Girl Geeks, we need you!

What is it with women and having "all women/women only" events.
They trying to prove something to themselves?

Just go to a normal event like the rest of us.

My old colleague runs the Brighton one which I used to help with, they certainly don't feel they need to prove anything - they're just interested in meeting other female geeks which to be fair is a somewhat rare breed.

"I changed the way I dressed and I changed the way I behaved for many, many years," she said.

I wonder what she did to make herself look and sound like a geek? ;)

But surely by mimicking that you're just adding to the problem - surely they should be encouraging female+male events/clubs/groups - rather than female-only?

Feminism.

Would you advirtise to a mass of male geeks that there was a female only geek meeting if you were the female organiser? It would get ruined!

Imagine the hordes of OcUK followers turning up; mass ovary punching and pasty smashing all around.

(Although I see your point about "female only" organisations, the same could be said about male ones too).

Yeah I've been following these for a while, not been to one though.

Mildly annoyed at the BBC article only talking about "IT" as a geeky, technical occupation. What about the truckloads of engineers, scientists, accountants etc?

Hrm, maybe I should start a Bristol one... we have tons of that kind of industry around here..! Airbus, ST, Orange, Atkins, Arup...

It's amazing that isn't it. Someone interested in computing is considered a geek yet a mobile phone salesman who's job it is to know how a phone works is considered nothing more than normal...
