Gainward bring you a 512MB 7800 GT for AGP!!!!

My 7800gs turned up this morning & I've been having some fun:)
My system isn't as uber as most (all!) of yours but I'm very happy with the image quality & performance.
I've only run 3d Mark 03 so far but the score isn't bad for my setup at all:)

Just fitted my newly arrived AGP 7800GT + and i'm getting:

3DMark06 - 4532
3DMark05 - 8714
That's running at 500/1476 with bog standard nVidia 84.21 (normal PC boot, no tweaking or changes in control panel) on a x2 3800 running at 2.4ghz / 2GB.

Very pleased, this rig will see me through 'till early next year when I do a complete change to AM2/Conroe or whatever, DDR2 and DX10 GPU :D

Following on from my dead Leadtek 6800GT experience, I've just bought one of these!

So hopefully me: :D

And bank manager:

:)

Is it really quiet? My setup is optimised for nice and quiet, only my harddrives make a bit of noise.

what sort of power do these need? would i get away with a hiper 350watt psu? also id sell my agpn 6800gt to fund the new card, what sort of price do you think id get for my gt? cheers guys

Been running my 7800gt no probs, only currently got 1x DVD-RW , 250GB sata HD, ( did also run my 160GB pata with this, no probs ) does depend on how many other bits of hardware you have connected

It is Very quiet

My rig is also set up to be as silent as possible ( antec sonata 1 piano black with foam padding, zalman cpu cooler )
This replaced a 9800pro with heat pipe and large zalman fan and in comparison the 7800gt is maybe even quieter, but I can`t hear it :D

I received my Gainward BLISS GeForce 7800 GS SILENT 512MB AGP card today and I am impressed with it. Compared to the X800XT I get an extra 40fps on Counterstrike:Source stress test, and turning on Transparent SS, High Quality image settings and upping the AF from 8x to 16x makes no real dent in it at all.
I have overclocked it to 460/1400 without any issues or increase in temps as well.
Talking of temps, it runs hotter than I was expecting. In 2D it is 44° and upto 70° under load. Hopefully these will drop when it beds in. I know my case is cool because my Arctic Cooler equipped X800XT ran at 32°/48°.
Coming back to nVidia from several generations of ATI cards I can say that there is definately a noticable drop in 2D image quality. It's not huge but bold black text is slightly more ragged. I can live with that though.

the diff between the 6800gs and the 7800gt edition

?

btw, I have a hiper 350watt psu which has 22amps on the +12v line, it is also 400watts under peak load and my voltages are always above their respected values ie: 12v @ 12.53 / 5v @ 5.32 etc

Reckon my psu will be enough to power the 7800GS Gainward (7800GT) ?

I have 2x sata150 hdds, 1xdvdrw, 1xdvdrom, 4pci cards and a 3200+ barton with 3 USB devices and sometimes a firewire camera connected.

eXtreme pSU calc says the lot inc a 7800GT will take about 312watts of psu power to run so I am within the margins but just want to make sure if anyone else has it similar with this card!

Btw, here's the ratings:

Oh also, can someone measure the length of the card (inc fan unit) and the depth it takes once seated in the AGP bay? just want to make sure my case has enough room! if its a similar length/width to my old leadtek 6800GT which had the HUGE copper cooler unit then it should be fine, if it's longer my sata hdds cables may get in the way

Same here, had the same 'chunky' leadtek and would like to know the answer to this. Can't believe it could be much bigger though!

Some of the user reviews I read on other shopping sites say the card is long and HUGE ! - but the weirdos don't mention how long it is precisely :/

By looking at the cooler and card itself it "looks" like it's longer than the 6800GT though and it has 2x power connectors so needs more room anyway.

I may just end up getting the BFG OC 7800GS and buying 2GB of dual channel corsair twinx memory instead (totals @ £345 free del) and should provide the relevant boost I need whilst saving me an extra pci slot of space and some longevity since I probably will switch to pci-express early next year anyway but can keep the memory of course :p

I guess this way it would also mean a new psu would not be needed, a 7800 card needs less power than a 6800gt anyway so an added bonus!

Balth, you have your AGP apeture set to 512Mb in BIOS? Have you ever fiddled with the AGP latency? I'm sure you know about these, and I have no idea if they would have an effect, but I thought I'd mention them just in case.

