G80 specs finally confirmed! NOT old news!

Well the 7900GTXs were around the £450 mark when they launched, so I'd imagine something similar, especially as NVidia have a 3 month lead on ATi and they should give a huge performacnce boost over any thing ATi can offer right now.

Only time will tell though.

Well...no sli for me then...that's over 1500 euro + the cost of a new nvidia mobo + possibly a new psu....hmm..over 2000 euro to go g80 sli !!!

Whats new? Its always been like that with the top end new cards, for what.....3-4 years!

At everyone else, look we know its going to need a fair bit of power to run. Its been said already you don't need to keep ranting on about it. What more is there to say?

You will need a powerful PSU, but then if your willing to shell out £450 odd on a graphics card then you shouldn't be complaining about what you need to run it.

Its obvious really, enough of the playing dumb to it all! Its like some of you wake up every day, compeletly forget that the new cards will need a lot of power, and then realise it again as if its a big shock to the system.

For god sake grow up and be quiet about it, at least stop complaining constantly.

If nVidia were just lazy, like with the 5800Ultra, then we'd understand. But it looks like the "age of speed" is over as a few sites have called it, and you just need to get used to the fact that things are going to be different from now on.

Apologies for rant myself, but I can't see how most of you aren't looking forward to this, would you rather have nothing. Even if your not going to buy one then at least it will reduce prices for other cards you might like.

It is a good thing! ?

Gefore 4 Series - £399
Geforce FX - £380
Geforce 6 Series - £400
Geforce 7 Series - £430

Price of top end cards for each series, plucked outta me head so they might be wrong.

I am certain on the Geforce 4 and 7 though as I owned them both at launch.

A price difference of £31 (taking into account inflation also ;)....

Is hardly a big difference!

SLI is an option for people with plenty of cash, its not forced on you! Just like buying a Ferrari F355.

Anyway...

I just bought a Thermaltake 5.25" Purepower Power Express 250W SLI Dedicated Power Supply today :) Store I bought it in had only 1 left and they have a 30day moneyback guarantee. So if my Seasonic M12 700w is enough for G80 sli then at least I can return it. Cheaper then having to sell my Seasonic, and buy a Tagan 800w + psu. This also means I can split the load and hopefully my rig will be quieter.

By the way, I have noticed that the PSU expert (johhnyguru.com) thinks there is no way if a full rig needs 450w for 1 G80, that it can be nearly double that for sli. In fact he heard from Nvidia in the US that the requirments are much lower. When you think about it, we have had nothing confirmed. Except the story on Dailytech.

These guys should start doing these, been getting good reviews, and only about £25-£30, an absolute bargain if you ask me, saves you having to get a whole new PSU if it aint up to the job, these will easily power G80's etc... when i decide to upgrade ill be getting a one of these. :)

Gibbo posted a comment a while back saying he had a play with an FSP X3 Booster and he reckoned it was absolute toss !!

I read a couple of reviews of the X3 and while a bit more powerful then the Thermaltake (300w v 250w), at least 1 person complained of it not turning off with the rest of his rig. The Thermaltake looks like it has a connector to sych the psu's so should avoid this problem.

Looking at the specs though..it is designed with sli in mind with 2 pci-e cables, each one getting a dedicated 12v rail with a total max load of 21A and peak load of 25A. Will 21A be enough to handle a single G80 ?

To be honest its going to have to be some card. There are so many good deals on the current gen cards at the moment, it will be difficult to justifiably buy a card that is a little bit quicker but can do DX10 for twice the price of lets say a x1900XT or a 7900GTO.

I'm hoping the G80 as a single card solution beats the pants off of a 7950GX2, if that is the case, they will get my dough!! if not, I will wait for the 8950GX4 or whatever!!!

Most of us who have fairly decent spec PC's would be foolish to rush out and buy if the bump up in performance is not adequately substantial enough!!

I agree.

The rumoured RRP for this card is $650. Taking into account the VAT in the UK, ,this means the card should be around £410. Maybe £450 taking into account transport costs to the UK. However there is also the "gouge" factory, disguised of course as "suppply and demand" and I can't see OcUK charging any less then £500 for this card. It is interesting in that last time with the 7800GTX launch the US etailors were competing so much prices dropped, but in Europe only a few etailors got the European quota of these cards and prices were raised, sometimes to ridiculous levels. It would not surprise me if this card was sold for between £500 and £600.

All this talk of PSU's over 1000w is totally bizzare.
This countrys power cost is bad now, and its going to get higher. We need to be more responsible. Hardware developers shouldnt be constantly looking into faster all the time, they should be looking into more economical ways of doing the same thing. I know that wont happen though, as it doesnt pay to think fo the environment.

Rant over.

Does this card support HDR and AA? I mean they must have got that sorted by now at least.

So when they say x16aa on a single card. Does this mean you can use the x16 on new games or are you going to lag like hell with it turned on. Which just gives them something to boost about without it being worth a darn in high end games
