Getting insurance for my 18 year old lad, he's just passed his driving test.

Have to consider the car carefully and look at "Black Box" insurance policies too.
I have come across some horror stories online of black box insurance being cancelled for minor speeding issues. I don't really want to take the chance and end up having him with a cancelled insurance record. He's pretty good and I don't think he would speed, but still don't want to take chances.

My son had black box insurance and it was ok, he's not the type to speed though. That was a few years ago though so no idea if they've got stricter.
Unfortunately insurance is going to be painful for a young new driver these days.

I've never had a black box either, but that would worry me. I've heard stories about not accelerating/breaking to hard, but not sure how you can define 'too hard', does an emergency stop count against you?

I believe these are all based on statistics. One emergency stop from 28mph at 6pm won't, but launching the car about corners at 2am will. For example.

Personally if the difference was a couple of hundred quid, I'd swallow that to not have telemetrics but it's possibly a good thing if buying for a young lad

Not the same thing but the Qashqai I have has an economy score thing which is graded similarly and braking you do have to brake pretty hard fairly often to see the score go down on that aspect and cruising is fairly easy to keep high but acceleration is another story - as someone said recently you have to accelerate at a rate where it would take longer than 20 seconds 0-60 to keep a good score.

Yes that's my concern. Especially considering the fact that having a possible cancelled insurance can have a very longterm nagetive impact as well. It's a nightmare as the blackbox insurance is about half the cost!

Accelerating on a slip road springs to mind, sometimes you need to boot it as its the safest option unless you want to be the idiot joining at 30mph:mad::eek:.

Given the number of people lately who won't lift a finger to make it easier for someone to join, despite I suspect demanding it the other way around, an increasing number of poorly designed slip-roads and/or view blocked by poor/lacking maintenance of overgrowth until the very last bit, etc. I can almost understand why some try to merge idiotically slowly.

Does a named driver earn a NCD on a policy? We recently bought a second car for my wife to use in ULEZ and I don't think she could transfer her years as a named driver on my policy to her car

If they do earn a NCD, then would it not make sense to add a new driver to a your policy so they can earn a couple years of hopefully no claims before applying for one with them as the main driver on a car of their own

So to update. In the end got cover for £2900 a year. Still a lot but at least I avoided the blackbox, due to some horror stories I came across online. Now I opted to pay monthly, as the Apr wasn't too much, for what we got . Now out of interest, just ran a few searches and his insurance is now showing as £1800 for the year! Is is possible to then switch insurance company considering we've only ensured him for the last 4 months. I assume it's not possible, but just thought I would ask.
