Fuel up/down again

Our household runs an 05 Fabia 1.9TDI. Just coming upto 130,000 miles and the engine itself hasn't had any repair work done since new bar the scheduled servicing.

It's a solid unit, but very unrewarding to drive.

As our taxi driving regular 233 will undoubtedly confirm, private use is very different to taxi use.

I think the issue with the lower powered diesel engines is that, whilst they can be very economical at a steady cruising speed, when in stop-start traffic with lots of acceleration, they're actually underpowered and end up working far harder than a larger engine would and use more fuel. Even putting reliability issues aside, when used in a taxi application I can believe you'd be far better off fuel-wise with a larger engine.

My 04 Fabia VRS is close to 100k now - perfect reliability here from the 130PD 1.9TDI.

108.9p at Esso on Newport Road, Cardiff, yesterday.

Edit: Gas is 57.7p at the moment in Asda, the last tank cost me 21.7p per mile in a 2005 4.4 RR Vogue.

Paying too much for gas, I'm paying 48p atm. Car must be extremely inefficient too, I'm about 11p pm and that's doing 20mpg!

Just filled up in the last hour at Asda for 109.7, if I had known I would have waited till tomorrow. Yet on the other hand the tank was beyond empty. :o

Shell V-power was £1.17 when I topped the tank up today.

Failed miserably in hitting the magic £30 mark needed for their Lego promotion but the girl behind the counter still let me add some to my collection :)

112 per litre at a tesco/esso in Hertfordshire. I was quite shocked at how low it was. Shocked and very happy lol

The RR probably does about 11mpg around town, so it's about right.

Not that many places do gas around here, 57.7p is actually the consistently cheapest. One place lets you get it for 61p, decreasing by 1p for every fill until 10p off but it's the other side of Cardiff so not worth it.

I also saw 108.8p west of Haverfordwest today at an Esso just off the A40.

You'll find by far the cheapest places to buy autogas are not petrol filling stations, around here the cheapest place to my knowledge is countrywide farm stores who have a 24/7 pump which works on account :)

I paid £0.38/litre for LPG in Poland this week. Doing 250 miles for less than £13 put a different kind of smile on my face compared to paying ~£50 for the same type of journey in my M135i.
