Okay just had time to get my new 7800GS+ in to my sons box, ive done some benchmarking, comparing this card 7800GS+ @ stock to his original X850XTPE

ATI X850XTPE

3D Mark 03 - 14229
3D Mark 05 - 6688

7800GS+ (stock)

3D Mark 03 - 17547
3D Mark 05 - 7889

That’s a pretty good increase I reckon ;) 18% on 3D Mark 05 and 23% on 3D Mark 03. I will overclock it and report back later…..

nice scores mate what else is in your system?

"I get an error saying there is not enough power to the Nvidia card" I've been getting the same problem when overclocking my gainward 7800gs, never at stock and i find its game related.Condemned has this problem where oblivian does not.Reminds me of my old 6800 card which caused games to freeze when overclocking on some games like fear and hl2 but not quake 4 or battlefield2.Is it fastwrites on agp thats causing this.Have it disabled but i know people on pcie who never have this problem.

I sorted out my Nvidia sentinel insufficient power warning, after getting an RMA number from Andy in support :o (I'll speak to them Monday)
It's nothing to do with hardware or PSU's as I tried my old one again, it's software related.
First I uninstalled & completely cleaned all drivers off (driver cleaner), then resolved any issues left with CCleaner. Re-installed (84.43) & added coolbits.
I'd done that a few (many) times before but what I've done differently now is untick the 'notify when GPU core temp. exceeds thresholds' box in driver settings.
As I was only getting the slowdown & warning after running the system for 1/2hr or so I initially thought heat might be a problem but temps. were (still are) constantly 45-60c. Maybe there's some sort of confusion/conflict between the temp & power sensors, a guess as I don't even know if they exist or drivers & bios. All seems fine now though & I know of others have the same problem so it might be worth trying:)

Would someone be kind enough to check my 3d scores for my system as I'm not really sure what's what:) - '03 & '05

Your 03 score is quite nice, I only get a shade over 12,000 with a 3200+ barton and a 6800GT but your 05 score is much closer to mine (I get 5,600)

For the power of your gfx compared to my 6800GT I'd expect you to get more in 05 since it is a more GPU biased benchmark!

I've decided to get the XFX 7800GS Extreme edition which clocks to 480/1450 (24/7usage) and expect to get around 6k in 05 and 14k in 03 - will see though :p

I really do wish the Gainward one was single slot as I really do need the pci slot space (using 4x pci cards atm)

'05 is really low, I managed to hit 8.3k in 05. Check to see if your graphics are on "High Performance" when doing the '05 benchy. Or there isn't any driver conflict, because that really does seem low.

That seems about ballpark to me :) , I`ve got a P4 3.2 and with my non + 7800GT got 6581 in 05 and 3355 in 06.
The AMDs seem to be scoring higher in this, but you could always have a go at 3d mark orb to see how it compares to the same cpu & gpu

anyone know if these cards have dual link? im thinking of getting a dell 30" lcd screen but not sure if i need to fully upgrade my pc first or not
Mmmmmmmmm, dell 30 incher

Not sure if this card at native screen rez will be uber enough to run games at any reasonable setting, but non game stuff will be fine.
For games at decent settings you will currently need crossfire or dual / quad sli

I`m sure all 7800 series cards are dual link including this one

yeah deffo not looking to play games on it, just apps etc. atm cant be bothered upgrading to pci-e based shuttle as id rather wait for the next amd and intel chips.

more thing does the 7800gt ver have dual dvi sockets or one vga and one dvi?

The gainward 7800GS is definatly the version to go for its costs slighty more but has 512mb of Vram and 4 more pipes then the rest and also the cooler is great.
From doing 06 benchmark comparisons i have found that my 7800GS+ performs the same as a 7900GT clock for clock, i do think 06 is the only way to compare new 3d cards.
Im very happy with the card every game i have played so far is at max settings 1600x1200 4xAA and 16xAF, i do wish i went for the non + thought and save me some cash.

Memory Clock off by 50%

 First the good news!!...THE CARD HAS ARRIVED ON AMERICA's SHORES>>>

IT WORKS!!...now for some interesting news...

for some reason using various reporting software...it shows as
as default of 450 Core and 625 memory (shouldn't that be 1350)...

when i oc it to 501 and 700 (shouldn't that be 1400) to run 3dMark06 =
3977 (highest score for AMD XP3200 at 7800 GS) - i think i can get to 4000!!..

but if the Memory setting is really 2x what is being reported (it would figure since i am getting quite good benchmark scores) why is it reporting 50% of the true value?..

any ideas??

The memory is DDR memory so the effective clock speed is twice the actual clock speed

The memory is advertised using the effective clock speed - you're reading and adjusting the actual clock speed there

It's just like the fact that PC3200 memory is rated at DDR400 but runs at 200MHz

AHA!!

AHA!!...so the other video cards that i have had were not using this type of memory?..i.e 7800 GS EVGA 256 OC, 6800 OC BFG, and a 5950 PNY!...

AND, to the sound of cannons!!

3d Mark 06 at 4022!!!....

1989/1972/784

at 510/710 ok, ok 510/1420...

highest i got on the EVGA was 3654 and 2335 on the 6800....

not bad for an old XP3200 operating at stock (not o/c speed)... :D :D

Yes they are

All video cards for some time now have been using DDR memory (since the Radeon SDR/GF2 MX days)

As it's DDR memory it can be referred to as the effective memory speed or the actual memory speed

It's likely that you're just seeing the effective memory speed on the other cards mentioned
