Games with really good atmosphere?

Honestly, you'd be hard-pressed to find something that beats Stalker in this regard on PC. I can't even imagine how it would feel with up-to-date graphics...

Other than that, Silent Hill 2, 3 & 4. 4 is not as scary but the atmosphere and overall tone of the game will really weigh down on you, trust me. Frankly these games might even rival Stalker's atmosphere. Also, they have some of the most brilliant OSTs to date. Wholeheartedly recommended.

Also:
-Alan Wake
-Dead Space
-Limbo
-Bioshock
-Resident Evil 4

Controversial choice, but DayZ standalone, for all its faults its atmosphere is unrivalled in my opinion, if you like the survival genre, Also check out Miscreated, whilst not quite as atmospheric as DayZ (in my opinion) it's map is amazing

"atmosphere" is something that ton of games have, but the absolute best ones are:

STALKER trilogy (simply the the most atmospheric games ever made)
METRO + Metro Last Light
Alien Isolation

But there are ton of games with great atmopshere in all kinds of genres.

Alien isolation has to be one of the best I've played recently.

Can't believe no ones said Half Life 2 yet?

This one's been on my wishlist for some time. Hoping it turns up cheap or in a bundle or something. It's good then?

Yeah it's great. I've never felt so much wonder and joy playing a game (although I have to admit I usually play it after I've had a roll up cig with that smelly green tobacco in it). It's quite a chilled out game but the scenery, visuals and audio are fantastic. Only downside for me is the max resolution is 1920x1080 (or 1200) - still looks fantastic but I can imagine how could it would look on my monitor at 3440x1440.

What I meant by atmosphere was.. hmmm maybe a better way to put it is 'games where you notice the atmosphere when not actually doing anything' ...? like street fighter isnt known for noticing or enjoying the atmosphere..

Some great ones here.

I recently bought fear + expansions and it is amazing how a sparse setting adds to the surrealness of the game..

will defo try some of these

Mordheim city of the damned has fantastic atmosphere, the city maps are superbly designed and really shows off the world as you would imagine it from the tabletop game.

It's also tense! Every move you make can lead to certain death, like a hardcore version of xcom but played in third person.

Ah, another thing about dead space, I watched a video about how number three, the coop was supposed to be a figment of his imagination as he descends into madness. Which is well cool.

EA canned that brilliant idea and made it about shooting ****, because they want everything to be 5 million copies or more.

Oh and forced multi player when the team didn't want to spread their resources thinly.

Boo EA

Another vote for the entire Stalker series.
F.E.A.R. also great.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent, an absolute must!
Amnesia: Machine for Pigs. (not as good as A:TDD, but still atmospheric).
DOOM.
The Forest. Still early access, but great atmosphere/game.
Alien Isolation.
The Park. Superb!
