a test when we went to Ikea the other month. On the way there I did the journey being frugal and achieved 42MPG 3 up in an old petrol Saab Turbo with 290BHP. On the way back I just went for it and ended up on 33MPG so almost a 10MPG drop. I got home a mere 10 minutes earlier on a 90 minute journey.

Ever wondered why lorries (the ones driven correctly) are really slow coming up to roundabouts? It is because they already started coasting half a mile before hand as their weight allows them to go vast distances without even using fuel/using little. You can get 20-30% coasting if you are really on it or driving in really hilly areas like the M62 for example.

One of the things I don't miss about regularly using ICE vs BEV, the waste in fuel, sat still in the BEV uses barely nothing, and commuting is much more stop start, stop, stop, stop, stop, start, than it is a continuous movement.

I put £12 unleaded in a car yesterday, which got me 100 miles on the GOM - £12 is more than what I'd spend in an entire month if charging from the grid, and would cover nearly 1100 miles.

My 1.0 Focus (3-cyl) burned 0.2-0.3gal/hr sat on idle according to the dash, sometimes a touch higher as the A/C compressor kicks in. That's around 1 litre used per hour of idling. Or 1.8% of the tank per hour.

My Kona varies massively, but anywhere from ~350w to 2kW load depending on whether it's heating or cooling, according to the EV live power monitor in the infotainment system. That means 0.5% - 3.1% of the battery charge (64kWh total) per hour.

I'm averaging 40+ MPG in my Mini JCW. A lightish car and that B48 is relatively frugal. Glad I didn't go the i30N in the end.

My commute is fairly short and flowing @ 25 miles return. Do 12hr shifts so on 14 days a month vs usual 20.

Why and how is it possible these oil companies are getting away with record profits at a time like this?

I’ve really been noticing the benefit of the mild hybrid tech in my 520d recently, especially sat in eco pro on my ~35 mile commute. Averaging around 52mpg over ownership so far.

Coming from a D300 velar, time between fill ups is really noticeable.

So glad I didnt get the 840i in the end.

Wanna really have your head explode? We're subsidising the oil industry...

Fuel price may well be the final nail in the coffin (alongside lack of time and opportunity to drive and maintain it) for the toy car. It has already been relegated to a couple of club meets per year which I was able to justify with sub £100 insurance and claiming back half the road tax each year but my last trip out in it, at todays prices, would have been around £118 in fuel alone. That is an expensive day out!

It'll make it all the more special. I certainly picked the wrong time to get my Lotus back on the road .
