Gainward bring you a 512MB 7800 GT for AGP!!!!

ok solved that little issue the luddy fan cable was just tucked underneath the exhaust and not plugged in... now its running at 38C under load luckily my whole system is very cool otherwise I might have borked the card.

Sorry to cast doubt over one of these two new cards, but I have just received and installed the 7800gs+ (supposed to be a 7900gt in disguise, with 24 active pipes) and I'm a little suspicious that Gainward are trying to pull the wool over our eyes.

Performance wise, I was surprised to see only a modest gain of 100-200 points in 3dmark 05 when compared to it's very recent 20 pipe predecessor (the non-plus Bliss 7800gs). This increase seemes only to reflect the slight clock speed increase rather than a genuine 4 pipe advantage.

To confirm my suspicions, I down-clocked the Bliss 7800GS+ to the same speed as the Bliss 7800 (425/1250), and sure enough, both cards turn in a virtually identical score in 3dmark05.

I'm seriously doubful of the assertion that this card has 24 active pipes, and believe that it is actually a replica of the standard Bliss 7800, with a slightly higher clock speed, if I'm wrong, then something else is seriously awry, how do I check the number of active pipes on an Nvidia card? Any ideas/opinions??

That is rather worrying

Try RivaTuner - that should show the active number of pipes

Not sure then

Maybe there's something on Guru3D?

Sorry I can't be more help. You can find out by removing the heatsink but, of course, this isn't an option due to warranty concerns

The 7900GT should perform a little faster than a 7800GTX so there should be a definite difference of more than a few hundred points

Well, I've not been able to find any software which gives me a definitive answer, though honestly I don't think it's necessary, the benchmark figures speak for themselves, when clocked at identical speeds, both cards give identical results.

Going by what you say AJ, I have a 7800gtx card installed in a p4gd1 motherboard which has the exact same processor as my AGP system, for 3dmark 05, it turns in a result of 7400 compared to the 7800Gs+s 6846, I'd expect these scores to be much closer if the 24 pipe claim were to be true.

It seems there has been a slight breakdown in communications between Gainward and the retail channel.

It is possible that the CPU is the limiting factor in these tests and that the card is a G71 as Gainward say.

AStaley.

PS. Still waiting for mine to arrive after CityLink messed up the delivery.

Citylink really suck... they screwed up 4 of my deliveries they have trouble finding where I live despite having been there many times before... now if I ever purchase anything that has to be delivered by them I get it sent to my parents house, they seem to find that ok...

Can't believe that.

How is it possible that a 24 pipe 7800gtx scores 600 points more when combined with exactly the same CPU? I bet If i purchased a standard 7900gt and used it in the Asus p4gd1 I mentioned above, it would also comfortably outscore the 7800gs+, I note there is no mention of 24 pipes on Gainward's own website.

Citylink are the worst courier service bar none and this is backed up by hundreds of user feedback including many of my friends... God knows why OCUK, a multi-million pound company, use them. Pee-poor.

I'm quite surprised, I personally suffered far worse under Amtrak. And Business Post's Saturday service seemed only to operate if you actually picked up the phone on Saturday morning and demanded that your parcel be delivered! Remember one weekend, I kept ringing various regonal depots until somebody answered and had to give me a number normally reserved for their drivers as nobody at my local depot ever picked up the phone.

Citylink seem the prevalent force amongst e-tailers these days, I've found them pretty reliable, though in fairness, I think most of the drivers know my house pretty well by now!

In my view, the worst of all is Parcelforce, especially for international imports, I occasionally order stuff from the U.S. and have it sent via USPS, everything runs so smoothly.....until my goods hit the U.K. at which point they are passed over to Parcelforce. A recent expierence involved a two week delay and doznes of phone calls to deserted wharehouses.

The excuse they finally came up with was:

"We were unable to send you a letter informing of customs charges and handling fees as we had run out of paper!!"

So, a two week delay, and I owe them for the privilege.

Apologies for going off topic.
