@Gibbo - Vega Preorders?

Vega will be gash for mining if the FE is anything to go by, so I shouldn't worry about the miners buying them all.

Which in turn should make them less attractive to miners so stock won't be drained at record speed, so maybe they will have a sensible price. Wishful thinking i'll bet :o

But beating a 1080ti at eth isn't that impressive cause the 1080ti is poor at eth mining.

It's a bit like bragging you can throw a shot-put further than Mo Farah, so what? :)

I remember when we used to gauge GPU performance in terms of FPS. Now it's all mega hash this, giga watt that.

I hope one of the Tech sites remembers to do some gaming benchmarks. :(

Performance per dollar, performance per watt, performance per mm squared. bla bla bla. All basically just to take your eyes off raw fps and introduce metrics that can be construed as more favorable instead of framerate.

What a bizarre statement? Gamers still look at Video cards gaming performance. But, there are two different markets and they are looking at different qualities of the various cards. 1 group is looking for mining rates, the other is looking for gaming performance.

The only reason gamers are so interested in mining rates for Vega is because if the mining rates are good the card will be gouged to the moon.

Perf/$ - important to many (most?) people.
Perf/watt - important to those who like quiet but capable PCs.
Perf/mm2 - not sure anyone gives a damn about that one... so long as it isn't taking up the whole living room :)

Perf/watt doesn't necessarily mean a loud system though. Vega being a good example with its aio version.

Never had an AIO but the rad fans must make some noise, yes?

Water cooling (the thought of) is too scary and hardcore for me :p

e: And the noise of the pump? In my experience pumps are normally loud as ****.

Depends on the pump used, a lot of pumps are only noticeable if you have your ear right up to the case. And fans can be the same way depending on the make or voltage used.

Apparently this is mining related...

Some are saying one of the popular mining programs needs to be patched to take full advantage of what's inside i.e after launch day when stock has gone.
Whatever it does it needs to do it at least 3x faster than a 580 because it uses 3x the power. Do we honestly think it will achieve that?

This was the tweet.

Rcvd this random message "v10 56 cu 8 GB running ROCm with the updated Linux kernel with 2 meg pages support beats the 1080ti" which test?

That looks like a referral to the Vega 56...

Eh? What experience? :p

I've been custom water cooling for years and every D5 I've used has been silent. If a card runs hot, the noise won't come from the pump it'll come from the rad fans which will have to run faster to keep the card cool... Just like an air heatsink would have to do. In a custom water loop the solution is simple, just add another radiator and you're back to silence.

Don't forget he said he's never had an AIO and shudders at the thought of water cooling anything - so his only experience is his central heating pump which powers a dozen or more 8-10sq.ft double radiators using 1" copper pipe.

The voice of experience obviously - so pay attention :D

The D5s can be noisy if you e.g. mount them direct to a metal plate. But (as no doubt you do) if they are mounted properly with suitable isolation and run at lower speeds they are indeed pretty much silent.

That goes for a lot of noise generating components, it's how they are installed/managed, a badly (or not well) implemented system can be noisy versus the same components with thought for noise can be silent.

Note: this is mainly for folks that haven't thought about "build for silence/quiet" or have ended up with noisy systems, I'm sure most of the guru builders that we have on here are well aware of this. :)

One example I had recently using an Asrock board and some ML fans: the UEFI on the board spins the fans to max at power on which is rather jet-like, so I instead connected all but one of the fans to the AIO controller and put a resistor on the remaining M/B fan. Thus no more crazy power on noise. It might be nice to blast the fans on power on to e.g. clear dust (I use filters) but not when you want a quiet system. UEFI makers should add an option for fan % at power on ...

Hmm, that was more than I planned to post.

Back on topic, I hope the Vega cards are nice and quiet, the AIO one in particular as that's the one I am after. Assuming I don't have to sell a kidney to get one. ;)
