Future of Olympic Stadium

I like how many people can actually see in the future and state that West Ham will be a championship team when the new stadium is opened.

I'm a hammers fan and I'm quite happy that we hopefully will have the Olympic stadium as firstly the club needed to move away from that ****hole Upton Park, secondly I'm glad Spurs didn't get it as Levy wanted to get somewhere cheap for the new stadium and not having to fork out hundreds of millions for a new one actually in based in North London. Tottenham is the name of the club and they should remain in their part of London.

I can fully understand why Gold & Sullivan opted for the Olympic Stadium - it's a sensible business decision that after naming rights and other factors, West Ham's debt will be reduced considerable. They will invest money in to new players during next season even if West Ham get relegated as they know they have to.

Also, the new Westfield Shopping Centre is right beside the stadium so on a Saturday women can go shopping, while men can go and watch the hammers :)

i hope they succeed in getting a legal guarantee that they will keep the track

that's the main reason they won

wouldn't put it past them to rip it out a few years down the line once they realise what a stupid mistake it was to keep it there in the first place

All I did was attempt to point out that DM's utter speculation had no grounding in historical accuracy, and there was therefore absolutely no guarantee that things would happen as he said they would.

Even though you want me to, I'm not going to play his game and mindlessly guess as to whether West Ham would come back up if they got relegated next year. Given that we cannot possibly know who they'd sell, who they'd buy, and who they'd get in to replace Cuddly Ol' Avram, how can I?
Except that he didn't say anything would happen, just that them being relegated isn't a foregone conclusion and he thought it wasn't likely for various reasons.

And I don't want anyone to do anything, because speculating (or 'wishing' as the good ol' Spuds faithful have been doing) on it is, of course, pointless. I was just trying to invite discussion over the pointless 'X will happen... just because!' contributions for the sake of my sanity.

Using your example West Ham will be selling their "3 bed house" which will pay for many years rent on a "6 bed house".

The sale of their 3 bed house won't even pay for half the refurbishment on the 6 bed house let alone cover the rent for many years :p

As long as they're in the PL then it won't be a problem. A few years out of it and they'll be in administration, bye bye debt and there's no way they'll be kicked out so a 60k stadium that they'll then get at a cheap rate on as no one else will want it and it'll cost us (tax payers) dearly.

Not quite, they will be selling their 3 bed house to try and clear some of the ever increasing 115 million pound debt they have, then move into a building which will put even more strain on their limited finances, thus increasing the rate at which they they acrue debt.:)

Spurs have come back with a revised design for their new stadium

I'm shocked that lessons were not learnt after the Millennium Dome, as in what the bloody hell will it be used for after the two weeks its going to be used.

What use is an 80k athletics stadium anyway? It's like building a 50k arena for the tiddlywinks world championship.

It's not that I don't respect athletics, I just believe that the notion that a super stadium for athletics is needed and that it will inspire children. It won't.

Its because the people who are involved in these things from the top, to the athletes themselves in most cases, simply dont live in the real world.
I went to a private school that focused on Rugby, but we did a **** load of cross country and cricket, and a little bit of football.

I was far, far better at Rugby than I ever was at Football, I could log a competative time in the 100 and 200 meters, and was quite good a cricket.
I wanted to play football more than all the other sports, because of no other reason than Rugby, Cricket, and sitting around all day to take part in 13 seconds of running are extremely boring, and football isnt.
That wouldnt of changed for me regardless of having a 80k wonder stadium to run in.
People take part in a sport for two reasons, the rewards at the end of it, or they love it.
Athletics offer neither, other than the idiotic MBEs and OBEs dished out like sweets to people who take part in these minority sports.
Very easy to be the best at a sport that nobody cares about, not so easy to be great at a sport that has millions of competators around the world.

People simply dont care about athletics in this country, are people really going to drive 2 to 3 hundred miles from all over the country to watch a gloryfied school sports day?

No.

its got smeg all to do with kids will want to try athletics more if we have a good stadium.

Its business, nothing more or less, one more huge Athletics stadium means winning bids to host the commonwealth games, international events, international football games, etc, etc, is increased. No world class 60k seater athletics stadium, certainly won't win a bid, have a stadium, might win a bid, win a bid, loads of new business.

60k seater stadium, means, more fans going to see West Ham, more fans buying food, buying train tickets, buying crap outside the stadium, etc, etc. Another venue that can hold big music events, and athletics, and you know football week in week out which will bring in a load of money.

When will people just get the simple fact that stadiums are BUSINESSES, good stadium, good business opportunities, be them sport, music, or anything else.

We have the Olympics, which will generate billions for the economy, we will then have a stadium, we either knock it down and waste it or have a club use it, pay a yearly fee for it, and keep it in good condition and run it for other things than football.

Yes a Football only stadium would be "better" for football, but HOW MUCH BETTER?

Seriously, thats the question how much better would a 80k seater stadium without a track be. Being an extra 10 metres away doesn't actually make the football better, or turn from a fantastic view to needing binoculars.

The simple argument as always is, why knock down an OKAY stadium for football to build a marginally better than okay stadium for football, when you can have both, for very little extra cost?

Remember, the UK already hold international, national, regional meets for athletics, some won't sell out a 60k seater stadium, some most certainly WILL, meaning the events that could get more people, for instance, seeing Usain Bolt running, WOULD generate more money and get more people in based in a London stadium with a larger capacity.

Big sporting events don't generate "billions for the economy". That's a total myth. Read "Why England Lose" by Simon Kuper & Stefan Szymanski for a good analysis of the numbers.

Remember that neither club intended to demolish the stadium completely and that both bids intended to use the stadium for non-football events.

Go to a match with a running track and find out for yourself. It's rubbish. Ask Bayern Munich fans.

I hope Spurs manage to get it in writing that they won't remove the running track, otherwise I can see it being ripped out as soon as the Olympics has died down.

He clearly doesn't understand that more seats = cheaper prices. If that's the case, and tickets are cheap, we will easily fill the stadium. The reason for our poor attendances is that £40 to see the team at the bottom of the table is too much for some.

..care to explain why instead of the school-boy insults?

Hmmm..seriously..anyone want to tell why I'm wrong?

Are we seriously thinking this stadium is going to get filled with West Ham supporters? Where are they coming from?!

Read above.

Mrs Brady and Mr Sullivan are reportedly eyeing up the idea of a running track at a cost of £10m.

At whoever said we'll be complaining in 5 years time..we're complaining now :p
