Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

It wasn't. In fact it was slower in many games and only faster in a handful of them. After 3 months of driver enhancements, it became consistently faster. Just go back to forum posts and YouTube comparisons from the time of release to see this.

I think you are confusing the 1070 with 1080. The 980ti was on par or faster than the 1070. On release the 1080 was around 25-40% faster (game dependent):

https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-review,1.html

Should clarify that screenshot was taken a few hours after the presentation the other day which I imagine precedes Athlons HWC other tweet above.:)
I don't think anyone should be expecting 2070 to be faster than the 1080 Ti.

Going to be a long three weeks waiting for benchmarks.

Guess nV are using that time to find out how many customers will throw money at them regardless of performance ;)

What I find appauling is that if that chap was some bloke on a forum having one of the normal discussion-arguments about tech,it might be something you might see.

This chap,is a reviewer who on the face of looking at some company provided bumpf(on his trip paid for by Nvidia),then basically has said this is 10/10 before he even reviewed them. How does he know until he tests the cards?? Has he forgotten why you need to test things first?? It is like he has made his mind up already before testing.

Then he more or less threatens his own viewers who for the most part are annoyed by pricing. Any idiot knows these new cards will beat the old ones, and do more interesting stuff. People know that - its the price increases which people don't want. Like I said 50% extra performance for 50% extra cost over Pascal does not move price/performance forward, even 70% more performance for 50% more cost is better but not a massive improvement in price/performance.

Is this the "review industry" which is meant to be for the best interests of the consumer?? Really??

So let me get this straight a reviewer is threatening people,ie,gamers who are annoyed about the price increase - even if its 50% faster for 50% more money price/performance has stagnated.

Edit!!

Oh wait he made this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=162DeB3xbqk

Is it me or after the Tomb Raider video was posted yesterday some of the "media" have come out firefighting?
Yet the only thing we haven't seen is numbers. We see "Relative" performance numbers, not "Absolute" performance numbers like we used to do all those years.

The Relative values are moving around depending the parameters, yet many take them as absolute performance indicators...

But what has bugged me more and makes me more suspicious about all these shenanigans, is Nvidia creating the "need" of new unit of measure Turing performance, and Jensen said so on the presentation quite a few times. Like the "Turing FPS" because normal FPS is not good enough to measure the "new world" of graphics.

Also I would like to point out, lets not forget when AMD launched Vega, was referring to "relative performance" between Vega & 1080 with those Freesync/Gsync monitors.

The 980ti was on par or faster than the 1070.

1070 was faster out the box V 980Ti, six and half a dozen when you overclocked the Ti.

Yep, remuneration at it's finest, but it's been that way for years now, nothing new unfortunately.

And yes, when you price out your elite tier that previously always backed you up because that ~£700 gpu was within reach, it's pretty ironic how they can turn and instead of accusing others of being whiners become whiners themselves, Nv's cutting off a considerable slice of loyalty with the pricing and the damage control is almost instant, imagine PCper will have a TP vid on any day now convincing us explaining that Turing isn't meant for everyone.:p

I wouldn't be surprised. "Is an exclusive product for those who want better realistic looking graphics" the rest of us are plebs living in slums effectively.

You know how stupid his attitude is?? It will be like people complaining about the cost of the new Nikon Z mount mirrorless camera(many £1000s) being threatened by DPReview that they would "eat their words". Yes,I am sure the new Z mount mirrorless cameras will be great cameras, but I would rather see the reviews first.

Also, what is this metric of "eating words" exactly with the 50% extra cost?? 10% extra performance?? 38.7% ? 80.9% ? 50.1%? Shouldn't he just review the cards,so people can make their own mind up?

Well it's the nature of the whole industry though, you do 'favours' you get 'favours' you do a Kyle and you have to buy them yourself to do reviews.

The reviews are likely to be skewed anyway because if you signed the nda and are a review partner you have to test within Nv's set parameters laid out in Nv's review guidelines supplied with the gpu that will show the card in it's best light-or you won't get one to test.

It applies to all review industries to a degree - but there needs to be professionalism. Its entirely stupid if you go and threaten your own viewers/readers they will "eat words" is like trying to pick a fight with your own readers/viewers.

He needs to understand that his readers/viewers will generate the ad income he lives off,so he needs to respect them. He needs them more than his readers/viewers need him.

Look at Linus - he acts goofy but have you noticed how he does not get into fights with his own followers?? He has one of the biggest tech channels.

Any review sites needs to keep it professional and let the benchmarks do the talking. Remember celebs who try to fight with their own followers on social media end up causing themselves more problems.

True, one losses credibility as a impartial journalist when one uses same platform to inform readers of the truth to spout off one's feelings for a brand.

In agreement with you-unfortunately it's probably working for him rather than against him, I mean we are in here creating traffic for OcUK, there's loads of the above happening in here but it creates sales for OcUK or they would have shut this down years ago.

HWC will live or die with what they say and he'll be aware of(or should be) what captures his audience while trying his hardest to sway their opinion to what he wants them to.

Well my viewpoint is - the RTX2000 series can be the next 8800GTX or 9700PRO when reviews hit,but after many years of reading HWC out of habit, not anymore, since its not the first time he has come out with some weirdness(even yonks ago).

Loads of other more professional websites and channels now so not a loss, especially when places like Hardware Unboxed/Techspot,Gamers Nexus,Digital Foundry, etc will probably test the RTX series over dozens of games.

I think my main concerns are the price and how useful the RTX features are in the first generation, and whether too much performance has been given up for the features, since the chips sizes look huge, which probably is not helping there.

However, come the second generation next year or the year after,I will be very interested to see where this goes.

To lazy to scroll to see if posted.

Media were show. All they need to know - naturally under NDA today ( I got it wrong and though is was AIB cards shown )

Interesting comment from HardwareCanucks.

All people posted negative posts on OCUK forum about Turing will eat their negative posts on 14 Sept.

I did say in a previous post it was fast :)

Also got the ''long time till shelves '

Resellers have listed pre-ordered but nothing from distributors

the 1070 is on par or better than the 980ti. Of course the 980ti can generally OC really well but the 1070 is no slouch either and is better in newer titles.

The two worst offenders. Jayz2cents and Hardware Canucks. I unsubscribed from them years ago. They are total total nvidia shills. I wouldn't be surprised if they receive regular bungs from Nvidia. Its so clear to see. They are awful.

Yea stock for stock, i made this argument loads. because all hardware sites generally ran stock clocks to keep it apples vs apples. But te 1070 overclocks it self really well upto its near maximum where as the 980ti boosts only a small amount with generally a lot left in the tank. So when both are overclocked the 980ti wins. Stock vs Stock the 1070 wins.

Just don't understand Nvidia not giving general gaming performance indicators at the reveal. They must've known the pricing would cause a storm but if the performance was looking really good it would offset some of the negativity.

Yeah depends on the overclocking though. There were some duff 980tis.

That could't do more than 1420 on the core? Because that beat a 2ghz 1070. I remember seeing pauls hardware doing a video on it when i was fed up of seeing all reviews spewing the same thing. He took a reference 980ti overclocked it to 1420 on the core and a 1070 MSI twin frozr AIB card and clocked it to just over 2ghz and the 980ti won in most games he tested except one where the 1070 was on par.
