Game Activation Uproar

Personally, I'd say it's not. I think it's a basic consumer right to be able to sell on (pretty much) anything you legally own. Capitalism won out and the right to make money from junk comes with it. :p

True.

However from a developers point of view a game being pirated and a game being sold secondhand make them the same money.

Hang on, so if its tied to your machine, then surely you can format, re-install it as many times as you like.
From what I've read on here, as confused as it is, you have to perform an uninstall to reclaim an activation. If you format or lose a disk/mobo without uninstalling you potentially lose an activation, and have to phone them once you've used both.

I dread to think what the world would be like if it was made to suit the business model of a software publisher. :p

Without reading through this whole thread can someone please just state the facts about this? Can Bioshock only be installed twice?

I hate to quote myself, but I think it's like this...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong as it's confusing.

Probably, as long as your hardware remains the same when you reformat.. but if someone installs, finds the game runs crap, upgrades GU to play it better, and reinstalls it, then thats their 2 chances gone..if they upgrade again then they wont be able to activate again...thats what i got from it anyways..

Someone told me Vista was like this in the way you cant change hardware and reinstall more than a few times..not sure if thats true like

For the people saying "get it on steam" do your research because I've been on the steam forums and there is an uproar there also as the activation process is the same. Halo 2 was the same - its insane, that's why I don't buy PC games or avoid it at all costs. I formatted over the install twice so I cant play the game full stop.

The only PC games I will buy are the ones which have achievements

No you cant - you have to un-install. Like I said I have Halo 2 and have formatted twice and cant play the game now full stop which is an absolute blody rip-off for £30!

Nope, they scrapped that. Retail vista can be installed as many times as you wish with whatever hardware you want (Obviously only on one pc at a time). OEM vista is the same however you cannot 'upgrade' the motherboard unless its an RMA replacement.

Oh yes I do remember reading something about that. Microsoft needed to though because of the sheer price of Vista for the amount of installs you could use it for.

Just had the developers of my Vectra on the phone , apparently my 2nd hand car has to be crushed & I've got to buy a brand new one  .

:p :D

This whole uninstall lark is a joke, th eonly time I reinstall my games is after something (usually me) screws my OS up to the point of non booting, how am I supposed to uninstall then? Also, if I do decide to format my drive and reinstall I'm now forced to not only spend time backing up my data (not really an issue) but waste additional time uninstalling games just so I don't 'over activate' them, daft, just daft.

Having this limitation on steam is even worse, the whole point of steam is that you can play your games on any capable pc anywhere in the world, if that is no longer the case then steam is pointless as anything but a delivery system.

Half Life 2 retail was as bad, not only did it require steam but also required the rom in the drive, I know I sent mine back in disgust.

Wow this is news to me which is quite a surprise, where the heck did this little piece of bs come from? what a joke, this is a disgusting practice that needs to be made very clear to them that the people don't accept this, talk about extreme and restrictive measures all for the sake of a little game, how pathetic!
