Getting insurance for my 18 year old lad, he's just passed his driving test.

Yeah it's his car. When he was learning we got the cheapest learner driver insurance we could. Cost about £200....Theory being we upgrade it when he passes and he's closer to 1year NCB. He passed inside 4 months. They wanted £1500 to upgrade his insurance and offered no refund on the £200 when we politely declined.

Scumbags.

Did you buy it and put 6he car in his name does that actually help or I should own it and get him as main driver? I'm thinking if he actually owns it, might help?
Run a quote with both options and see what happens. I can't see him not being the registered keeper making a massive difference but you never know.

I get the logic behind a new driver going for a “banger”

But I think something not rough around the edges would encourage a new driver to be more carful and look after it.

Generally I don’t envy his position/your position with insurance costs these days as even mine has increased over £300 this year.

It’s time consuming but I’d avoid Compare Websites after the initial quotations, call up the cheapest and go through their process to see what they come up with.

Blackbox
Un-common Young Driver Car
Named Drivers if it helps, in my case a named driver made it more expensive back in the day.

Some have found good deals by looking at classic cars. Sometimes random boring cars can be cheaper than your normal type of first cars. Think Vectra or 1.6 Mondeo.

I would not buy a black box insurance. Chances of it getting cancelled for something very minor are high, seen some many people get done by it. I personally paid £300/year more for the first year to avoid going with black-box insurance.

I suggest cars like

suzuki swift
hyundai coupe(1.6 is cheap to insure)
mazda 2

Some don't even do that it's just a tag that you stick on your dash and it pairs to your phone
What I'm getting at is how do they know your using it and havent stuck it in a grandma's car? Obviously getting found out could be bad, but I like hypotheticals :D . I thought the installation used to be quite involved.

My Lad at 17

My self and my wife on the policy made it cheaper. He has a black box fitted. These make it cheaper too.

100hp car at 17

When i was 17 i had an Austin mini 1000cc 39hp and think my best mate mk1 fiesta 957cc had around 40hp
To think even my first hot hatch when i was about 22 was only 85hp (Ford Fiesta XR2 mk2)

Admittedly my first car was 47 BHP or something but I only had it to learn really then onto something with 190 - I'm glad my parents unlike some weren't the type to completely have a head fit at the notion of having an even remotely powerful car early on. One of my colleagues is 25-26 and recently passed his test and his parents completely put their foot down at the notion of him having a car with a turbo LOL...

It's such a cool car, i'm so glad the insurace was sensible. It was much cheaper than all of the usual "learner car 1.0L" suspects.

I guess there's minimal wrapped around a tree claims on them from kids.

Don't they also have GPS on them? So unless you live with your Nan then they're going to notice that it's not regularly at the address you've claimed to live at.

I like the way with the Panda they are kind of straight down to business without looking like they are basic because of a cost basis (cheap) but without looking utilitarian or missing useful features either. Although the most recent interiors add a bit more complexity, the slightly older ones were better for just jump in and drive which is what they did so well.

That's most diesels out of the running already then :p

Is it normal the price of windscreen repair insurance doubles the car insurance! Found insurance for just over 1k and if I add the windscreen insurance it goed up to 2k!is this even needed as have never needed it before.

It added £18 to move up to the tier that included windscreen cover when I renewed last week. I've never needed it but for £18 it's worth having, for a grand it'll be cheaper just to pay for the windscreen out of pocket if needed.
