Getting Idea's

I'm no diesel fanboy, but saying there is nothing below 2000rpm is rubbish. I know for a fact that the 320d makes decent boost below 1500rpm, and just looked at a dyno chart of one making 210lb/ft at 1500rpm. At the end of the day though, it still smells, rattles like a tractor, and is out of breath by 4000rpm.

i never said your last diesel experience was the TD, the comment was merely aimed towards your old-fashioned views on diesels. they are no longer noisy, smokey, unrefined lumps and have come along way.

you know this, i know this, so stop implying otherwise.

You don't really seem to have a clue, do you? The sort of diesel that wont ever drop below 40-45mpg even when 'hooning' will be something like a 1.4 TDI, perhaps at a push one of the super slow 2.0's. The more powerful ones will be comfortably below 40mpg.

He's right y'know. The old man has an A8 4 litre twin turbo diseasal job and when giving it beans it drops to around 20 mpg. Granted its hauling 2+ tons of luxo barge, and is more economical than an equivalent powered petrol lump in a car that size but diesel's aren't some sort of miracle engine's that run on nothing - to make power you still have to get fuel and air through them.

My dad has a signum 2.2 dti and when your in the car its comfortable and fairly quiet but when it starts up even the biggest girl could tell it doesn't sound as smooth as a petrol engine.

as you say, its a 4litre twin turbo shifting a couple of tonnes, hardly relevant compared to the majority of dervs out there.

of course it wouldn't. i wouldn't expect it to?

I'm going out in a minute to run a few errands around town in the 318d. I'm not going to drive it like I've nicked it - we'll see what the economy is..

Ive always thought Fox was a TWOCer.. oh no that was something else :p

not really :p

one of my injectors had a knock, £29 off ebay and an hour later, the knock was gone. :)

Traditionally parts on PSA group cars are cheap, and normally easy to work on. I doubt it would be the same story on a more modern engine

I don't understand why there is an argument here. Clearly some people like the way diesel drives, some people like the way petrol drives. Why do both sets of fanboi's feel the need to convert the other? The world would be a dull place if everyone had the same view of things.

Irrespective of what people say, on a motorway cruise, on average a derv will return significantly more mpg than an equivalently powered petrol, and have better in gear power available. A car is not a toy for many people, it is a means of getting from A to B.

I've tried a quote on a 316i :(
Isn't the engine a 1.9 8v?

£1552

I dont know what a RWD car is like to handle as I've never drove one :o

An manager where I used to work has/had a 316i and wouldn't drive it in the snow and ice :p

So I just went into town, out to the industrial estate, then a quick run up the A38 a few miles to drop a parcel off. Must have done about 20 miles in total. Whilst I didn't drive like a nun I also didn't drive it like my trousers were on fire - I just drive normally.

So, without further ado, the economy:

Can we please stop this rubbish that diesels never ever go below 45mpg now please? We don't get more normal than a 143bhp 2 litre diesel engine. This is a real world diesel engine in real world conditions. Infact it should be better than most as it's an Efficient Dynamics car with auto stopstart etc etc.

316 is underpowered and gutless, try a quote on a 320d :p

They can be driven, yes, but if you need to pick up speed not an awful lot happens for a bit. This is frustrating, then all the power begins to arrive once you get over 2000rpm. The car I've got at the moment is the same - negotiating speed ramps in 2nd, and then accelerating away - foot hard to the floor, nothing nothing nothing nothing whoa off we go at last.

That is exactly what my megane is like, its a joke, you have to change your driving style to fit in with it.

I've never had mine below 39mpg and I don't drive it lightly.
