Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

To this day I can’t work out why everyone is so nasty to each other over graphics cards forums, what is it about a GPU that makes everyone want fall out to much?
It's a male primal thing which is why you won't see any female gamers acting like this - shockingly they are all busy enjoying games rather than obsessing over frames and resolutions - clearly they do not know how to PC Master Race properly :D

I ordered 2 and I am am very much looking forward to them arriving.

Ah ok, I did think as much.

I am not wound up I just find it odd that someone would effectively infer that people are mad for pre-ordering then defend that with completely baseless arguments.

I’m afraid that you’re mistaken here mate. I was trying to convey how decided I was on the matter, and that unless pricing changed I wouldn’t sway. If I thought people who pre-ordered were mental, that’s exactly what I would have said.

I’ve referenced several videos, upon which I’ve made my decisions, in this and other threads. So whilst, in my opinion, nothing I’ve stated is baseless, it’s certainly not a result of press releases, official statements or benchmarks. This is a thread about guessing, so that’s what we’re all doing.

This’ll be the third time I’ve said it, but you do you. If you want to drop nearly two grand on 2080s, you go right ahead, I hope you enjoy it. I won’t be, because I can’t condone these prices and the way this launch has been approached.

I’ll say what I’ve said before; I love that NV are focusing not just on ‘moar powar’ but new technologies that add to visual fidelity. However, Tensor cores have been around for quite some time, they’re nothing new, AI has been invested on heavily in different markets and already earned them serious dollar. As for RayTracing, I recently linked a video demonstrating how old it actually is, and that a three year old $150 tablet could achieve 6 Gigarays a second, the same as the 2070.

So whilst new directions for IQ is a great thing, I don’t like the approach of taking old tech, slapping on some dedicated silicon for it, saying it’s groundbreaking and driving up the price by about 50% (don’t quote me I just pulled it out of my bum). And don’t get me started on revealing the price and then charging $100 more.

In summary, I wasn’t saying anyone was mental. If I thought it I’d say it. Love the cards? Great, enjoy them. But I don’t want to be a part of the reason we continue to be mugged off like this in the future.

Well just read the last page and some bloody good fun reading. I came in from work all het up after a busy evening but feel much better now that a few people (including @KentMan ) have got it off their chests about those buying (again).

Good stuff :D

Long post

Erm, mate, Maybe you should read my whole post especially the line in my post before your quote? You went off on one and nothing I said was directed at you at all. I quoted you because you were a person who also noticed Las Vega fanboying hard about the 2080 on the forums. Everything before and after your quote was directed at Las Vega.

So relax!! :D:D It did make me laugh though, hope you can see the funny side of it too. :p

An intelligent response to whether the 2080 will beat the 1080Ti...

It did get you triggered though :p

Well, his last few posts would trigger anyone. I said I wouldn't buy one because of the price, but I haven't called anyone names for buying one. Most of my posts have been pretty positive about Ray tracing and DLSS, but, I am also trying to be realistic about the performance in normal games. When we have no performance figures and somebody high up in Nvidia comes out and does an interview 9 days after the launch and indicates what level of performance to expect, I am not sure why so many people are so keen to dismiss what he says. It's the most concrete information we have. If the performance comes out better than that's great, everyone's happy. But, if the performance isn't that, people who were hoping for 50% increases or more because of the price are going to be disappointed.

Fist time poster here, been reading this thread for ages and can’t believe the statements from some people. I came here looking for insights into the 2080ti as I thought I might get one, obvs the price of the card has put me off a somehwhat as I have a 1080 currently. I can get the card through my company so wouldn’t pay vat or tax but still think I might just get a ultra wide instead for now and sit it out for awhile.

I fully understand people buying this card and can’t get my head around people attacking them saying how stupid they are etc without benchmarks.. pre-orders can be cancelled or even cards sent back if you aren’t happy.. anyway just wanted to say hi to everything and looking forward to reviews.

This is the speculation thread, and things get side tracked here regularly. The best place to go for info is the pre-order thread or the Ray Tracing thread if you want more info about the technology used. There is a few very interesting links in that thread. Worth a watch/read.

All good and whilst we do favour one brand over another, you are open for change like myself and appreciate new ideas. I certainly wouldn't call you a fanboy (might behind your back though :P)

Since 1080s have now dropped under £400 that would suggest a good performance increase in the 2080 and something to fill the gap coming.

Spot on.

I do think that with the leaks, and responses from NV that you reference, we’ve arrived at ballpark figures, though that’s not to say they can’t turn out better (or worse). I did have a chuckle though; when Nvidia told us we needed new metrics to measure performance.

To be honest I’m gutted, I was all ready to drop serious cash on a Titan or ti with a lovely new monitor, but the ambiguity of the launch alone was enough to tell me to wait.

For me the most exciting thing in the presentation was DLSS; it improves IQ and performance, works at all resolutions and it’s also genuinely new. Tensor cores process it in parallel and from what I can tell it’s unique to Nvidia. Aside from the price and lack of any real performance metrics, a lack of real focus on DLSS surprised me the most.

RayTracing technology on the other hand was harped on about slide after slide, and it’s not even theirs. It’s based on Microsoft’s standard, NV have just created dedicated silicon for it. Nor is it recent; 6 Gigarays a second was achieved years ago on a $150 tablet.