BTW, my 7800GS+ is working just fine. I've not bothered with any benchmarks except to note that everything I used to play at 1280x960, quality, 2XQ AA, 2X AF, is now playing BETTER at 1600x1200, high quality, 4X AA, 8X AF. I upgraded form a BFG 6800GT 256Mb OC. And, I've not yet overclocked the GS+. :)

Hello guys new to the forums and recently bought a 7800GS+ and was dissapointed by my 05 scores my rig is:-
P4 3.5ghz 478 prescot
P4P800e-d
7800GS+
2GB of generic ram running at 190mhz

I soon found out that 05 wasnt good enought to test my new card due to my old 3.5ghz P4, using 06 and comparing my scores the 7800GS+ is on par with similar clocked 7900GTs.

If paying more for the 7800GS+ over the gainward 7800GS im not sure.
Balth can you please do some 06 benchs on your cards please :) ?

From the enquirer heres a 7900GT at 550/1580 and a FX57@2800mhz and scored 4723.
My GS+ at 550/1500 and a crappy [email protected] scored 4649 which pretty good as it has lower ram clock and a much slower CPU, and i didnt do anything special just set the clock speeds.

Also to help clear up if the GS is 24 pipe i have been informed if you just do the multi fill rate test in 05, you multiply the core speed by the number of pipes i.e 450x24= 10800 approx.
A 20 pipe card at 450x20=9000
My GS+ has the correct fill rate scoring 10700@450mhz and 11700@500mhz.
So in theory the GS+ to make use of the 4 extra needs to be clocked higher

;) To whom it may concern.

I increased the resolution to 1600x1200 and ran 3dmark 05 on the two cards once more:

7800gs+ - 5879

7800gs - 5676

I also ran tests with 8x AA and 16x AS on both cards (these at 1024x768)

7800gs+ - 6081

7800gs - 5969

Once again, these are average scores taken from three separate cycles, and for the first time, I observed a small but significant advantage for the 7800gs+.

It would appear then, as has been suggested, that there is some kind of "bottleneck" that is hindering the GS+s capacity at lower resolutions, however, increasing my CPU's speed from 3.4ghz to 3.73ghz did not appear to widen the performance gap, when bearing in mind that most here believe the CPU to be the main culprit, this surprised me.

I shall run 3dmark 06 tests and see if they yield anything further.

Jenks, according to your theory, my fill rate figures don't quite stack up as expected, the GS+ achieved a score of only 11339 with the core at 500, though I suppose this is in the right ballpark, haven't had time to test the GS yet though.

Update for Falken: The GS+ fill rate at stock was 10534

By the way, don't be disrespectful to your poor old P4!! Nearly matching an fx57 with a full blown 7900gt at a higher clock speed is pretty good going, even when considering that intel chips have always been a potent force in 3dmark ;)

Best wishes to all.

Please test the GS fillrate score and post back (with your mhz), that will be very interesting :)

Also, what was your gs+ fillrate score at stock speed?

Hi Mrk,

I think for the most part you will be fine. However, I have one of these 7800Gs (GT -AGP) Gainwards, and when I run GRAW, it's fine but then slows right down, on reboot, I get an error saying there is not enough power to the Nvidia card - and it's being taken down in performance to increase stability. I think these cards *really* need dual 12v rails to run optimally as they are really PCi E cards in disguise. I'm currently using a Zalman 400W PSU - and I'll be upgrading to the dual 12v rail 460W very soon. So, yeag it'll work most part, but with more next gen content and these 'post processing effects' - you'd be better off with a dual 12V rail PSU.

Cheers.

Balth i was pretty supprised that my 06 score was the same as my cpu struggles to get a 1000 cpu points overclocked compared to the Fx57s 1800 cpu points.
Im just thinking for the extra 4 extra pipes to make any difference the core speed has to be raised, i would guess in theory if both the GS and GS+ where running at 550mhz the GS+ performance gap would increase more.
From your hi res scores it seems the GS+ stretchs its leg some, gaming benchmarks between the two at 1600x1200 would be nice, also some 3dmark 06 comparisons.
And it will be interesting to find out the fill rate of your GS.
