US: Game of Thrones Season 3 (watch-a-long thread {no spoilers})

The hype over this episode..... Lol

It was a good episode but calm down people. A 10 minute zombie battle where john and the crew return back to their valet parked boat does not make it the best thing on television ever. It was typical game of thrones, bore you to tears for a whole season then put a standard bit of action in and people instantly forget all about the 8 or so hours they had to watch to see that 10 minutes of fighting.

Don't get me wrong, I like game of thrones and this episode in particular was good, but the hype is unreal....9.9 on imdb, people quoting saying best bit of television in history just distort perception of the show so much.

Flame jacket engaged! :p

I actually agree with you to be honest. I enjoyed the episode and did find the battle exciting but people are getting a bit carried away (just imo).

That said, seeing the White Walkers more was pretty awesome. Straying from book territory is always interesting.

IMO I have never seen a better bit of TV. Not just the, again in my opinion, the epic battle that was more interesting than any of the Lord of the Rings movies, but the rest of the show was impeccable. From the start the scenes with Tyrion and Daenerys were incredibly well written and acted, the same with Reek and Sansa, John and the wildlings(Not just the battle) Sam and Olly, all great scenes. The convergence of story lines in places were great and the sheer amount the story has moved on in one single episode is great. Winter is coming and so is the Zombie army!

I personally have not watched any film or tv show in recent times that has kept me that enthralled throughout the episode and the awe of the end battle was so well done it rivals, and in a lot of ways, beats the best blockbuster movies.

I have not had a problem with any episode, even the one before last, that had terrible viewing figures. Its all part of the story. If it was just battle after battle every single week then people would generally switch off, even Spartacus had a lot of backstory and subplots to alleviate that. Its that balance that brings out the best in tv shows and that episode had it in abundance.

9.9/10... well I would probably agree with that.

I'm with you on this one. After reading the hype I was expecting the attack on Winterfell and some long overdue retribution, instead it was as you said which was OK but still a bit lukewarm.

Also, now the White Walkers have become personified into individuals they really have lost something. Nowhere near as spooky. They were supposed to be some mythical race of monsters, now they've got clothes, horses and armour etc. Unless of course this is a part of the story yet to be revealed.

I'm hoping the last 2 episodes are worth the wait, because this season has been mostly back story and filler. What little nuggets of goodness there has been have been delivered over a couple of episiodes at a glacial pace.

I thought that it was quite obvious that there were at least 3 ranks of White Walkers. The ones that command (On horseback) the one that John fought was more of a lieutenant/berserker and then the undead foot soldiers/infantry/fodder. It certainly looks like the higher ranks are actually some sort of different race that commands the dead rather than actually being one of them. Does that reduce the mysticism? In my opinion it adds to it as before they were actually this mythical race of monsters that only had the purpose of killing when the winter came and raising the dead. Now we have a strategic force of them that has a hierarchy command structure and not some mindless horde.

I would have thought that the reason why they had clothes, armour and weapons was because they were raised from the dead and I would say that's what they died in/with. The Commanders and Lieutenant are clothed differently and as you say ride horses (Well horse zombies lol) as they are higher rank and possibly different race to the undead army.

I have a suspicious feeling the wildling army will bring the supplies and fight with them.

Red woman will claim it was the lord of light but it would have happened anyway, or something similar.

I doubt there's going to be any real sign the lord of flight had anything to do with it unless the red woman starts raising the dead or something

Jon did send someone else in the books, yeah.

Stannis' story in the TV is further along than in the books so we don't know what will happen. However, it wouldn't surprise me if it was leading up to that as they made a big deal about how desperate his situation was.

Perhaps my memory is failing, but there has been nothing about Bran et. al north of the wall, right?!

Was mentioned in the previous episode of course by Theon's admission he didn't actually kill them.

I agree with some of the views above about the previous episode, really well acted and the whole White Walker attack was brilliantly done. Another reason why I'd much rather invest my time watching quality TV with good character development than a 2 hour film trying to do the same, but badly.

This season has definitely been laying the groundwork for a big season next season but that shouldn't take away from the fact that even with the sheer amount of storylines/dialogue you can really get a feel for the impending crescendo of the story!

I have to say that I am now getting rather irritated with the amount of changes they are making from the books. I am not interested in what the screenwriters think, I want to see the book precisely transferred to the page with no changes or admissions. Go.

That would have made a terrible TV show and they would have cancelled it on the first series. There are too many superfluous characters and dull plot lines that lead to nowhere, it would have been confusing, impossible to follow and quite honestly pretty dull.

I disagree. They have missed out so much, which is bad enough, but changing things to suit themselves is really taking the mick.

You haven't really identified why it's taking the mick though. You haven't addressed why you disagree with oli collett's post:

They're not changing things from the book on a whim, without rhyme or reason. 'They've missed out so much' is an empty comment, presumably you would have made it a 40 episode series and quadrupled the budget?
