Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

Don’t get me wrong I think RTX does look pretty damn good in the games shown. BFV looks quite spectacular.

However at such a loss to performance?. Leaves me quite underwhelmed a I would much prefer 1440p 165hz than any kind of 1080p at less than 100 frames.

Defeats the point of RTX for me anyway. Although hopefully things will change as release day comes.

I don't think anything will change, not drastically anyway. There's been too many leaks of footage of this at lower resolution. It's been hard enough for the fellas at the GPU manufacturers to get us some of our standard games at these higher resolutions maxed out (my current 1070 struggles to max some games at 1440p (others it aces), so perhaps only the Vega 64, 1080, 1080ti and titans can do it perfectly, perhaps not even some of them). Ray tracing seems like a step too far in terms of usefulness ready maybe but that is as expected when I pre ordered the ti anyway.

I’m still on the fence about getting one at all. I have thought hard about preordering but just can’t bring myself to do it. Not down to money but just down to pure improvement over the last gen.

From what I’ve seen it doesn’t look all that impressive. I’d say if it was running RTX with even 20% loss to overall performance I’d be all over it as I do like the look of RTX in the games shown.

But the fact all these videos are 1080p with 60 or sub FPS doesn’t excite me and puts me off a bit. I don’t really want to be buying into something at such a cost and not end up using it is my biggest fear.

For me, I think they put such a focus on the ray tracing aspect in the unveiling that for the ray tracing not to have been able to perform without much of a performance hit has put a lot of people like yourself off. I get that, I'm a bit disappointed that it's unlikely I myself will use it either. But I went in with a specific performance uplift in mind on non ray tracing games, sounds like that's going to be hit with this, so I felt comfortable enough getting it. Hopefully DLSS will further help too.

OK that is terrible
They stated that they weren't even using the tensor cores for ray tracing and denoising was done by a custom form of TAA, not the tensor cores. I thought using the tensor cores was paramount in terms of improving performance.

They also stated that development of the ray tracing up until two weeks ago had been done on Titan Vs without dedicated ray tracing cores. The current build is based around these limitations and is not taking full advantage of Turing.

There is a lot optimisation potential left and they said that even if this were not the case in order to give more performance the ray tracing could be done at 1080P and the rest at a higher resolution anyway.

If RT is only feasible at 1080p (with a 2080ti as well!!!!), then the 2000 series is going to go down in history as a bit of a flop.

If games are only playable at 1080p with RT on using a 2080ti then where does that lead the likes of the 2080 and 2070? What's the point in them even having the support for RT. You wont be using it unless at 720p or lower.

60fps at 1440 would have been more palatable. 1080 is just getting dredged down to console level Res for the most part.

And if you compare the XboneX 4K Tomb Raider video with the RT ON with the 2080Ti at 1080p the XboneX looks miles better

1080p 30 - Not good enough
1080p 60 - Damn, er no still not good enough

Aren't 1080p monitors still the huge majority? At this point nothing will be good enough. So much for new tech and moving forward.

Well, I've been thinking and thinking about this, and I've now pre-ordered the 2080.

As stated earlier, it's a massive upgrade for me coming from SLI GTX 580's, so I think it's the right choice.

Excited to get me hands on it now!

Oh balls. My first order the bank declined, so I unblocked my card and ordered again.

Guess who just got two order confirmed emails! :D

Phone call to Ocuk in the morning!
