House of the Dragon's showrunners have also sought to right some of Game of Thrones' original sins—namely, its lack of diversity and its shoddy treatment of female characters. House of the Dragon has reimagined the powerful Velaryon family as wealthy Black rulers marked by flowing silver dreadlocks. According to Condal, Martin toyed with this depiction of the Velaryons while writing the series, envisioning them as Black conquerors who came to Westeros from the far west. "It was very important for Miguel and I to create a show that was not another bunch of white people on the screen," Condal said. "We wanted to find a way to put diversity in the show, but we didn't want to do it in a way that felt like it was an afterthought or, worse, tokenism."

For the first time ever, female characters are at the forefront of the show, and the story plans to confront gender inequities head-on. In the trailer, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen turns to her niece, Princess Rhaenyra, and says, "Men would sooner put the realm to the torch than see a woman ascend the Iron Throne." Eve Best, who plays Princess Rhaenys, said of the show, "Effectively, it's about the disillusionment of the patriarchy, of this system that has been going and going for hundreds and hundreds of years."

Pretty sure it is tokenism to race swap a race and then advertise your diversity quota as being met. How can it not be

Guess we'll see how senile this king is that he dies refusing to clarify his succession thus leaving a civil war as his legacy where the primary matter to the nobles is gender and not which one supports their cause.

Not everyone is a Named Character that gets close ups. Maybe it'll look better in its natural habitat of being out of focus some distance away and after some colour grading.

It doesn't matter what tricks of the trade they pull to disguise the shoddy costumes on the show, that official marketing image for the show is in focus and crystal clear.

Yeah all I see from that is just a bunch of modern day buzzwords from hack writers. There's also the problem that the series this is based on is terrible, it's self indulgent crap from Martin. Hell it's almost like hbo told him what they wanted and he's worked from there.

Of course it is Tokensim, they are using race as a commodity to advertise how vituous they are, amazon's bad fan-fic is doing exactly the same.

Common themes ermerging with these ruined fantasy shows - they're all the same. WOT, The Witcher, ROP, and HOD.

Terrible writing, wokism to a larger or esser extent, smash the patriarchy, race swaps, white man bad, male carachters pushed to background or sidelined altogether, mary-sue's cheap and looking costumes and armour.

It's almost like they're all made to a pre-determined checklist...

The so-called "Golden age of Fantasy on TV" has turned into 4 top-class seasons of GOT, a couple of ok seasons, then an epic disaster - and the rest of what ha sbeen produced is pretty much garbage.

Every show that prioritises diversity and strong women that invariably turns out **** because they've prioritised said check marks over story you mean?

Bad writing is bad writing, those are legitimate criticisms. Diversity makes no difference to the quality of a show or its writing. Its just pointless raging to no effect from those who refuse to move with the times. Tiresome bigotry in thread after thread.

And yet there seems to be a massive correlation between the 2, shows that prioritise 'woke' aspects are all **** - name me one good one. Whereas shows that don't and concentrate on telling a good story have all been great to watch, even ones with shock horror, minority characters and women leads.

You have just made up the correlation between them imo or it's just coincidental.

Time and again the show is bad because it's badly made/written, the diversity is incidental.

Recently, We Own This City. Diverse cast and is fantastic.
If a show is poorly written, it doesn't matter who is cast if they have rubbish to read from. Having a diverse cast or strong women/weak men, doesn't mean a show is automatically going to be garbage. But if the writing is garbage no actor/actress is going to be capable of saving it.

The point is that the showrunners didn't say garbage like:

But yes, We own this city is good, suffers from being by the same guys that did the wire tho, so draws unfair comparisons
.

They should've just did it without making a big deal about it. Sure, some people would still cry about it but then it wouldn't give the impression that it's all about inclusion.

Still, inclusion shouldn't be viewed as some bad thing. Bad writing should always be called out though.
