@Gibbo - Vega Preorders?

Absolutely spot on. It's the simple things that can create all the noise:

  • Make sure all the fan curves are fine tuned as auto settings will no doubt be either too loud or not cooling efficiently.
  • Make sure PWM fans are set as PWM and aren't defaulting to DC in BIOS.
  • Some intake fans can make the case grill vibrate or hum, and these need to be changed to extract.
  • Install as many radiators as possible, more is moar!
  • Make sure you have the correct temperature trigger, usually having the CPU as a trigger is pointless for gaming.

Obviously, AIO cooling of the cards is more restrictive and to be honest I wouldn't even consider an AIO card over a custom air cooled card like a Gigabyte G1 Gaming etc..

My D5 was silent. I used to keep it at 2, which you couldn't hear and the rad fans at roughly 800, which were also very quiet. Water cooling is deffo the best option but for being a pain in the ass changing bits out, not so :D

Don't forget he said he's never had an AIO and shudders at the thought of water cooling anything - so his only experience is his central heating pump which powers a dozen or more 8-10sq.ft double radiators using 1" copper pipe.

The voice of experience obviously - so pay attention :D
Haha. Our fish tank pumps, my cats water fountain pump... all very loud (despite claims on the water fountain blurb that it was barely audible... I couldn't sleep with it on).

And in my defence I had a quick look at "AIO pump noise" on YouTube :p Lots of hits for "noisy Corsair Hxx pump", etc, etc. Luck of the draw? Bad QC? I'm clearly not an authority to say, but it seems getting a silent AIO is not guaranteed :)

e: Anyway, this whole tangent arose because someone said "perf/watt is not important". Obviously the more heat your card dissipates the more effort you have to put in to keep your rig quiet/silent. True? False?

Couldn't resist :p

AIO's are, in my opinion, a waste of time. If not a custom loop, then get a decent air cooled card. My MSI 6G 980ti was miles cooler and quieter than my INNO3D AIO. I actually put an EK block onto the AIO and went back custom loop!

Luck of the draw? Bad QC?

AIO pumps are very much luck of the draw - anyone saying otherwise really doesn't have experience of a large number of them to go off :s I've had everything from as close to silent as makes no odds through to whines/buzzing regardless of mounting, etc. and then some that just rattle, etc. which probably are RMA worthy.

(Granted a lot of my experience is builds using Corsair Hxx series as they are popular for some reason).

Best I've had for silence was the old swiftech kits actually.

Everything seems to be 2pm, so cards go on sale when the reviews come out, seems a real lack of faith in a product to do it this way, we could all know today how awesome Vega is and be waiting to buy, not that they all won't sell at £999 anyway to the miners :p

It Is more the big players would have got inside information with the little guys at a disadvantage but that is life

+1 my d5 is completely inaudible at the speed I run it 24/7 (1800rpm). Which is with 400rpm fans, no hdds etc so my system is extremely quiet anyway.

Never do mind swapping bits out and plain air cooling, feels too boring and mundane to me :D :p

Just have to hope they have started manufacturing AIO pumps better for VEGA.

My main comments on AIOs are not with the noise (I think that's hit and miss, IV had ones that are practically inaudible and then some that do make a fair humming noise) it's more about maintainability.

IV had a few air cooled reference graphics cards that I have replaced the fans on after the bearings start to degrade. This unfortunately cannot be done with a AIO loop, it's not a huge deal with CPU AIO coolers as they can be replaced due them to being generic.

But for a GPU like the fury X (sealed semi custom solution) when that AIO pump starts to die that's a much bigger issue to fix. Either needing a custom water block , aftermarket air cooler (if one is available) or a total card replacement.

In comparison, so far (touch wood) I have been able to find part for part replacements for any fan that's failed on me for a reasonable price, no matter how obscure.

I have a 4870 with the original blower fan, its not pretty or quiet but its run for over 8 years now. Blower style is very simple, i presume their basic reasoning is to stick with it

Looking forward to seeing if it's just the reference cards tomorrow. Hopefully not too long to wait for the others.

I thought there was stock of very similar designs to reference from the 3rd party companies but maybe they are just showing it not selling it

It's 2pm but you need to check the forum to get the code from Gibbo which will give you a large discount of the headline price (I'm expecting it to be around 800/900 then 400 to 600 after discount).

Seriously? Dammit, what if I'm not trusted enough with my few posts (I'm a dirty lurker), will there be a limit so that only peeps with 1000post get them?

We don't know - probably some announcement on the forum (to be kept secret and not blabbed all over the web where miners may see it) will be posted by Gibbo tomorrow saying how it will work and what time to set alarms for - possibly in the :) thread but maybe in a new one. Maybe tomorrow am maybe lunchtime about the 2pm go-live.

It was only one possible suggestion he was considering but he may decide to do it a different way.

Basically nobody but Gibbo knows anything other than 2pm tomorrow (ish) :D

As far as I know so long as your a member of the forum you will get it but orders are limited to 1 or 2 cards per customer. The idea behind it is to stop miners from snapping up all the cards in one go on the day of release and that RX Vega endes up with gamers.
