Fuel price discussion thread (was ‘chaos’)

I still remember when petrol pretty much doubled in price way back when, from around 35p a gallon to around 70p the next day!

It triggered a spate of scum stealing petrol from cars, wonder if the same is going to happen again.

Happening already with trucks. Pretty much every truck parked up on the A66 last week had their fuel drained. At work and two other haulage companies in North Yorkshire had their bulk fuel tanks drained. The stuff is worth even more now.
 
wasn't that before locking caps .. was that why they introduced them -
could get a no petrol kept in this car overnight , or ev sticker

I imagine they just resort to drilling the tank now, which is worse as it means an expensive repair for the owner.
 
Super unleaded from Sainsburys this morning was 1.58.9, a 10p rise in ten days since I last filled up. :(
Got around 3mpg more from it across half a tank though!
 
For the first time ever I'm not lolling at fuel prices as I get paid my 45p/mile door-to-door. That will actually just cover the tank of fuel now :cry:
 
And many have saved substantial sums WFH so even compared to what they were spending previously this will be a double whammy.

That might be the only thing to soften the blow of increased expenses - that plus more companies are in favour of WFH for even some portion of the week.

I suspect it will get to a point where workers will be requesting more WFH because of the costs involved getting to/from the office.

Offset by the increased energy consumption of heating/lighting a house/running computers/monitors 5 days a week with the inflated fuel prices.

You will either use fuel (directly or indirectly, unless you walk/cycle) to get to work, or use fuel by being at home. You can't escape this (unless you walk/cycle)
 
I need to get petrol tomorrow although as work is close I only do 5000-6000 miles a year, I don't envy the people with big commutes must really suck at the moment.

Yeah thankfully i no longer do long commutes. I used to rack up about 30,000 miles a year and averaging costs about 8p a mile (back when diesel was 110p/l). At todays price that would cost me an extra £1200 a year.

- Sit in a lighter room and it won't need lighting
- Where thicker clothes, or look to heat an individual room will reduce how much the house needs heating
- Move beefy work computers to the office, and then remote/ssh from a laptop at home
- Use an energy efficient monitor.

A laptop and monitor shouldn't exceed £1 a day at current prices to run. So the extra costs come down to heating and lighting.

Lots of assumptions baked into that, and you can assume changes could be made to commuting too:

1) Change driving style
2) Swap for a more economical or EV car
3) Take public transport instead even if takes longer
4) Change jobs to one closer
