Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

Considering the attitude of most of the internet, telling everyone to wait as there's new cards coming in a couple of months since January, people won't be able to hold back. And Nvidia know it and will charge accordingly.

I do fear your not going to be wrong there.

But the alternative advice is to "buy today", and that sure as hell isn't sending a message to nVidia that they need to lower prices :p

Surely it's the people who are waiting who are demonstrating restraint...? Not sure where you get the idea that all these people must pounce on the first available 11 series card, when it comes?

Here, there and everywhere any time anyone asks about buying a card now, they're met with a chorus of 'Don't by now! New cards are just round the corner and you'll get a better card for the same money!' & 'It's old tech! You don't want to be seen buying three year old technology!' The same thing they've been saying since the beginning of the year. Yes the FE edition cards will likely be more expensive to begin with but I really cannot see any version of the 1100 series being faster AND cheaper than what's currently available. I don't think Nvidia have ever done that recently that I can remember. You want to go faster, you'll pay more. Even compared to pricing now.

Not true; at release and for a considerable period after release nobody will be advising to wait. Unless the latest release was a complete flop (hi Vega).
'It's old tech! You don't want to be seen buying three year old technology!'
People say that when the existing cards are three years old... which isn't "any time". And also hasn't been said yet because the 10 series isn't quite three years old yet... Wiki says May 2016 was 1080 release.

Lastly it doesn't have to be faster and cheaper to be better value. You know all it has to be is better perf/£.

Waiting is a calculated gamble that the increase in perf/£ from moving to next-gen is worth the minor inconvenience of not having a top-end GPU today.

I did say 'asks about buying a card now' to be fair. Pardon me for saying 'three' instead of 'two' as well.

I also agree that performance per pound could increase, but that's very subjective as many games and benchmarks will show different results depending on many factors. You really need to look at the games you play most, and then decide.

I do suspect though that only a few are going to be happy with the release pricing.

Some of us have a modicum of patience, and understand that buyer's remorse is a real thing.

Nothing is going to make you feel like a muppet more than buying a last gen card near full RRP, just before a new gen lands and makes your card look dated.

The 10 series already looks dated btw. Probably because it's over two years old.

Enjoy your ancient card :p

The 10 series are still great cards despite how you feel about them.:p

Completely agree. That's why I slotted this old GTX660 in to tide me over until the new cards drop.

The "don't buy it now" crowd seem to largely base their argument on the hope that the 11 series will somehow be launched at reasonable prices. Make no mistake the 11 series is not going to be launched at prices lower than the 10 series. Sure a 10 series is still at a horrible price, but waiting for new cards isn't going to sort that out. Miners are currently dictating prices and bringing out a new generation of card is actually more likely to make that situation worse rather than better. While we all get excited about the 11 series, fact is there is still the underlying massive problem with miners.

i dont think anyone is expecting the 11 series to be cheaper than the 10 series like for like, however if the 1180 launches at around (or just above) the launch price of the 1080 but with performance 10-20% above the 1080ti then that for many would be worth the - hopefully less than 3 month wait - from buying a 1080ti today.

my problem is i am not really interested in a blower card.. so that will probably be another month or so wait on top for the aftermarket cards. i may end up waiting till black friday, meaning my £400 GTX980 which came with a game and a bunch of credit for some F2P titles will be 4 years old almost exactly, and would have been great value. Hopefully there will be a good 1180 aftermarket deal by then..... that does mean me waiting another 4+ months however.

If you waiting for a custom 11 card you will be waiting awhile guarantee. I preordered day one 1080 Ti and waited nearly 4 months. This looking like a pascal refresh. I might be waiting until 7nm. Looking forward to benchmarks

I am expecting there will be an improvement price for performance, otherwise wtf is the point? How can anyone not expect this? Every time new cards are about to come out, people come out with “it will be more expensive than the cards out now if they offer more performance”. Lol. And every time I have to explain, if that were true, since I started buying graphics cards in the late 90’s to now, a graphics card would cost as much as buying a house, as each gen price would go up for every tier.

Also many people like me like new tech, I have had 3 pascal cards already. There is nothing exciting about getting a card that has been out for ages to me. Like when I got my 980Ti recently from members market, I hardly run any benchmarks, don’t even bother overclocking it as no warranty. But when I get the new 1170/80 I will be putting through many benchmarks, overclocking and participating having fun here with people who have new shiny hardware :)

Obviously each to their own though.

I saw this happen to a few guys last time around on here and they created threads about it. One guy purchased two Kingpin 980Ti’s for more than 1080’s cost on launch. He had it all for a few weeks before the 1080 came out.

My 980Ti that I picked up for £190 recently is still great card too. Will do the job nicely until the new cards arrive :p:D

With 7nm cards expected within Q3 next year, will you still spend on a 11xx series card if it turns out to be produced on 12nm?
Q3 NEXT year? absolutely.

I need a card sooner rather than later. my gtx 980 cant cope with my 4K TV and i want to mod games like skyrimVR.

its bad enough waiting 3 months, no way i am waiting 18months ;)

Would make much more sense to go for a 1170 if 7nm is next year, unless cards up to 1180 will be 12nm and then they put the 1180Ti to 7nm? Or for a whole new range of cards.
This is what I am thinking. I was planning on going 1180, but if 1170 performance is similar to a 1080Ti then that will do me until 7nm stuff hit as that is likely when Cyberpunk 2077 will come out which is when I will need the extra power anyway. That is when I will get either a 7nm Titan or 1280Ti or whatever they decide to call it.

In the mean time I can just have fun with some new tech. The 1070 I had was a great card when it came to acoustics. It hardly made any noise and hit 2000MHz with ease. Imagine 1080Ti power running much more efficiently like that outputting a lot less noise and heat, very appealing :)
