Geforce GTX 780, 770 coming in May

Less of a shake up than consoles have caused in the past. Traditionally consoles out perform PC spec by a fair bit at launch, for example when the Xbox 360 launched in 2005 it had a triple core CPU most PC users had single core CPU or dual core, and the GPU was more powerful than the then high end PC GPU. A year later the 8800 GTX line launched and PC started to get better at console 'ports' or multiformats..

The PS4 by contrast is the first console that is truly already outclassed by PC hardware and it hasn't even launched yet. The time it takes the PC to surpass the console will be much faster this gen.

That's what they say anyway, somehow PC performance never seems to quite equate to much more than consoles from what I've seen. Sure it does years on but when you are basically dealing with just one or two years after? It's not like PS3 games currently look like crap or anything and the reason for that is simply because even with advancements consoles always hold up well because they get more performance out of there cards since it's standardised hardware so a lot easier to fine tune and optimise for rather than just making the cards try and do well for the game. I know it's better with PC but as someone who bought a GTX 460 2gb (wasn't OMG but was the better option of the mid range cards at the time) I haven't really seen stuff on PC even years down the line that made me think the consoles like PS3 looked dated which is kind of sad considering the card came out years after the consoles did and still not that impressive.

PC gaming is always better of course because more horsepower but I think a lot of it is slightly over exaggerated, until you start modding of course but then you're usually looking at quite expensive cards that come out years after the consoles just to make a noticeable difference and that isn't really a shock. You can look at it from the other end and say consoles lose there edge quick but something tells me for most consumers the 'edge' is still maintained because not everyone runs top end cards where the real performance shows up the consoles. I'm planning on getting a 670 or an 800 series when they get released if they are decent prices but at least then I'll finally see stuff that shows up the PS3 a lot, from what I've seen of the tech demoes of PS3 I don't think PC's will be so much visually more impressive for a long while still. It's just the problem that you can tell differences if you had a side by side comparison but noticeable differences? Not until you spend a lot and wait a year or two at least. Just my opinion though.

If the 780 comes in around £420 then that isn't too bad at all, I'll still wait till release to believe it though.

Are you for real....£420 for a graphics card.....just think about that for a minute. With people struggling for money you think £420 for a graphics card is good value?

It won't be £420....It's the UK we live in remember...it'll be £480-£500 for the card. Not worth the money.

Not sure if that is a joke?

---------------------------------------------------------------

The PC surpassed the console one year after launch with the Nvidia 8800 GTX (My personal favorite GPU lol)

Ever since we've been using higher resolution, higher fps, multiple screens etc. Meanwhile console games barely scrape along at 30fps @ sub HD resolutions look awful for the most part (Expect a few multi million pound exclusives that look alright but not as good as a typical PC game or even a port)

This time around the PC hardware is already ahead of the game. It won't take long for PC visuals to look truly amazing compared to PS4 / Xbox 720 counterparts.

PC will see gaming at beyond 1080P, all the way up to 4K and multiscreen while for next 5-6 years consoles will be stuck at 1080P and some games will run at a lower resolution than that.

Unreal engine 4 is already watered down for PS4, the PS4 isn't even out yet.. Although games will look great on PS4 due to direct to the metal coding, in a couple years the PC will be wowing people with it's graphics, way beyond console. If graphics are your thing Maxwell and beyond will be epic..

Gregster the irony of that post..

Not worth going from a 680 to a 780?

Didn't you go from a GTX 680 £400 to a Titan £850?

:D;):)

Yep but I have my Titans an average of 45% faster than my 680's and with playing in triple screen 3D, I needed that extra boot that two Titans give over two 680's.

£829 each and nothing on the horizon from Nvidia or AMD that would touch the Titan for a couple of years when the Titan was released.

I see your point though :p

Yes I'm for real, I expected the 780 to be 500-600 myself and on your comment of people struggling for money, you shouldn't be purchasing a new graphics card at all if you're struggling for money.

Struggling for money? Not many people on here struggling for money..

£420 would be a great price, especially as the GTX 680 and 670 would get knocked down quite a bit.

Go away with your "People struggling for money" arguments and leave that for the Jeremy Kyle show please.

Haha, yeah only messing with ya. I think there is a good incentive for people to jump to the GTX 780, it has near GTX Titan Spec / hopefully performance.

Depending on the price I'll go with two 770's or two 780's. I think near £500 each the 780's will be to much for me to justify, a pair of 770's at £300 each would be nice though :)

I just don't see any need for Nvidia to charge more than the current 680/670. A good potential with AMD in camp quiet to sell sell sell.

The last time I paid above £400 for a GPU it was an XFX 6800 Ultra. I skipped series 7 and got a BFG 8800 GTS in Feb 2007 for £250, that failed and it got RMA'd into a 9800 GTX+ early 2009. I skipped series 200 and 300 and in July 2010 I got my Gainward GTX 470 for £300 which I am still using.

It's run all the games out so far this year like Crysis 3 and Far Cry 3 on high if not maxed, Tomb Raider stressed it though, was getting 25FPS on the internal benchmark.

As long as it can run Battlefield 4 ok I can see myself skipping the 700 series too, unless it's at a good price like £300-350, but I am seriously skeptical on a sub £400 release.

Is it a sad I can remember GPU's like ex-girlfriends? :x

People struggling for money shouldn't be spending cash on high end graphics designed for gaming.

If any of the spec rumours/suggestions in this thread are to be believed, I don't see why anyone would go for 770s over 680s at presumably at least a £100 mark-up other than cos they must have a 7 series card!

I remember the gen before that (2001'ish I think). Was hyped beyond belief so I paid about £400 for a GeForce FX 5800 Ultra. Was a good enough performer, but I am not kidding when I say I have heard hoovers run quieter. Ridiculous and that put me off nVidia, to the point where I haven't had an nVidia card since.

Wishful thinking I fear. I doubt your GTX470 card will cope well at anything over or even equating to low/medium settings on BF4. You're in a prime position to upgrade and see a huge gain, but with BF4 coming out Q4 2013 and Maxwell coming in Q1 20114, I think you'd be well advised to bite the bullet and wait for Maxwell.

I thought Maxwell wasn't that far away, I don't think I can wait that long :D

lmao are YOU for real? This isn't a council estate sub forum. It's a high end PC enthusiast one so I'd hope that anybody "struggling for money" would not be considering a £400 GPU in the first place.

Though I read stories of families on benefits arguing that their 42" LED TVs with Sky Sports HD is necessary for minimum QoL so it wouldn't surprise me to hear somebody argue that a £450 GPU is necessary :D

It's not "our" fault people are struggling for money but I don't see why that fact would have any impact on what somebody buys with their own money. What you said sounds very socialist :D.
