Full EV Woes!

China released 11.4 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2022.

More than two centuries ago, the United Kingdom become the first country in the world to industrialize. Since then, it has released more than 78 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the atmosphere

So when China actually gives a damn about their output I will care, until then nope, do not care. China release one seventh of what the UK produces with all co2 emissions not just cars in its 200+ year history - all in 1 year for China.

I sympathise with the OP but what this also highlights is why anyone would make such an expensive purchase without some basic research. A very quick google of "real range of Mokka Electric" brought me to EVDB and showed winter motorway range to be 110 miles. I have also set a minimum limit of 200 winter and 250 summer miles, which most decent (and relatively cheap) EVs should do.
To be fair though, was that information such common knowledge 2.5 years ago? Or has it been populated by people such as the OP who have learnt the hard way that the quoted range is a work of fiction?

I don't think it's fair to sit here in 2024 saying, well everyone knows that, when the purchase decision was made back in 2021.

I for one am certainly more aware of the difference between quoted range and the reality of a cold motorway trip now than I was back then.

The guys stating that I should have researched, well at the time there wasn't the available info that is around now, so actually there was no real way to research back then.

So what you are saying is everybody in the motors forum who drives a performance car that is petrol is a heathen and a Daily Mail reader/writer? Come off it, you seriously expect that I take your comments serious now. Anybody who drives a high emissions car should stop and consider the environment according to your idealogy then which is insane.
That’s utterly different to what I wrote. Same as I said this post really should be called Sports car woes!

I think you were looking for an echo chamber and didn’t get it.

The guys stating that I should have researched, well at the time there wasn't the available info that is around now, so actually there was no real way to research back then.

So why did you go ahead and get it, when purchasing you need to be well informed of what you’re getting.

The "I can have 500/600/700/800 miles of range in 5 mins" is only a benefit if you actually need that amount range in one day or trip. Who needs this amount of daily range on a regular basis?

I generally find range is bladder size limited, not fuel or battery size limited.
I (many EV's) can get an additional 200 miles of range in 20mins - which is enough distance before I/we (family) need to stop again.
Not entirely. It's also extremely useful if you plan to do a long trip with stops where charging isn't available.

My wife isn't a great fan of long car journeys. We would break up every holiday travelling day with National Trust visits or picking a random market town to have a bit of lunch. A much nicer travelling experience than hopping from Welcome Break to Moto.

But thats what I'm trying to say, 98% of people seem to not care about the "problem" as you call it. Especially people in this motors section of the forum. I can list off a list of people easily who all have numerous cars in their garage which are far more "damaging" with their co2 levels even above my car. The problem is apparent that too many people just don't care vs the minority of people who do care enough to be a Greta.

Honestly I'm being a sheep and following the 98% of what I see which is people who just don't care enough to change their own ways. I've already said it's a selfish mentality and I have said I don't care because the other sheep also do not care either. It is what it is.
Sorry where were you flying to from Heathrow?

This is a big plus for me. I do a lot of short journeys so my current ICE will be emitting far more CO2 than the book figure, all past houses and local shops etc. Very much looking forward to not having tailpipe emissions again!

Before the "but the grid still emits CO2" brigade comes in:
  • Average car in the UK emits 160gCO2/km.
  • Average grid emissions is 220g/kWh
  • Average EV economy is 5.44km/kWh

...so 220/5.44 is 40gCO2/km for EVs, on average. If the grid is a lot cleaner, such as the current forecast of 82g/kWh on Saturday, that comes down to 15gCO2/km, less than a tenth of the emissions of an average ICE car.

As you can imagine, this figure actually becomes even more exaggerated comparing town driving, where ICE will be less efficient (pumping out more CO2) and EVs shine - I regularly saw over 4.5mi/kWh (sometimes even over 5) when my driving was focussed around town. Use that figure, and an average grid day means CO2 emissions of 30gCO2/km, or just over 11gCO2/km on a better grid day.

