GeForce GTX 590 Key Features Revealed

Same as with 580 reference SLI, I don't see people complaining about lack of Vram there, surround gaming is such a niche market it's not important to Nvidia.

I don't care for any of AMD's or NVs range ATM but if this card is meant to compete with the 6990 then it would be better not to be handicapped at highres with less Vram than the 6990.

Surround gaming is getting bigger from what i see which nvidia as a business obviously should care about. If you look at some of the 6990 reviews that include surround gaming theres quite a few games that won't run with gtx580sli due to ram limitations. This could sway a buyers opinion over to amd.

Who says 1.5GB is going to limit anything at surround res, show me the tests/reviews.

Pains me to link to them but in the OCP review 580SLI v 6970Xfire, in the most demanding vram intensive game out there metro 2033 the 1.5Gb 580s does fine at 5760x1200. Lack of vram argument is overblown when comparing 1.5GB v 2GB.

3. http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/1127/pg5/amd-radeon-hd-6990-graphics-card-review-aliens-vs-predator.html In this one you can clearly see the problems that happened with the 5970 and gtx570.

If the gtx570 is running out of ram then the gtx580 does not have much headroom either. I don't think people that are shelling out the kind of money a gtx590 is gonna cost want to be that close to running out of ram and at worst are running out of ram. This review is not running at the highest surround resolution which the gtx590 with only 1.5 gb would most likely not cope with.

Will all come down to the clock speeds, can't tell at the moment if Nvidia will be able to clock it high enough to beat 6990.

Techpowerup have the 6990 as the loudest card in recent times, louder than 4870x2 and 480. If Nvidia can keep the noise down they will have a winner IMHO

My gut feeling, based on Techpowerups stats, are the 590 will be quieter - they show the 580 as quieter per watt than 6970 and I expect the 590 will be 375w like the 6990

I agree.

Most people buying AMD 6990 or GTX 590 would want to play at higher resolutions with minimum being full HD and perhaps continuing to eyefinity or surround setup.

If the high end card is struggling at those resolutions due to less VRam, then that would look bad on the card even if it is a very powerful card.

So what, base a decision on buggy console port bulletstorm, I think not, as for DA2 it currently has major performance issues running in DX11 on Nvidia cards. The rest of the tests run fine at surround res.

As always price will decide if they have a winner and i can't see nvidia matching amd for price/performance. They could bring out a card 5% better than the 6990 and much quieter but if its 700-800 pound its still a loser.

Lmao whatever you say it still shows that games are going to cause 1.5gb a problem. as i said above this resolution is not the highest either.

What games? you show bulletstorm which frankly no one cares about and DA2 which as stated has problems currently with Nvidia, face facts 1.5 GB is not limiting in 99.9% of games.

I think both cards may end up being balanced such as 590 outperforming 6990 at lower res whereas 6990 taking the lead at higher resolutions. Then there is the usual performance/price, heat, noise, powerconsumption etc.

So both cards may perform well in their respective arenas:).

Raven they are still games being limited by memory end off. I do not care if they are rubbish, bad ports or great they are still limited. As pc games are usually console ports these days should that not worry potential multi monitor gamers even more. 1gb of memory is struggling to cope on normal resolutions its not to hard to see that 1.5gb may start struggling with bigger resolutions. I think it was vega that said his gtx580 3gb phantoms are performing much better than his 1.5gb gtx580's on his 3 monitor setup and the only difference is memory.

Because that's what you choose to believe. My experience and many others is contrary to that, however.

Your opinion is not a statement from nvidia.

And don't go down the niche market road, it's a bumpy ride when you consider the products being discussed.

And console ports? Get with the times, nearly everything is going to be like that from now on and has been for a while. Consoles have far higher return than pc's it makes solid business sense to design for consoles then port over to the pc.

A number of forthcoming titles are being built up for the PC, BF3 being one of them, PC gaming has never been so profitable, just got to looks at the revenue steam takes from sales. PC gaming is on the ascendancy.

Agree 1.5GB will be fine and wont make the difference between success or failure of this card.

To me the 6990 is too loud to consider buying so has already failed. If the 590 comes in around the same noise level it will also be a failure in my eyes.
