'Generic' Shooter

Well we can debate on the definition of an FPS all day, because there's no official definition of the term. In my mind Deus Ex was an FPS. Yes it contained many other elements too but it was still primarily an FPS.

You can pretend it is a football manager game for all I care, doesn't change the fact that it's not an FPS. It's an action/RPG game and there have been more than a few like it, but it's one of the best.

You still can't even begin to compare it to Halo 3 though. Compare Halo 3 to another FPS like Call Of Duty 4 or Half Life 2 if you want to compare it to anything, but you'll suddenly find that your list of "revolutionary" shooters is pretty much nil even if there are great ones.

The developers themselves said it's not an FPS. If you want to try and leverage a debate over subjective definitions, it's not going to work out well for any of us, and is a largely pointless discussion. Draw a line somewhere, or everyone will just go wild. See case in point - Ace Combat sucks compared to Flight Simulator.

What the hell, really. So who/what is this almighty objective power that has labelled Deus Ex an action/RPG game, please tell me.

It's entirely open to interpretation. I think it's an FPS that incorporates RPG/adventure elements. But again that's based on what I believe is an FPS...etc...etc.

??? It was you and a few others that used subjective definitions in your arguments, not me.

You're the one comparing Deus Ex to Halo 3 in an attempt to make Halo 3 look more "generic".

Honestly that's no different to saying GTA4 is a better car game than PGR4 because you can get out of the car.

echo what most people have said its not an FPS. If you have to narrow it to one genre then its an RPG but as mentioned its really an RPG/Action hybrid. Non generic FPS games for me are Half life 2 (physics/mavity gun, telling a story without cutscenes, just the general feel of the game feels very different to most FPS) and Chronicles of Riddick (first game to properly do melee combat in first person I believe, excellent use of lighting, good use of movie license, great story)

Well I can only act on my subjective if there is no objective. If I didn't then what could I do? I wouldn't be able to compare a game with another game...EVER.

The way I see it Deus Ex took the basic FPS formula and added many more dimensions to the gameplay, so it wasn't just a simple run and gun game, unless you wanted to play it that way. On top of that there was the adventure aspect.

See, this is what I disagree with. I would say it took the basic shooter formula and the basic RPG formula, then added stuff, since the RPG elements in the game certainly were not tacked on they were an integral part of the game. It's the same type of game as Dark Messiah Of Might And Magic and Oblivion, but much better.

Generic is something that's knocked together without a Soul. It's simple a to b and level done, repetition of game play and no sections of real class.

A perfect example is Blacksite.