Average grid emissions is pushed higher because there is more fossil energy used in the day to meet the higher demand.
During the night, when most EV owners are charging the energy mix is more renwable than fossil energy, and thus the C02 levels much lower.

This is typical - green is wind, brown is s Gas

Yes, it was available back in 2021 because EVDB was instrumental in my EV purchasing decisions since 2019 when I began researching. It has always been updated with existing and upcoming EVs and the Mokka-E was no exception.

to be completely honest whilst it is true everyone knows quoted mpg are always a fantasy as is wltp range... I do think it's fair to say that for EVs on a motorway in winter the effect is really pronounced , more than in an ice.

and I think it's also fair point that 2.5 years ago there were less resources.to find this stuff out than now. I would also say the massive conclusion has to be EVDB needs way more exposure and we should all promote it when anyone is asking about EVs.

It doesn't help that our media is completely untrustworthy mostly that is anti EV FUD but equally it is also probably true that pro EV stuff may gloss over genuine issues .

either way ridiculing the op or the car they bought does not help anyone ..... hopefully I haven't come across as doing that but if I did it wasn't my intention. imo OPs car there is nothing wrong with it but it does need more organisation than what other cars would need esp in winter.

i do know of a few people (slightly mad perhaps) who have traversed the whole of the UK in a version 1 nissan leaf. I would not fancy it myself mind you

Ok, but the Mokka e was released in 2021. I don't think it's fair to assume the database was instantly populated with data from day one so even if the OP had looked in there the data would have been minimal at best. I mean, if EV range is so temperature dependent then surely you need at least the peaks of summer and depths of winter recorded to get a decent data set?

This myth that the EV info wasn’t available 2.5 years ago needs to die. EVDB and many other sources such as EV forums have been a thing for much longer than 2.5 years. In fact the OCUK EV thread is almost 6 years old. I used it and EVDB for research back in 2019 and it had pretty much every EV and upcoming EV listed.

Bjorn Nyland had Mokka-e range test since mid 2021 along with predicted winter range.

I don’t mean to be a dick but there really is no excuse for not doing research and even less for claiming it didn’t exist.

you missed my edit. yes it existed. I knew of it but then I have been watching fully charged since episode 1. but existing and being commonly known about are not the same thing. it is an absolutely amazing resource, is very accurate (and anyone throwing doubt on it's accuracy really need to do more homework imo)

EVDB was giving the EX30 predicted range numbers for months. Same with the MG4 and years ago for the Audi E-Tron before it was released. They also revise numbers when more data is made available.

Hence that word I mentioned earlier… research. You go looking for the actual info.

There are Mokka-E owner forums on Speak EV that go back to April 2021 and range is a topic on quite a number of the threads. EVs having much lower winter range has been a thing since EV have been a thing. There was plenty of range info on the Mokka-e from practically the day it was released.

It's modelled data, not tested, they don't have to wait around for the right condition before adding a number

So the first time the car has annoyed you; by a mild inconvenience, is 2.5years into ownership where it did a better job than your sports car to take luggage across the Atlantic where on your return you thought it was best to lecture people with lots of cars (that can only be driven one at a time) about their CO2 because you don’t care about yours?

Ace story bro.

I think what you've experienced whilst rare, is certainly a downside to EV ownership (I'm not anti-EV by the way). I don't understand why people are retorting that 'how many ICE vehicles don't do their claimed MPG', obviously a lot of ICE vehicles have questionable MPG figures. The main point is, it's still considerably easier to re-fuel an ICE vehicle whilst out and about and away from home due to sheer number of stations/pumps.

When researching myself in 2021, it took 5 seconds of google before I came across the legend Bjorn Nyland.. he had many videos by that point of driving cars in winter and summer and at different speeds and highlighting the range issues.. This is what prompted me to get a 58kwh ID.3 and not the 45kwh.. not to mention I never have to figure out the answer to 'how many banana boxes can I fit in my car'..

Unless you have 'Yo.. Wassup' and "ni.ni.ni.niiiine' burnt into your brain from watching his videos you are just an EV noob..

:D
