Fuel price discussion thread (was ‘chaos’)

I know the current fuel prices won’t stay this high forever, I hope. Just wonder how many people are now seriously considering moving over to a hybrid or going EV. I must admit it’s crossed my mind.

I’d like to get a EV, but I can’t justify it even with current fuel prices. I own my current car outright and depreciation is now minimal due to age (2010) and mileage (125,000.) I ‘only’ pay for tax, fuel and maintenance. My high annual mileage means leasing and PCP deals are very expensive. With my current mileage I’ll keep running bangers until used EVs with suitable range are within budget.

How much are you spending on fuel then? Or more to the point what do you consider high annual mileage?

I am in the same boat, my current car is a 2010 with 138k miles and I am only paying my running costs. If I wanted to go EV or a decent hybrid I would need some kind of finance. I currently plan on changing my car next year if I can save enough.

Ill wait before i move from petrol.

30mpg is 6.6* miles per L
1KW will get me 3.8Miles on a tesla 313mile range battery. (On tesla numbers... its actually FAR less than this.. more like 2.5-2.8miles per 1kw)

1Kw at a fast charger is around 45-50p per kw...

to get around the same miles, id need around 90-110p of electric vs the £1.70 for L of fuel.

What's the point?

Charge at home and wake up to a ‘full tank’ ?

Who remembers to do that every night though?
And the way things are going, we'll be paying 40p per kwh soon anyway
I've had a BEV for the last 30 months and have only forgotten to charge it twice.

There have been a few times I just couldn't be bothered to go out and do it in the evening, but it's just like with filling up really. There were a few times I couldn't be bothered to go and fill up on my way home, and then got in the next day and realised it was empty..

Well, I would 100% forget 7/10 times.

There will always be a cheaper ‘off peak’ electricity rate.
This is a means to steer people to use electricity when the demand is lower.

LoL, you'd forget. You park, get out of car, plug it in, go in house. Do you sometimes forget to close your front door as well?
Some of the nonsense that people come up with to justify not going electric cracks me up. I'm used to seeing people who apparently commute from Dover to Glasgow every day without stopping for a wee but forgetting to plug it in is a new one.

Dude.

I've forgot to close my car door before.
I've forgot to take my keys out of the front door.

My head space doesn't have space for the mundane... such as connecting a car to a charger.

Of course, I'd probably learn a lesson the first few times and then start doing it out of habit.

You don't 'remember to charge it at night'. Just plug in when you get home. Every time. It's really not that hard.

I don't think its anything like the issue he's making it but its amusing to see the typical response here. Of course you can forget - like most things. Who here has never forgotten to charge their phone and started the day with 15% battery as a result?

17,000 miles my average is 3.3p a mile to drive around in a performance car that fits all the kids and rarely have to stop for energy.

You are getting dragged into the cost too much on a worse case maths rather than true ownership experience.

Currently there is a spike in energy cost. I’m fortunate to be able to weather that rather than wait for my house to be bombed and escape my country. So things could be worse.

Me loads. EV once. Still had enough for the day as it’s just a topping up exercise.

Note: user experience has been used in the above example rather than predictions:p

EDIT: balls this is still the petrol thread, apols. Still I’m sure plenty of us have woke up in the morning forgetting we don’t have enough fuel to get to work and then annoyed you have to stop for fuel.
