US: Game of Thrones Season 3 (contains spoilers)

I am sure it all comes together in the end but there needs to be something in the middle to happen to keep viewers interested. As a TV series, each season should be relatively self contained and there should be some mini arc within it.

That's all fine if you're writing an original series, but not really possible when using a HUGE 7 book series as the source material. They weren't written episodically, so the story can't really be formed that way either. You just can't have self contained episodes.

You can't create and shoe-horn in mini story arcs either, because they wont fit, or they'll distract from the main events of the show.
The books are all about a building story, with interlaced and layered characters which develop to some major milestone events along the way. It's about the progression of the characters and the signs and portents of events to come as well as what is immediately happening.

20+ characters is a very big amount to keep track of, I do understand. I also wish they would be a little more focussed rather than jumping around so much, they seemed to do a better job of balancing it in the previous series imo.

For me the conversations involving Varys, Olenna Tyrell and Tyrion this series have just been superb.

Then they need to adapt it so at least it feels that way.

Audience like a beginning, middle and an end. Although we are not stupid and do realise some build up is required but asking us to wait 4 more years of this rubbish before the action in season 7 is absurd!

Thats going to be down to personal preference.

Some will be quite content to watch the build up, others won't be prepared to wait and will tail off.

You can't please everyone and I personally love the way its going at the moment.

I guess the "end" if you like is who becomes finally King, without anybody claiming it as theirs and willing to go to war over it.

But thats a long way off yet.

Yup, personally I prefer a story arc over the course of a series rather than a set of self contained episodes which have no relation to each other, probably partly why I like Babylon 5 so much more than Star Trek

It doesn't :p

... still two books to be written (I think), but an awful lot to tie up and at this rate either Martin will be dead before he finishes or all the actors will be 20 years older before they can film the final series.

George really needs to forget about the show and focus on the books. I am starting to worry about the future of the books after seeing the series tbh....A few characters are set up in the show in a way that suggests how their characters will progress in the books imo, and I don't like that.

WHAT?!

You mean if he doesn't finish them in the next 4-5 years, this TV series could just stop?

The Tv show writers already know roughly how it will end, so they will just continue on....half of the stuff in the show is made up anyway. Tbh, the show and the books are two different entities, and I imagine they will just do whatever they want and finish it anyway.

PS. I think there will be 3 more books;)...if George can ignore the show.
