Geforce GTX 780, 770 coming in May

When they say "reference card" do they mean the board is made by Nvidia and shipped to the brand name company to put their own cooler on and stick it in a branded box?

Reference card means the hardware (including the cooler) is straight from nVidia.

Then Asus, Gigabyte, Inno3D etc stick them in their own boxes and ship them off.

EVGA has a "superclocked" one which is the same but they modify the BIOS before boxing it up.

Ah I see, thanks. Hence why all the GPU's have the same cooler/fan in the pics on the OcUK store.

I ordered 2x EVGA SC with the ACX cooler. Time to replace my pair of 3Gb MSI Lightning 580's that thanks to a random Windows 8 bug that Nvidia won't acknowledge, cannot be run in SLI with any driver other than 310.70.

Hmmmmm, theres some price jumping going on. Googling around the past hour for the 780's and other places have increased their prices.

Supply and demand I guess.

so they have :(
EDIT: and it looks like those wanting 3rd party coolers are going to have to pay north of 600

I think I'm going to go and buy two. Just to be clear, there is zero difference between the current stock versions available, right?

Pretty much. Some people think the EVGA "superclocked" version warrants £40-50 more when essentially they stuck a higher base and boost clock to get 100MHz more at the top end (you will be able to do this easily yourself). Others feel EVGA warranty is somehow better.

In reality it makes little difference. Getting the EVGA card for the "superclock" is utterly pointless as proper overclocked design cards are just round the corner if that is what you want. Otherwise just overclock it yourself with EVGA precision X or the like.
