Geforce GTX 780, 770 coming in May

what is the general consensus about the 780? worth it or not? i would be coming from a Xfire 6970 set-up
So any comments welcome ;)

An overclocked 7970 is as fast as your 6970 xFire, the GTX 780 is 20% faster than the mildly factory overclocked 7970 (Ghz Edition)

The 7970 is £330~ for a good one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-063-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=938

The GTX 780 is £550 for a reference cooler http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-177-GW&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1341
Nice looking cooler but apparently not as effective as a third party cooler.

For a GTX 780 with a third party cooler your looking at £600 up http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-114-GI&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1341

£200+ premium for +20% on the completion is a rip-off IMO, but draw your own conclusions. :)

This is 100% correct, anyone arguing otherwise is a fanboy.

Goodnight sweet nvidia prince.

They were supposed to be released at the same time as the 2GB version. Not sure if they were and sold out or just wasn't.

I looked on the day the 770 came out and could only see the 2gb version listed.

Looking on Google now and can only see one site listing it as 'coming soon'.

Hi humbug thanks for such a detailed reply :)
So a single 7970 OC is as fast as what i have well that is impressive, i did not realise they were that good.

I can't find a direct link between the 7970 Ghz and 6970 xFire, or even 6990. but I have found this http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Catalyst_12.11_Performance/23.html

As you can see there the 7970 Ghz is the same (bar 3%) as the GTX 590, which is about the same as the 6990 if not a little faster while the 6990 is a 6950 in xFire....

Its a long winded way to get there but yes, I have seen benchmarks with the 7970 Ghz and 6990 together in reviews and they are right in the same ball park, I just can't find them now.....

i'm not trying to say the gtx780 price is good, its anything but, however you are doing a bit of an apples/oranges thing there. the hd7970 you chose for the comparison is not a ghz edition and so the difference is >20%, more like 30%.

obviously for the £330 you mentioned you can get ghz edition cards which are closer to the gtx780, but if your going to compare overclocked cards (the ghz edition being a factory overclocked 7970 released to combat the gtx680) then it makes sense to do so for both cards, and an overclocked gtx780 (such as the evga sc) will outperform the 7970ge and standard 7970 by 35% and 47% respectively.

*performance figures taken from the tpu review of the evga gtx780 sc, combined performance chart http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/evga/gtx_780_sc_acx_cooler/26.html

The GTX 770 is a factory overclocked GTX 680 in just the same way the 7970 ghz is a higher clocked 7970, big woof.... would you suggest the GTX 770 has no place in comparison? no of curse you wouldn't

If you want Aples to Aples the Asus Matrix Platinum 7970's run at 1100 / 1700 out of the box with higher voltage unlocks that will easily run it at 1300Mhz

splitting hairs over what should be compared to what is silly, there are overclocked versions of the 7970 Ghz, the fact remains the GTX 770, GTX 780 and 7970 Ghz are reference GPU's with third party overclocked versions.

If your going to suggest you can only compare a third party overclocked GTX 780 against the 7970 Ghz then by your own argument you can only use a third party overclocked 7970 Ghz.

And at the end of all that the same result remains, the GTX 780 is £200 or more expensive than a GPU only 20% slower.

Gigabyte 4gb is the one I'm waiting for :(

hope not >£400 though - as a 770 at >£400 vs a 780 would be a no brainer to me - 780 would seem like better value to me

It's on their website but not released anywhere. I can't find any info about dates either.

I think it's going to be about £420-£440 though.
